lol...sure. Luckily theories are like as....I mean noses...every one has one...
Ha ha. My guess now is it was someone messing up the price when updating the stock.

..yes 38 left @1497 on Epson.ca. They have cancelled 2 orders of mine already due to their terrible verification process. I put a 3rd order in and am waiting to see if it cancels

...I agree that it is weird that all of a sudden over 100 units showed up between us and can sites.... I have been checking for months on a daily basis and a few here and there would show up but struck out.... would be interested in finding out why? If they cancel my 3rd order though.... I am out and will never buy Epson again...terrible customer service....

Just curious why everyone is choosing the 5040ub over the BenQ ht3550? I know ht3550 is $350 more so maybe that is one of the factor?

Also, when the wide color gamut filter is used, is there a bluish green tint. This happens with the ht3550. It does seem to make the reds look more red and blues look more blue but for some reason it gives a bluish greenish tint so I am not sure why it is accurate reference colors.

From Canada and we also have the discount on the refurb. Just wondering if any Canadian had to go through the exchange multiple times or at least once until they got a good 5040UB?
Does Epson do a swap and pay shipping or send you to a local Epson authorized repair shop to repair it?

Thanks for ANY info on Canadians experience.

Please keep me posted on this, I've been in the same situation. They cancelled two of my orders on different cards due to their verification process (one visa, one mastercard). I now have $2400 tied up between the two orders, and i'm sure it won't be credited back until next week. Very frustrating, and Epson wasn't really helpful at all to my situation.

I'm curious to hear what happens with your third order, I'm crossing my fingers for you.

We've bought a few projectors direct from Epson.ca...I had no problems but my brother needed to swap out his refurbished 8350s a few times....Epson just sent out the replacements, if available, at no charge hassle free....sadly all three had defects so he just asked for a refund ..no problem.
I'm still on the fence about the 5040...trying not to scratch the itch. lol

Motorized lens shift and focus, lens offers better placement flexibility (the Benq HT3550 will not work in my setup), quieter....but mostly the the superior contrast and black levels which are paramount for serious movie viewers in a dedicated home theater.....HDR is better handled by the BenQ though if I understand correctly.

.....perceived value....the 5040 was initially over $5,000 Canadian.

...almost talked myself into pushing the ship button.

Just bought one for $1151 weds afternoon (US). Delivery expected Monday. Hoping it arrives in acceptable condition and is as trouble free as my HC2150 has been (2700 hrs in 18 months, original bulb, zero problems). I used my Costco credit card to add 2 years to the warranty so I'm not too nervous. Any updates on the power supply issue? Once it's out of warranty, what would it cost to repair that problem (either through Epson or perhaps a local repair shop)? Any talk of a recall or possibly offering an extended warranty service window for such a seemingly pervasive defect? I've seen it happen with other electronic companies' products with situations like this one.

Why are they so many in stock now?

Are they shipping out all the returned units from the prev purchases?

Epson also has the 6030UB for $1470

Is it worth the extra $320?

Came today, I snuck out of work, fired it up, looked at the test pattern and a Blu-ray at 1080p no blobs.

What a beast I am dying to take a can of back spray paint to it. Will reinforce my rear shelf tonight and make it official.

Good question...all those 5040s with faulty power supplies, possibly a couple of hundred or more may have been returned to the factory and the containers may have just recently landed......who knows?

Nice! Hopefully I have the same luck.

You sure you don't want to wait before you spray paint it though? Will that void the warranty or no?

How do we identify a faulty power supply? They just don't power up? or is it something else that makes them faulty?

Another good question.....still no answer...unfortunately they cannot be identified by date or serial number...most likely down to a bad batch of one or more of the components which get distributed randomly on the assembly line.

Maybe check out this thread.

6030UB is actually a older/lesser model than 5040UB

And the six series line ONLY indicates a black chassis, bundled extra bulb, and bundled Chief projector mount over the five series model.

Internally, and operationally, there is no difference. So effectively that’s a 5030UB in black color for $320 more — since refurb officially includes neither bulb nor mount. Bad deal in comparison.

I was just teasing, but I might just try it one day. I was wondering of some dark panty hose might darken it up a but and still let it breath. It is not COVERT like my previous black panasonic.

I think we are past the power supply issue, they big reason they have so many is because they have fixed them for better. The real issue for me is how long was the PJ used until the PS failed. Is there dust and image problems, blobs etc.

Thanks for your reply. That makes the decision a little easier but still worried about all the issues. It would be so nice to have such a great projector!. I have an Epson 8700UB. So I am ready for a new one. I am pretty sure whatever I get will be better than my current one. And the only reason I am moving on is that the Epson 8700UB finally has those dreaded slightly coloured bars on the top and bottom of the picture. They can only be seen 20% of the time but I see them!

Just not sure if I want to take a chance . . .at least now I know Epson will (for Canadians too) if defective . . .
1. Exchange it,
2. Pay for shipping,
3. Refund if there are none available.

That makes it easier . . .

Calibrated to the best of my ability using you grids and brightness and contrast you tube vids. looked at some you tube settings people are using but ignored a lot of them. No expert but I think it's almost dialed in and my 30 foot hdmi 4k cable seems up to the task. The blacks are almost too black sometimes had to get some shadow detail in, it will take some more playing around. The good news is no apparent issues after a couple hours so far.

My 10 year old panasonic was at the time the best projector on the market around 2K and I have to say it still holds up. I see better detail with this and am going super wide 2.35.1 as of next wed ditching by 16X9 but will have the exact same 16X9 size for that content with lens memory. So the brightness will help with the new size and the detail is def noticeable.

This PJ refurb is well worth this price but I don't think as an upgrade it would be worth over 2k for me so I am happy taking a risk with this. If it craps out or gets weird the Panasonic AE4000U is on standby. If you get this refurb model and it works out I think it is by far the best possible value in the 4K projector universe in the last couple years and moving forward.

This might help some of you with settings. I did not set the gamma but did most of the others and am pretty close to most of these.

The 5040 is below the 6040 almost dead center of the page, a nice media slide show of the menu. I am sure there is better in the official thread but they are insanely long.

Received mine today. First opened the service menu, check lamp hour and total operation time, both showed 0 hour.
Connected to denon 4300 receiver with a Nvidia shield as an input device, saw the screen from the shield briefly
but the lense cover is closed and the lamp (orange) and the power (blue) lights are blinking and fan is running. Changed to hdmi2 but same problem.
Anyone know what's the problem? It works okay when there is no connection, I can open the menu, change settings.
But as soon as input is on, the issue is happening.

Yeah, and the 5030UB refurb is also on sale for $950 or so.

Maybe I would feel different if I had the same issues some of you guys had but I doubt it. I paid less for this with a free bulb than I did for my viewsonic PX747-4K which I got a great deal on. These projectors are in different leagues.

Anyone that doesn't enjoy tinkering with setups and possibly messing around or anyone with limited free time should certainly use caution.

How are you getting these for $900ish with a free bulb? The price on their website is $1,151 and says nothing about a free bulb?
