Refurbished Epson 5040UB - $1,151.00

Pretty insane deal for a 5040UB. Since it's refurbished, I'm not certain of the warranty that's included on these, but I would think it would have at least some period of Warranty. Someone else mentioned that it may have the full regular warranty, but buyer beware, because I'm not sure.

https://epson.com/Clearance-Center/H...a300c40a240610

Edit: Apparently out of stock now. Might come back, who knows?

jbnpaul 03-28-2019 07:09 AM

This is a great deal provided erosion is offering full warranty.

Its arguably the best projector under 2500. And at this price this is a great buy.

From what I could find on their site, "certified Epson refurbished" have the same as new warranty. It's mentioned in description blurbs on Google, but I couldn't confirm it when clicking through.

Me too!

This was an incredible price!

Archaea 03-28-2019 08:39 AM

I called and asked if they had any, even though the website said out of stock, she said no and said they had other projectors refurb for sale. She said they don't have a notification engine to let us know when it's back in stock - just check every day is the way to do it.

Hmm.

that was a great price. at that price you could probably use it for a couple years and still sell it for $800-$1k on eBay used when you were ready to upgrade to true 4K.

dbpaddler 03-28-2019 08:43 AM

Shame it can't match the shorter throw of the benq pj's. I would've jumped instead of getting the 2050a to tide me over for a year or two.

I favorited this link a few months back and check almost every day. It's never been in stock that I've seen, unfortunately. I'm hoping the current offering of $2k + free bulb means this deal for refurbs will eventually go active in the next couple months. And maybe the impending 5050ub launch next month will help, too.

Well you missed it this morning then. It was posted on Slickdeals so I imagine the vultures there jumped on it quick.

I'd been watching it for a couple of months. Figured it was an error and that it'd never really show up at that price. But today, after reading this post, I started watching it pretty close. It showed in stock early this afternoon and I tried to get one. By the time I got through entering all my checkout info, it told me my cart was empty and I'd missed it. I kept checking and kept checking, and right before 5pm CST, it came back up available and I got one. So keep checking it if you want one. I've been watching the HT5050 thread closely, because thats what I wanted. But for $1200? I'll give the 5040 a shot and save $1800. Eventually the HT5050 will come out and the price will eventually drop and by then maybe I'll want an upgrade, or maybe Epson will have a TRUE 4K projector. Either way I figure this is a steal on the 5040.

Archaea 03-29-2019 08:45 PM

How many millions of times did you push refresh? Or did you just happen on it?

Well, over the last couple of months I'd just check occasionally. After this thread came up, I started checking a couple of times an hour, which is when I saw it back in stock the first time, but was too slow in the checkout process. So I just started checking a little more often whenever I thought about it and just got lucky that it came up again. But I didn't just sit there and refresh all day. I'd definitely keep an eye on it pretty close if you want one.

I'll let you know when it actually ships. I keep waiting for Epson to email and say it was a website error and there aren't really any available!!

Cloggerdude 03-31-2019 04:50 PM

I can’t remember the name of the one I normally use, but there are websites that will notify you whenever a section of a website changes. Sign up for one of those and you should have a really good shot of grabbing one next time they come back in stock.

Archaea 04-02-2019 11:40 AM

It came back in stock this morning. I've been spot checking it regularly since seeing this thread.

I snagged one.

Thanks @Cloggerdude for the link, and idea! This will be a good half step from my current projector until HDMI 2.1, and 4K are out and less than $2.5-$3k range (which is about my subjective ceiling for a display that gets outdated so quickly)

calvinwalfred 04-02-2019 05:54 PM

I purchased one this morning while they were in stock. Was looking for a b-stock JVC but who knows when they will be available so I went with the refurbished 5040.

B stock JVC (say RS540) is still nearly 3xs the cost of this Epson, right? ($3k ish)

kyzer soze 04-02-2019 06:55 PM

I bought my refurbished Epson 5020UB through Epson and it came with full manufactures warranty and two pairs of 3d glasses. I've had zero issues :)

Great deal on the 5040UB gents.

Archaea 04-02-2019 08:53 PM

I spent the last hour looking up information on mounts. I'm a big fan of Chief and that's all I'll buy for their reliable stability.

But their numbering strategy is confusing. As best I can tell for the Epson 5040UB, you want the:

Full mounting system:
CHF4000 (white) or the CHF4500 (black)

RPA Elite Plate:
SLB357

Or potentially a chief universal mount:
RPAUW

I found a CHF4500 for $75 shipped on ebay, open box, all pieces, and snagged it. I already have a RPAM000 for my Panasonic AE8000U, and so I only needed the plate, but the cheapest I could find the plate was $103 shipped and that's....expensive for a piece of steel with 9 holes drilled in it.
There's some ambiguity about the CHF2000 and CHF2500 working with the Epson 5040UB, but I read at least one person saying it worked great. That is also very cheap on ebay. $50 + shipping.

This page from Chief gives you several other options for this projector:

True but I was in the market for something like the RS440. I have seen the RS400 for as low as $1500. I was hoping to find a b-stock RS440 in the 1500 price rage. Got tired of waiting and went with this deal.

calvinwalfred 04-02-2019 09:34 PM

Mine is going on a shelf. Out with the Home Cinema 3500 and in with the Epson 5040UB. I picked up the 3500 refurbished from Epson a few years ago for 469. I have never had any issues with it. Hopefully it will be the same for the 5040UB.

Happened to check ~4 mins ago and it was back in stock.

Ordered one, thanks OP!!

Super excited; I think this will be a better fit for me instead of the HT3550.

tomd51 04-03-2019 09:31 AM

Just snagged one myself, looks like it was only available for abt a half hour as it's out of stock again already. Replacing a reliable 8500ub that's lasted me about 7 years with a little over 800 hrs on the original bulb, which might be tough to part with.

I'm pretty excited as well, though I don't have any complaints with it, I think my decision was part upgradeitis and part the positive comments I've poured over the past few months about the incremental improvements in the model releases since then. Even though I can easily watch sports or other non-critical viewing with low to mid-level lighting right now, I have a feeling the 5040 is going to seem like a quasar in comparison. :)

I recently moved to epson from benq 2550.
There is no argument... The epson is much better.
I don't see any major improvement in 3550 especially with contrast and black level. Yes it has an iris, and a lot of other improvements and I am yet to see it in action... But I am not sure what can beat this epson at this price.

There are sites you can use to track a webpage's changes and alert you instantly. Cost you maybe $10 bucks a month to do so.

I was going to use one, if I hadn't just stumbled upon it coming back into stock.

Hi, are they giving a full 2 year warranty ? Can you use the Rebate - receive 1 projector lamp if you purchase by 5/31/19 ?

Yes, you get a full 2 year warranty.

As far as the free bulb - probably not:
https://mediaserver.goepson.com/ImCo...367c3/original

On my order yesterday of this Epson 5040UB Refurb from the link above/Epson store the product shipping to me is
V11H713020-N and the product indicated in the rebate form is V11H713020

Therefore I'm assuming the trailing -N is the indication it is refurbished, and probably would disqualify it from the free bulb rebate.
