For what is worth, the contrast ratio advertised is twice...otherwise very similar...you can check the product brochure for both..in the second page is a detailed list of the features...I think you can get that on the epson store link for each product or in the support pages....I am not aware of a one to one comparison worksheet or something of the sorts....

For me...a refurb 5020 @$1,000 vs a new 5025 for $1700-$1,800 that I have seen listed at,..I will go with the refurb with original factory warranty....the issue is they are pretty scarce from what I have seen....I posted seen one in stock last Saturday but was gone by end of the day...was surprised it lasted that long.....

If you are interested, just have to keep looking frequently in epson store....for some reason the last two saturdays has seen one in stock...At least they have this link up in their website....guess it means some might be coming?

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/j...u=V11H527020-N

good luck....

Thanks mariokrt64

I actually spent some time on Epson web site and keep finding more differences.
1. contrast (already noted by you)
2. 2200 lumens in 5020 vs 2400 lumens in 5025
3. 5020 missing super resolution
4. THX color model not listed for 5020 but listed under cinema filter so not sure

I've been keeping an eye already for the last 2 weeks and noticed last Saturday it came into stock for almost the whole day but I was still researching so did not jump in.

Visual plex was selling new 5025 for $1599 with free mount and lamp until 3 days back. I believe its $1,999 now. Yes, the difference is huge but any insight on the above differences is worth paying that difference?

A pair of glasses means two eyes/one frame. That is standard terminology when referring to sunglasses, eyeglasses, etc. Same as a pair of pants means two legs, one waist.

If it ain't in HD, it ain't worth watching!

5020 - is rated 2400 Lumen on Epson site and it does have Super Resolution too so as THX mode. I will be receiving mine today, will post confirmation about same.

And thanks for not jumping on it, I bought it in the evening on Saturday, after that it went out of stock

My bad on the lumens. 5020 does have 2400 lumens while 5025 has 2200. Doesn't make any sense. Is it possible 5020 was released after 5025?

Could you point me where you see super resolution on Epson web site.

You are welcome but I'm pretty sure they must have more than one in stock as it was in stock pretty much whole day and multiple AVS members seems to have grabbed one

Here is Art's review of 5020 : http://www.projectorreviews.com/epso...jector-review/ - where he mentions in highlights and also you can see it in Remote button !

Epson 5025 is latest and seems to be step down version of 5030, it has almost double the contrast of 5020 which was first come out in year 2012, and one can guess Dynamic Iris and other technical features will be taking advantage of advancements of technology in 3 yrs.

In my albeit limited experience with projectors using active irises for extending the dynamic contrast range of the projector into the "hundreds of thousands to one" ratios, it seems to my eye that what amounts to nearly imperceptible differences visually translate into almost absurdly high numerical differences. And while those numbers may look amazing from a marketing point on paper, in reality they ultimately mean very little to the final image quality produced.

Don't believe in advertised contrast ratios.....I have a JVC HD250PRO, their entry level a few yrs back and just got the epson 5020...clearly the JVC has a better contrast even though its advertised figure is 25,000:1 vs. the Epson's 320,000:1...it's goes without saying that the Epson is a very good PJ...impresive 3D..I have to admit its my first 3D projector...but to me it looks very good....

Man these are tempting. Wonder if it's a worthwhile upgrade over a Benq w6000.

I received the projector yesterday. It doesn't come in new packaging but all the accessories are new and it is in perfect shape.

My theater is still under construction so I set it up in the living room last night projecting on a tan wall. I am extremely impressed! I had a BenQ 1070 before and although I was fine with it, this 5020ub blows it away. My wife rolls her eyes at all my AV adventures but even she said WOW when she saw the picture. Great picture in THX, super quiet. Very good black levels even in the living room with tan walls and white ceiling. The iris sounds like a very quiet mechanical hard drive. I was sitting right next to it and only noticed it when there was no sounds happening on screen. I cannot wait to get my theater done and enjoy this set up properly.

I was about to pay $600 more for a Sony 40es off eBay but I'm glad I didn't so far. I just hope it lasts a long time....

You guys are right. This is a absolute STEAL for $1000.

IMHO I think it would be an appreciable upgrade in just about every aspect.
Grab one and if you don't like it return it.

It's a great deal...however I don't think you can return it....according to Epson's policy on refurb's...think I read it someplace on the Epson webstore...of course, it carries the original two yr. warranty....

For what it's worth, Epson had more of the 5020UB refurbs available on Saturday. I was able to order one around 4pm CST, when I went back to see if there were anymore after checking out, it said out of stock. It took a few days until Epson sent the confirmation e-mail, so I wasn't entirely sure if I had actually managed to snag one, but I got my shipping notification this morning. I guess just check back periodically...

Just by chance I stumbled on that page and saw it too...

BTW, I am having problems with overheating on my refurb unit...My PJ runs very hot since I got it. It stopped in the middle of a movie and got the red blinking temp light on the unit...

there are two phones listed in the manual:

Epson Private Line Support Service

Projector Support Service

Whom should I call to get better service? Experience with either of the two?

Called the Projector Support Service line and they are sending a refurb replacement FedEx to arrive in 2-5 days....Will see if this is a better unit....

Have heard so many stories with the Epson's reliabilty...but anyway purchased this since it had the original 2 yrs warranty....still tried to get a square trade extended warranty but was not available for this...Epson's extended warranty was just too expensive
