I had a company call me today soliciting feedback about my specific experience with my customer support for the 4th refurb replacement unit (fifth Epson refurb projector) and my satisfaction level with that product/process. I told her that I was satisfied with this last unit, because I finally got a reasonably good unit, but that this was the first time they had called me to get feedback and that the whole process otherwise had been very unsatisfactory. She said this survey response was only to be about my last interaction with their tech and my current refurb product received earlier this month. I said I hesitated to even rate this experience as a sole interaction, because it certainly wasn't, and my overall experience was poor even if this last unit replacement experience was acceptable. I didn't want a 5 star survey feedback being added to the pool when my overall experience was so poor. I said Epson should know there's a obvious problem here and it isn't fixed yet based on the other comments in the AVSForum thread of other buyers.

She convinced me that I'd be able to give an overall score if I would first rate my most recent score, so I went ahead and gave her the information she solicited. One of the last questions she asked me was what was my overall experience score dealing with Espon. I said it was poor, and she asked if I'd like corporate Epson to give me a call. I said sure! I'd actually like that. I don't need anything from them, except to relay my honest experience, and hopefully their management team can use this feedback constructively, and make improvements in their processes. She asked what the most important trait of a good company and buying experience was, and I said typically it might be said to be good friendly customer service - but in this case friendly customer service and prompt returns and cross shipping RMAs etc were worthless without a quality replacement product. I said at this point I'll value a quality, working product as the most important attribute of a positive transaction.

That's not that big of a deal, because a bit of an overzoom will hide it, but if it bothers you or if you can see it on small font text you can likely fix it through the panel alignment controls in the Projector's menu system.
Ok, I'll tinker with it. This is my first projector ever so I may be overreacting. Thanks man!

Maybe the bad (honest) press in this thread made Epson refurb center reconsider their practices to bring up their reputation. That’️s a good thing!
Not sure if this is new or another refurb...but came fully packed in foam. I’m away so my wife opened the box on my request. From time I called, got the RMA and replacement to my door was 25 hrs!!!

Will do a thorough inspection and report back on Sunday.

Mine was packaged the same with that heavy duty foam.

I finally got a chance to run some generic patterns from YouTube using a roku stick. No dust blobs, no pink hues, everything looks good to me so far. I don’t have my space ready, so I was shooting on a beige, textured wall with white ceilings. Decided to fire up a Disney movie I had handy and my jaw dropped to the floor. If it looks this good in these conditions, I can’t wait to get everything properly setup and dialed in.

I’m over 5000ft, so I did turn on the high altitude mode, which made the fans a bit nosier. Minor complaint.

I got my order for a refurb in yesterday, it is still "processing" now. Hopefully nothing gets screwed up. Anyway, I'm looking for mounts and came across the RPA-357. I also saw some that were RPMA-357 (where the A could be replaced with B/C/D). They are labeled as RPA Elite Custom Projector Mount with Keyed Locking (then are the A version, B version, etc). Is that a better choice than the straight up RPA-357? If so, how do I know which version to choose?

I can get the RPA-357 free from a work thing. Would I just need that and then a joist mount, and then the pipe to drop it down? Here is what it says is in the box:

Four M5 x 10mm pan-head screws
Nine M4 x 10mm philips-head screws
Nine M4 x 10mm hex-head screws

I think that versioning is just the keying for the lock.

Yup.. Finally went and picked mine up from Purolator last night.. packed in heavy black foam.. Hooked up firestick to it and did some quick testing with Youtube white..dark screens.. no blobs.. moved the lens around and checked again.. all good so far. It is massive... no visible marks on screen or lens. I was surprised how far it had to be back... I basically have to put right up against my wall which is 16 ft from screen(so about 14 from front of projector) and had zoom almost at max to get 140" screen... Epson calculator says 13.7 ft but I assumed that was at mid zoom.. oh well. not a big deal.. no plans on getting a larger screen anytime soon... will be mounting it on a shelf this weekend and do some more testing and tweaking with settings...did look at some youtube 4K vide's and they were as good or better than the HT3550 I returned... and I paid 500 less.. so I am happy .. so far...

Another friendly reminder to those that may not have read the whole thread-Epson has a mail in offer for a free bulb for 5040 purchases in June. Apparently the offer is for the US and Canada. Here's the Canada link: https://mediaserver.goepson.com/ImCo...MIR%20(EN).pdf

Sorry, don't have the US one.

I can get the RPA-357 free from a work thing. Would I just need that and then a joist mount, and then the pipe to drop it down? Here is what it says is in the box:
The straight-up RPA-357 is the basic Mount w/CustomPlate. It's adjustments are made via a 4-sided assembly that has 3 Phillip Head Set Screws on each side. The adjustments available involve Forward / Backward Tilt, and Sideways Pitch. Yaw is done by simply twisting the Mount/Pole.

All the other "Elites" have a Geared Adjustment for the 1st two mentioned, and those Gears are actuated by long Handled Knobs that also have a Phillips Head cavity on their ends. They also are of a higher Profile....and always cost appreciably more.

A Free RPA -357 is hard to pass up IMO. Once it's set up and adjusted(screws tightened)...you can hang a Cowboy from it and it's not gonna come out of adjustment. But yeah...some do really appreciate just twisting a couple Knobs.

Whatever you decide on...you will need a Ceiling Plate and drop Tube (1.5" NPT x "whatever works in length")

"They said it couldn't be done. Well, we sure showed 'em otherwise!"

Just ordered a 5040 refurb and found a coupon code for free 2 day shipping and printed out the rebate for a free bulb. I hope i get a good one.
My current projector is an 3500 which is 3.5 years old and was also a refurb and has worked great for three years and we use as our tv which gets over 8 hours of use a day.

I am only using a 100" screen so i expect this should put my 3500 to shame.

Fingers crossed for a good one.

Set mine up on shelf at back of room last night. Lens is approx 14ft for screen and was able to get my 140 inch screen. Super easy to set up with power lens shift and zoom. Looks great on shelf and only cost 20$ to build it. Now onto making some custom settings.

Winner! I actually had my bid in on this before you posted, but either way I am very happy with the outcome. I guess everyone was out camping or something. LOL

I will be creating a removable hushbox, using plywood, OC703 acoustic foam and Guilford of Maine fabric, and of course the CHF4500 mount installed within the hushbox. Open front for ventilation. Don't ask me what the pros and cons of doing this are, I have never seen one made before, it's just my idea. Why not, I have the tools, skills, material, and supplies all on hand.

I’m assuming they have learned to just reset both of these during service. I still need to run test patterns, but the menu looks great...

I knew this thing was big, but in person I was shocked how big it really was. My last projector was an Epson 8350, and this thing is like triple the size.

I’m surprised nobody makes their own ceiling mounts. Those chief mounts are pricey unless you get an eBay deal. In the past I used 1/2” pipe with floor flanges connected to a board with screws and wingnuts into the PJ. It’s a little less convenient to setup, but you do it once and it only costs like $20-30 in parts. As heavy as it feels, this PJ is only 24lbs.
Ordered Monday, received Thursday at FedEx held at Walgreen. Did not see any scratches, and lens was clear even though the automatic lens shield was half opened, and one of the leveler feet was fully extended. Image is clear and no blobs whatsoever. The menu indicated 0 lamp hour but how do you check for projector hour? How do I access the service menu? Thanks.

Hold the menu button for 8 seconds then press the ESC button twice.

Thanks. Mine had about 1 hr. of projector hours... But the lamp has been replaced 2 times... Not sure if the first original lamp was counted as 1 time?

Mine had 9 total hours with 8 of them being mine and lamp replacements as 1. Not sure if this means it was returned without original owner even turning it on...or that it is a new unit? Either way I guess it is good news.....

Received my refurb 5040UB last week.

I am really impressed with the image quality, it is a major and instantly noticeable improvement compared to my Sony VLP-HW40ES.

Watched a few UHD movies and my wife commented, unprompted, about how much sharper the picture looked (110" screen with about a 10-11 foot viewing distance). I'm really happy to have a dynamic iris again, and the motorized zoom/lens shift made installation so much easier than I was used to with previous projectors.

Unfortunately I do have a greenish blob on the screen that shows up in black or near-black scenes, particularly credits and scene transitions in movies. Going to contact Epson support about a replacement.

Thanks for the input! I'm thinking I'll go with the free option. May take a few more minutes of setup, but I'll trade that for some cash.

Also, for anyone that can help, I just got my unit today. Looks like no blobs of dust, no scratches, and good color uniformity. Only question is about black/white test patterns. I ran one from YouTube. From regular viewing distance it looked fine. Up close I saw a slight reddish bit of pixels to the right, and a slight greenish bit to the left (of the black parts). I'll try to attach a photo. Is that normal? If not, can I fix it with some setting adjustment?

Lastly, are there any recommended settings tweaks I should make? Don't need to go nuts with it, but am willing to do some simple adjustments to improve the experience.

Another quick question, based on my measurements it looks like I'll need about 16-18" of 1.5" NPT pipe to make this work right. The exact length depends on the mount itself but 16" will probably get it done. This is going to sound stupid, but where do I buy that?

At this point with so many refurbs coming through you’ve got to wonder if they are sending out new ones as refurbs. It was onesie twosey releases — now 40 or 50 in a batch?
