If you have a Windows computer, make sure you have show hidden files, folders, and drives selected in File Explorer Options. That way you can see attachments with file extension that are potentially dangerous such as .exe or .zip files that are made to look like pdf or txt files. Here is an article that explains the issue and how to show hidden files, folders, and drives: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/new...sk-enable-now/

The issue I see with the Taiwan seller, he could claim he never received your Marantz and file a claim with Paypal. From everything I've read, PP is biased toward the buyer and PP could refund the buyer at your expense.

Giving out your email address sets you up for future scams and spams as well.

If it were me, I'd pass on this buyer.
kokishin,

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated! I've decided to pass on the buyer from Taiwan. I'm not in a huge hurry to sell the SA-10. It'd be nice to though as it's all packed up and ready to go. Just not worth the risk selling to someone that I have a feeling might end up being a headache. Thanks again!

Bill

Exclamation WARNING: Attempted thief/scammer trolling AVSFORUM

I'm sure this isn't the first and won't be the last thief/scammer trolling AVSFORUM.

After writing to @josh6113 about purchasing his Definitive BP-9060 speakers on his FS thread, I had user 505ecst reach out to me via pm saying that if I was interested he had a pair of BP-9060's for sale. After my purchase with josh6113 fell through i decided to explore what 505ecst was offering. He had pictures of the speakers and boxes saying that he could ship them to me and researched the price to ship, building a pretty good case on pricing and relatively cheap shipping. I reached out to him when I got back home from a cross country trip and that's where things started to get interesting. He specified that he needed to be paid via bitcoin wallet # 37hd9JRL5m5ETQkeSKjZk6KRrK1WAyndpP , and that he could be trusted as he's a retired navy captain named Richard Mahaffey White, and sent me a picture of his ID card with ID# 1105294421. Which obviously made me skeptical immediately.

He also followed up with 2 email addresses that I could email and get validation that these individuals had positive transactions with him, [email protected] and [email protected] which I assume are email addresses that he owns/runs or individuals who support his scamming ways. I told him I wasn't comfortable sending via bitcoin and that I would need to use an intermediary service if I was going to perform a transaction. He then agreed that I could send half of the cost up front and that he was ok with final payment after the speakers had been delivered.

I decided I'd do additional research and came across the following link on google, https://www.thegearpage.net/board/in...acker.2099516/

The above link has a user on a music gear page who went through the exact same experience back in Nov 2019 and ended up losing $1800. The story was the same, same scammer name Richard Mahaffey White, Retired Navy Captain ID with ID# 1105294421, pay via bitcoin, yada, yada, yada...

It looks like this account was stood up just to respond to my interest on josh6113's thread so I wouldn't be surprised if others are receiving emails with offers similar to what I got. This is just a warning and hopefully me linking to an alternate site sticks so that google searches can move it up the chain on searches.

Glad you didn’t lose any money. Anyone who insists on no-recourse payments from strangers online is 99% a scammer. I hate thieves but, I get in trouble when I state what I’d like to see happen to them so I’ll just leave it at that.

We can't do anything if the pm is not reported. The username (505ecst) in your post does not come up with an account on AVS. never respond to unsolicited pms.

Far too many red flags in all those payment instructions for anyone to miss. These scams notices should be forwarded to the administrators on here so that their email addresses with which they signed up here should be permanently banned and removed.

Scam alert

Be extremely careful if posting in the classifieds WTB. I recently posted WTB and I had someone contact me. I did my homework and image searched the photos that he claimed were of his 6 month old speakers and found the same photos on a different forum from july of 2016. Also looked at his signature in the message he sent me and it’s from an infinite Hot 4 which is extremely popular in Nigeria and made in the Middle East. I talked to him on the phone and he couldn’t remember where he lived so he said California but he previously told me Florida. I asked him if he lived in Nigeria he said no but he visits often. Be careful , and do your homework before conducting any type of business with anyone.

Keep up the good reporting here.. these scammers ruin it for the rest. I’m going to make it a habit to check this thread before buying or listing anything for sale on this forum.
