I'm sure this isn't the first and won't be the last thief/scammer trolling AVSFORUM.
After writing to
about purchasing his Definitive BP-9060 speakers on his FS thread, I had user 505ecst reach out to me via pm saying that if I was interested he had a pair of BP-9060's for sale. After my purchase with josh6113 fell through i decided to explore what 505ecst was offering. He had pictures of the speakers and boxes saying that he could ship them to me and researched the price to ship, building a pretty good case on pricing and relatively cheap shipping. I reached out to him when I got back home from a cross country trip and that's where things started to get interesting. He specified that he needed to be paid via bitcoin wallet # 37hd9JRL5m5ETQkeSKjZk6KRrK1WAyndpP , and that he could be trusted as he's a retired navy captain named Richard Mahaffey White, and sent me a picture of his ID card with ID# 1105294421. Which obviously made me skeptical immediately.
He also followed up with 2 email addresses that I could email and get validation that these individuals had positive transactions with him, [email protected]
and [email protected]
which I assume are email addresses that he owns/runs or individuals who support his scamming ways. I told him I wasn't comfortable sending via bitcoin and that I would need to use an intermediary service if I was going to perform a transaction. He then agreed that I could send half of the cost up front and that he was ok with final payment after the speakers had been delivered.
I decided I'd do additional research and came across the following link on google, https://www.thegearpage.net/board/in...acker.2099516/
The above link has a user on a music gear page who went through the exact same experience back in Nov 2019 and ended up losing $1800. The story was the same, same scammer name Richard Mahaffey White, Retired Navy Captain ID with ID# 1105294421, pay via bitcoin, yada, yada, yada...
It looks like this account was stood up just to respond to my interest on josh6113's thread so I wouldn't be surprised if others are receiving emails with offers similar to what I got. This is just a warning and hopefully me linking to an alternate site sticks so that google searches can move it up the chain on searches.
