So whos projector did I get? My refurb 5040ub came in, looked clean but the mounting holes all have circle black marks round them, like a mount was used, so obviously came from someone else. Appears to be a chief mount plate, since all the mounting holes have it. Anyways fired it up, got a nice green dust blob bottom right of the picture.

They come and go, sometimes you see them every day, others you wait weeks. Lately it seems they are back up after just a few days of being gone.

I understand that, but what I'm asking, when they will run out of them and we start getting the 5050s?

Indeed -- 8 came in stock yesterday around 1pm EST and I jumped on the deal. I went back a few hours later to check my order status and saw the price went up and they were OOS again.

Aside, I have *not* yet received a phone call from Epson so I am anxiously waiting for my order from "processing". I am updating from a 10+ year old Epson 6500UB, and really can't wait to see the difference!

Glad you got it at the previous price point. I ordered mine Friday, and it gets here tomorrow. I never got a call, so I called them to check the status of my order and see if it shipped and they said it had already shipped and to expect a tracking number within the next day or so. Sure enough I got the "Shipped and Billed" email the next day. So, it wouldn't hurt to give them a call. I'm guessing they didn't call me because I already had an account with them before this purchase.

I'm upgrading from a Panasonic AE4000, so I expect to see a huge improvement.

Replacement projector arrived today, took it out of the box, lcd cover was ajar and there sounds like something rattling around inside, like a loose screw or broken part. Awesome...... this really is a game of roulette...

Not surprised they raised the price considering how fast they sell out when added to stock. I reckon they figured they’ve been leaving some money on the table. With that said, $150 is a pretty heavy increase IMO. I think maybe $50 to $100 would seem more reasonable. But we shall see. They are still priced lower than other refurb 5040s on the market.

This last batch to be received seems like have heavy signs of use. I'm in that same ordering batch and mine gets in tomorrow. I'll post the condition.

Will they take it back, you think? Or will you even try?

Oh they are taking it back. I have two 5040ub sitting here waiting on a phone call on when they will pick them up and ship a third. Kinda ridiculous. They clearly do not check these things. The most they seem to do is fire em up and see if they turn on.

Same ole’ same ole’

They’ve been doing this same nonsense with refurbs for almost a decade. It took me four failed 5040UBs to get a good one on the fifth, and I think four or five or six (I can’t remember ATM and would have to look up the old thread) Epson 8350s to get a good one about 8 years ago.

Super dumb.

HDR does look bad on it.

You can buy a $200 panasonic DP-UB420 disk player to strip (or retone map) HDR to BT2020/SDR to overcome this problem.
Then a $30 roku 4k streaming stick with display output to 60hz SDR to bypass the problem for most other streaming.

I was not satisfied by any implantation of HDR on the 5040UB - until I just removed it from the equation.

Its hard to argue the value after those source objects are deployed.

Also the Sony 45ES trails the Epson 5040UB according to a Projector Cental x vs. y article in most everything including black levels, and sharpness at 1080p, and upscaling.

Mine came Monday attempted delivery Friday but had a mix up..

Fired this thing up this morning on my concrete slab wall to check it's ok..

0H on the bulb, looks pristine.

Most refurbs I've gotten in the past are similar to this, they have some sort of infant mortality issue or a known failure that just requires a simple up-rev of a board, component, etc. Typically this means refurbs are arguably -better- than brand new. Of course that all depends on the manufacture date. But I'll take a refurb over one that's been sitting on the shelf awaiting sale for a year or 18 months..

How is the 5050 better for HDR? I didn't think the technology had changed that much from the 5040?

Just adding to the experiences.

Placed order Monday
Shipped on Tuesday (I never got a confirmation call but have ordered from Epson in past - maybe that matters)
Arrived on Thursday

Initial evaluation is positive. Came well packed in foam, shows 0H use and 0H lamp, case looked pristine, no scratches on lens. Focus uniformity looks good. Didn't see any dust blobs yet (want to check again at night - don't have great light control in the room). A bit of a pink tint on the right side but not worth risking other issues so won't send it back for that.

So far, so good.

Follow up on my purchase of the 6030:
Ordered Sat around 2. Got phone call early Monday morning
Received it Tuesday mid day.
New condition, Zero hours on it.
Have about 16 hours on it already (was home sick most of the week).
Looks good - cant say its noticeably better image than the old 8350.
One standout item - these were sold with a mount and spare bulb as part of the "deal" when they were in production. Mine did not include either of those, but it does have the 3 year warranty.
Oh, and it is quieter than the 8350 was by far. Less fan, and far less of the clicking noise (in fact, I havent noticed any from it)

Received my 5040ub today. It could pass as brand new if it wasn't for a small, very light scratch on the lens. I barely saw it. The image looks great. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble getting the 4k options to kick in on my Amazon Fire, so haven't gotten a chance to see the 4k enhancement just yet.

4K content from a UHD disk and 1080P upscaled content from a bluray disk are almost indistinguishable on this 5040UB as far as sharpenss and clarity. The upscaler is quite good, or the 4K is not. One of the two. (I'd like to think the upscaler 4K enhancement/e-shift is good).

I've compared 1080P disks to 4K disks many times and aside from the HDR difference - I'd wager most, myself included, couldn't tell the difference in a blind test without an A/B comparison.

Yes keep it.

Anyways, Epson told me wed they'd monitor the stock for me and call me when one came in to send to me. Shocker, I had to check the site and call them. I also need to call back mon just to get the tracking number. Just awful service. Wish I had someone higher ups email. Nothing about thos process has been customer friendly, cept pickup.

If I remember right I was getting 4k but even with frame rate matching on (or whatever the firestick calls it) it would always send 60hz. I couldn't get it to output at 24hz for nothing. Read somewhere else it was an android app thing. Switched to the Apple TV and it works fine. May try an Nvidia Shield so I can put the Apple TV back on the wife's tv as she much prefers it to the firestick. Or I'll just buy another Apple TV.

This post struck me! I currently have a Blu-ray 1080p player and was planning on replacing it with a UHD 4K player since I have a couple RedBox kiosks in my area. The idea was that with 4K UHD blu-ray movies from RedBox, I'd get a superior image from the 5040UB even though it is a pixel shifter and not true 4K.

Considering Archaea's comment about upscaling 1080p with this projector being almost indistinguishable from a 4K source, I'm wondering if it's even worth the effort? Can anyone chime in to either corroborate or dispute this? Are there any other benefits to using a 4K source? Many thanks!

Got my refurb 5040UB

It was in perfect like-new condition and after installing it, the picture was mind blowingly good (120" screen). I used some of the Samsung 4k demos on youtube to show off the projector to my family and they were stunned. Time will tell if the power supply will hold up but I have my fingers crossed. Glad I hung in there and kept checking back for it being in stock.
