WTB 2-channel power amplifier/2 monoblock amplifiers

Looking for a 2-channel amplification solution. I have a Pioneer SC-85 for processing/preamp. I was looking at an Emotiva XPA-200, but they're being discontinued and can't find any used or new in stock. Any similarly powerful/clean solution is in consideration. Looking to spend no more than $400. I live near Louisville, KY for shipping/pickup purposes.

Is this for a two channel setup? The emotiva is only going to give you about 15 more watts/ch (8 ohm) at two channels driven over the SC-85.

I've already side-by-side tested the amp from the Pioneer (rated 135w) with a Yamaha R-S700 and the Yamaha (rated 100w) and the Yamaha sounded much better. Power isn't really the issue, its amp quality.

im glad you said that. most of us that have owned enough gear have figured out that AVR units dont have the amp sections that stand alones do. even if that pioneer is a ICE amp or whatever.

Take a look at this Acurus 200x3 amp. 200wpc into 8ohms and 250wpc into 4ohms. $300. Nice price. I'd contact the seller to see if this is the older flat faced amp or the later one which has an oval machined into the front face with the name Acurus - by Mondial logo inside. Both models are Mondial USA built amps. I've owned 3 Acurus amps and found them all to be very stout. Even the A150 had plenty of power. Many good reviews to be found online. I'd jump on that amp if I were looking for something to drive the front three speakers.

So you've determined it's the actual amp section rather than the processing in either unit? Why wouldn't the Pioneer continue to sound like the Pioneer with an external amp?

I ran pre-amp outs from the Pioneer to the main in on the Yamaha (goes straight to the amp) and it was a major improvement over the Pioneer. The only factor that changed was the final amp stage.

Sounded more like an AB comparison. Did you level match for your comparison? Did you try it the other way around? Not my experience that external amps make a profound difference....not compared to processing at least.

I think you might be severely overestimating the amp stage in the SC-85, it's an enormous difference. Yes for small differences blind AB with volume equalization is needed but you can tell the difference in two vastly different products without that.
