Just a warning for buyers - Ripoff alert

I hate to admit it, but I just got ripped off on these forums.

A member claimed his buddy was selling an amp. Long story short, I sent him payment and have nothing to show for it.

Since I sent cash payment via Western Union the money is gone. Yes, I know I should have used Paypal.

Should I report this to anyone or just make this a learning experience?

Beware of who you deal with on the internet, there are bad guys out there.

You have no recourse since you did not protect yourself but, you need to name the member involved so others can avoid dealing with them. I would also report it to a moderator.

Also be aware to not send money via western union. Usually a give away to a scam.

It was a new user to the forums with no history. So it's really my fault that I let my guard down.

I've always heard of Western Union scams. Well, I learned the hard way that they are real.

Do not use Western Union with someone you do not know. Never.

I reported fraud to Western Union. So they have a record of it. As I mentioned before, the money is gone.

I didn't come to the forums to find a way to get my money back. More of a warning for others.

I know but sometimes if hasn't been collected yet they can reverse it so figured I'd ask. Tough lesson to learn.

What kind of amp? I received a PM from a member telling me to buy his friend's amp.

sorry to hear about it.

Cases like this make me wonder why AVS got rid of the classifieds feedback tracker
dwaleke, Knucklehead90 and Modicen like this.

The members name is Marienjir. It really doesn't matter though, as the scammers can just make a new account.

To answer the other post, the amp in question was an Emotiva XPA-3. He even sent pictures. I'm sure he has a set of pictures for whatever piece of equipment you want.

Ultimately it comes down to not using Western Union, you have no recourse. Never do it.

By any chance was his friend [email protected] from California?

I got a PM from Marienjir in response to a WTB I posted telling me Kevin had what I was looking for and I should email him. Marienjir's info shows a join date of 10-27-2018, no thread posts, and a location of Denver, CO. That alone was enough to send up the red flag for me.

Thank you and it does matter. It might save someone who has been communicating with the POS scammer but hasn't paid yet. I won't say what I really want to about this lowest form of life because I got slapped by a mod the last time I mentioned wanting them to be run over by a bus.

You should have asked him for the damping factor on the amp and waited for his reply.

The email the scammer was using is [email protected]. He gave me a few other emails for references. They must have a whole slew of email addresses.

I think 90% of the people that say “I have a friend that is selling what you need” is a scam. Unless they are a real person with multiple posts on this forum with atleast a couple days here (No “member since yesterday”) it’s a scam. I had to deal with like 3 on my WTB Ascends Ad. Usually if they are selling or their friend is selling, they will have an AVS account and message you through there. Sorry to hear it OP. Next time you got this though.

Oh and ask for references, name, address, and phone number. That’s always a good idea.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

Sorry that happened to you man there are a lot of scumbags out there.

My buddy just had someone attempt the Craigslist scam. Had a boat for sale for 500. Buyer finally sent a shady corporate check for 2k and said to deposit the check and pay the driver who picked up the boat the other 1500. He called me and I sent him the Craigslist scam link which is a great read. https://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

Any seller I always look up the post count and also what are they posting. Frequently people sell multiple items and you can tell they are legit. Then it’s the slight risk that their account is hacked but you can pm them and get a feel. Most are legit.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I had a similar experience with the member you mentioned but fortunately didn't follow through.

We're a tight knit community and I'm thankful to know a lot of people here and on other forums by their reputation. This is a good reminder to deal with reputable members and ask for references if at all unsure. I'm sure many members here would be happy to provide references by other members and by other forums which is a big reason why I use the same username everywhere when dealing with AV equipment.

I think sellers and buyers should meet at a public spot such as a coffee shop or a mall parking lot.

There will be cases of finding that most sought after item and the seller's more than 150 miles away, in that case offer a Skype video chat prior to anything.

Western Union-definitely no.
Interac e-transfers - no.

You'd have had to send the Western Union money to some name / address. Track it through that. Especially if it's a large amount, have the CCTV footage find them.

Earlier this week, I also got a PM from user Marienjir on a WTB, I posted. User gave me an email of a user who have a NAD M17v2 for sale. I contacted the user via email. Was also sent pictures of a boxed unit. I went back and forth with some questions. Seller requested I send money via Western Union. I replied I wanted to use Paypal. Had not heard back and had not checked email for a few days. Obviously, I was dealing with a scam as well from same user.
I did some checking on address I was provided and it was for a house that was for sale in Bristol, TN.
So be weary of this as well.... Hope the moderator and AVS can track this user some how and nail them....

Seems like it's a trend - this "I know someone with X - send him an email" scam. It's happened here a few times before on other threads, and others have seen it on other forums too. Perhaps it should be written up and stickied. It's just too common.

Ignore anyone who says "I have a friend"

I never buy or sell to anyone on this forum who doesn't have a member history of a year or so & posts I can track.

When you place a WTB you identify yourself as a potential target.

Not everyone that refuses to take paypal is a scammer. I'd never take paypal as a seller as you can just as easily get ripped off that way. One thing, if the seller has been on the forums for a long time with posts and such he's probably an ok guy. Also if you request pictures, request something specific like a photo of the item with a hand showing a peace sign or put a penny on the box and photo it etc. If a person cant snap a quick photo then they don't have the item.

I posted a wanted ad for a pair B&W speakers and the same user contacted me saying that a friend of his had one for sale. That friend asked $10.8k for it and sent pics that were taken from a for sale ad in audiogon. I realized that I was dealing with a scammer and started to dilly dally ... he persisted for a few days before giving up.

I once got scammed decades ago through a Western Union payment. I had assumed at the time that all would be safe using such a large financial institution. It is amazing that decades later it remains such an easy avenue for fraud.
