It's down now. Not sure if Zoom.uk would still be able to honour pre-orders if they are cancelling the UK release, have to wait and see what happens.
(Bit of a downer since How To Train Your Dragon 3 was great in 3D. I'll probably end up having to order from India or Germany unless Australia happens to release it).

It is 3D and some folks on The bluray.com forums got their shipping notice today of their 3D copy from BestBuy.com

Apparently they just put a 3D listing for Canadians on the Walmart.ca site yesterday. Might need to jump in on a purchase before they change their minds

Dang, saw its sold out at bestbuy. Price is a little too steep for me. Saw it the theaters in 3d. Enjoyable flick for those who haven't seen it.

Check my local Walmart (Southern Ontario) and not a spot to be seen Might need to try Best Buy, since they for sure got it at Best Buy stateside. People have posted pics of their copy in hand and said it’s an overall good presentation with the 3D ramping up as the film plays out. Sadly I just might need to import a copy

Why is the Blu ray 3D for this so expensive? It's been 35 plus forever now and currently at 38.34 on Amazon. It must be the best movie of 2019 or something.

Because retailers see no need to discount it? Or if it's third party sellers, well, they don't feel they need an immediate sale so no real need to conduct said sale.

Or it's rare enough that people will pay for it, so they do. Or it's imported and the seller doesn't want to lose money importing it.

I just had a look on Camel so hasn't really budged price wise much since it was released in the US, if anything the rarity is allowing resellers to push the price up on eBay. I did see the German edition is only generally available from 3rd party sellers now as well. I eventually had to buy the US edition off eBay at a bit of a markup to get it locally, fortunately the US edition is region-free so plays fine on Region B players.

So I was looking at eBay listings and they have this title as a MOD (manufacture on demand) title. I had no idea this was a thing. So I don't know if that means it's burned vs. stamped. In some cases it appears they are burned. Studios are doing this on lower demand titles.

This is what I read on a 3rd party eBay listing for Abominable:

What is Blu-ray MOD ?: Unlike our other titles, this title is manufactured by the studio “on demand,” which provides the same information formatting, quality and durability as regular Blu-rays. It will play on all playback-only Blu-ray players, but will NOT play on devices with write capability, such as personal computers. As always, we guarantee every item 100% against damage, defects and loss.

I don't see why a BD-ROM drive wouldn't play/read the disc. I would expect it to be using the same file structure, but I've never dealt with this format before, maybe it's different.

Has anyone ordered a MOD title? Particularly Abominable 3D? Anything different about it?

This line intentionally left blank.

I find it odd they say it would be compatible with all bd players - many enforce AACS on BDMV discs. This results in many burned discs not working on some players because you cannot burn the AACS key on the disc (invalid area). To get around this yo often had to use BDAV profile, but I'm not sure of that works with MVC.

Unless they have special discs and burners, that is. I also don't see why a bd drive can't read it - a bd writer wrote it.

The only MOD titles I have are DVDs.

The only thing I can think of is the quality will be limited since they'd be using single layer BDs rather than dual layer. Dual layer BDs cost a ton more money last I checked.

I can't say I've tried the MOD Blu-Rays yet, digging around it looks like Allied Vaughn (http://www.alliedvaughn.com/services...ure-on-demand/) is doing most of the legitimate US based MOD disc creation via burning on industrial level equipment (maybe using media similar to M-Disc, except at 50 GB?) I didn't see Dreamworks listed so hard to know if those MOD listings are actually legitimately licensed without contacting Dreamworks directly; in any case there's should be still enough actual pressed copies around at the moment that you wouldn't need to purchase a MOD disc in the first place. If it wasn't legitimate it'd probably be an unencrypted BDMV (to remove AACS encryption and requirements) on a burnt SL/DL Blu-Ray.

Sounds like it may need some requests from Allied Vaughn to get their catalog listed online (at least for 3D) to see what's legitimate or not as I suspect most of the out-of-date titles would move to MOD (or streaming) eventually so would need care to avoid getting unlicensed burnt copies.

Well, I ended up ordering off eBay. But looking at the amazon listing, under details it lists Universal MOD under studio information. It wouldn't surprise me if the single source for this title is a MOD title. I would say this is definitely the case at least on US release.

Now, a bit of reading it does seem like these discs may in fact be encoded differently so they may not rip with normal methods. I don't like that part. I will see what happens when it gets here. I have several tools to use. I don't really have a problem with burned vs pressed. If they're using bd-r, that's fine. As long as it will rip. I've read a lot online some really don't like that option. Doesn't bother me. The main issue I would have is being able to back it up. If you can't back it up, then that's unfortunate.

The other thing is they can't legally use the Blu ray or Blu-ray 3D logo on the discs if they are burned. I'll see what the packing looks like. There are licensing fees for official Blu ray discs. You can still sell your content on BD-R, you just can't put those logos on there if you don't have a license. I plan on selling a Blu ray 3D feature here if I can ever get it finished up, hopefully for a late summer release. It will be burned vs. pressed to save cost, but without the Blu ray or Blu-ray 3D logo. I will just use "3D Blu ray" on the cover to get around it. So it will be very much a MOD release.

I still don't get why this title costs so much. If anything, it should be cheaper since they are saving money with this method over a larger batch release.

Everything checked out ok on it. Discs were pressed and ripped fine. I couldn't tell there was any difference in manufacturing.

I'm guessing it's a pressed disc. Mod Blu-rays have compatibility issues due to mandatory AACS which may or may not be enforced by the player.

Wonder why they say it's mod - maybe in case they ran out and just sent you a copied disc?

From what I've been reading about MOD releases, they can be pressed or burned. Universal releases are all pressed, Sony's are burned. They typically have no to little special features, the artwork is basic and no extra packaging thrills.

Abominable does have some special features. It might be MOD because they release it in small batch runs same as their other Universal MOD releases.

Is it UPC 9132912852? (Ie equivalent to this with Digital Copy?) - if so it may be the entire release run has been via MOD (pressed discs) which may explain why there's been no discounts if the margins are significantly lower vs a standard Blu-Ray being a MOD disc.
