I just received my refurbished 5040ube and within 10 minutes it stopped working. Now I only get a blue blinking power light and what sounds like faint hissing. Guess I gotta send it back for another one and try again. The picture did look amazing for the few minutes I had!

I've attempted to order the refurbished 5040ube three times now and each time it's been cancelled for some reason. Tried two different credit cards. Anybody know what's going on?

The Panasonic 4K Bluray players with the HDR sliders are on sale at Amazon and BestBuy right now.

These players are supposed to eliminate the limitation of the HDR brightness issue for projectors.

DP-UB820, and DP-UB420.
The only difference is (as best I can tell) is that the analog outs, and Dolby Vision functions are missing on DP-UB420, as well as the DP-UB420 lacks a LCD unit on the player...But you pay half the price, and the video and audio quality/guts and capability are otherwise identical.

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/122-g...rojectors.html

This is a good option to work around the Full HDR limitations on the 5040UB and previous projectors (JVC too).

I ordered a DP-UB420 at BestBuy and will pick it up tonight.

Received my unit last Wed. I have put 25 hours on so far. It is light years ahead of the last 5040ub I had a year and a half ago. It had a misaligned pixel as well as the power supply self terminated at 179 hours. It currently is running firmware 1.14 which came out the day before I ordered. they really cleaned up the picture and hdr options.

Also looking forward to picking up the Panasonic 420 as Jonathan mentions to see how it compares to the Oppo203 which looks great. I do miss having Darbeevision on my 5030ub as I believe the SD firmware is the same with a better lens. I might just use the Darbee and the 203 in 1080 mode on HDMI 2 unless the Panasonic is that much better upconverting .

So this is a lot better then the LG - UP875 4K Ultra HD 3D Blu-ray Player I bought last year? I will have to wait till I get a 4K projector set up in my theater, before getting another 4K DVD player. I use my LG on my Sony 75" 4K TV right now.

I do not know. On the Epson site it does not give the issues addressed with the 1.14 update. I do know that it is much better than the initial firmware 1.11 on my original. The image is sharper and brighter.

#2 ...REDUCES ERRORS IN THE ROM OF THE MAIN BOARD (I have no idea what this means)

Hope that helps. I'm going to install mine tonight.

I have an Xbox one X and a HDFury Linker that is a total pain in the ass. I would rather have a projector that supports 18gbps so that everything will just work. I still don't think I have the Linker setup right, and there are too many variables to keep up with. I have green check marks on all 4k options on the xbox, however, HDR is still way too dark. Also, no matter what I do, I always have only 8bit on the projector. It's all a total pain.

This is unfortunate news! I just ordered one of these 5040 refurbs and did not know about the 10Gbps limit on HDMI. I also just bought a used Sony UBP-X800 as a UHD source. Now doing some reading... am I also gonna need one of these HDFury Linker's to convert chroma? Sorry I'm a newb and have not reviewed this entire thread before the purchase.

The Linker is not required if you only plan to watch UHD/HDR movies (currently a single 60Hz title with one more announced), it's used for 4K 60Hz HDR to convert 10/12 bit to 8 bit so that it fits within the bandwidth limit.

The Linker is more for people that want to game at 4K 60Hz with HDR (at the cost of adding banding here and there).

Hi All, I posted this a few months ago and somebody must be able to shoot me in the right direction.

I just bought an EPSON PowerLite Home Cinema 5040UB refrurb with version software:

Main 840076648uwwv113
Video2 7YL28RMV111

Is this the newest software or do I have to update?

Thanks in advance.

114 is the newest firmware - links are in the official 5040UB thread. You have one version too old at 113. However, nobody knows that 114 does.

I purchased the refurbished epson 5040ub right before christmas and got mine right after. Then unit looked brand new, had zero hours on the bulb and unit according to the service menu, but had firmware 11. This unit lasted all of an hour before it stopped powering on (wished i snapped a service menu photo before it lost power)

I then called them up, they overnighted me another unit and this unit also had zero hours on the bulb and unit. I get the feeling that they no longer have refurbished units, but instead they are sending out new units to us instead of individually testing every new unit in house for a power problem before sending them out (because of labor costs). The second projector worked great so far and the firmware is version 14.

The one concern that I had with this projector after reading this thread was releated to HDR, but after testing it out I'm very happy with the projectors HDR function. Yes, the HDR is a little dim compared to standard color, but the color pop is amazing and worth it. I simply changed the projectors color settings to bright cinema, changed the HDR setting to auto (bright), and changed the lamp setting to medium or high power and after that HDR looked really good for HDR on a projector.

My main concern was realted to the 10gbps limit, but this truly isnt even a problem if all your watching is movies in HDR. I use an apple tv 4k and when go into the settings menu you must turn on match frame rate and match source dynamic range. This will allow the apple tv to automatically change the settings for you when the movie starts. This feature works out great because it allows the HDR to work within the 10gbps limit since the frame rate of movies is 23.97. The only problem I can see with HDR is related to 4k gaming becuase of the 10gbps limit trying to run this at 60fps.

So for anyone else out there who was on the fence that was worried about HDR hopefully this post will help you decide what you want to do. If 12bit hdr gaming is your thing get the 5050ub projector because of the 18gbps limit. Also for anyone looking for a 5040ub refurbished projector keep an eye out on the epson page, there was 2 in stock 10mins ago, but sold out already. These sell fast, but they do seem to pop with one or two a day. I normally see them around 10am eastern time which is 7am PST. I'm guessing this is because its related to epson opening at 7am? not sure. Also dont miss your epson verification phone call otherwise your order gets canceled.

@mat82284 4K HDR 60Hz can be achieved by dropping the bit depth from 10 bit to 8. Besides a PC, a HD Fury Linker is capable of doing this.

I also noticed that the free lamp rebate offer submission on the website is still there. I was able to find lamp rebate offers for every month from January to August 31st of this year and I couldn’t find any after that date. The requirements require you to submit the rebate within 30 days of purchase, so if the last rebate offer ended august 31st, the rebate form should have been removed by September 31st and since it wasnt removed from their website I decided to just fill it out and see what happens.

I literally have nothing to lose by filling it out since I’m not expecting anything, but the best case scenario would be coming home one day to random Epson package with a free lamp inside! LOL I’ve included photos of what the rebate form is asking me to send in. Maybe the rebate is still active, but just not publicly stated that it is. I really can’t see Epson making a mistake like this by leaving the form up on their website long after its been expired.

The only thing that I dont want to send in is my original UPC label (don’t want to cut it), but i do plan copy it and send it in. Again i dont really expect this to work, but I figure why not, it wont hurt anything for trying.

Rebate form is here

@mat82284 What's the black level like IRL in your pics since they differ. I assume it's the camera, but is it really as black as #2 (with Elsa in the background) or is it closer to pic 4 and 5 with the snow?

I took the photos at the same time from my iphone 11 last night. I have the 5040ub projecting on a my 125" elite screen that has a 1.3 gain (which is located in my living room, with all white walls and ceilings). I'll double check tonight when it gets dark and take some new photos to see which one it matches more. It possible the iphone 11 has an effect on the photos, but the photos are HDR so it should capture HDR images from the projector.

Ok I did more testing and it looks to be as dark as you see picture 2 and durring brighter scenes its like scenes 4 and 5.

Here are some other photos of different movies in HDR showing what im taking about. Some scenes are very dark, while others you can see the black bars. The bars tend to become more visible when the ceiling is also getting hit with light.

Some of the photos might be a slight bit blurry, but thats not from the lens or the camera thats because I took the photos while the movie was playing.
