ZRM-135HW-CINEGREY5D VS Carl's Ambient Light Rejecting Screen

I decided to do a comparison between these 2 screens because they both are affordable and readily available.
I actually ordered the full size material for both screens (135 inch for both).
So I plan on projecting on both large pieces of fabric at the same time (side by side).

I plan on testing with 2 projectors:
Optima HD26
&
Epson Epson Pro Cinema 1985

I've attached some photos of my project below.
This will be the first time I am setting up a screen upstairs in the living room & not in the basement.

Any comments or suggestions as I move forward are appreciated.

-Will

I've only seen one side-by-side comparison between these two so far, and that was using samples (which was still very helpful to have). I'm pretty sure this is the first full-size side-by-side of these being posted.

I'm not sure what to suggest, except it'd be cool (if possible) if you include some comparison in an otherwise dark room (lights off, at night) with a single lamp hitting the screens from the extreme side, then a bit farther back closer to the viewers, and gradually more and more near the seats..I'm assuming both screens will perform pretty similarly with the 5D having a slight advantage, but it'd be nice to know what you see between the two screens depending on where the lighting is hitting them from.

Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing/seeing what you find out with both of them.

It'll also be helpful to hear your opinion on how easy/difficult attaching each material to a frame is. The CarlsALR has some stretch to it, but I'm not sure if the 5D is stiff or stretchy..so the application might be a big difference for folks to consider even if the performance and price is somewhat similar.

Easy $25 DIY black (or any color) ALR paint +$40-$50sprayer screen mix smooth/clean and very easy to learn spraying with little/no mess.
Simple $25-40 DIY black/dark-grey ambient-light rejecting screen, grab two things from a local store..mix..roll..done.
Quick <$250 dedicated black-fabric theater room "A store that sells blinds can help your picture more than a store that sells projectors many times." -bud16415

Having the two side by side full size is really the only way to do it. While you can compare samples and point out differences, it doesn't give you any idea of how they will look full size. Also of importance is projector placement. If you are comparing screen materials with the projector on a table but your final goal is to ceiling mount or otherwise, it will look different - especially when comparing viewing angles - than the final install. Point is, when you are testing try to get everything positioned the way they will be installed. Not feasible or desirable for a lot of people but its the best way to get a true representation of how the materials will perform in your room.

Finally found where I can buy the Cinegrey 5D material and it actually works out to about the same price as Carl's ALR:

http://amzn.com/B00XBZFKPG

I was thinking it was a lot more expensive so was just going to go with Carl's ALR but since it's the same price, I'm divided again. So I eagerly await your review of both of them before I order myself!

Hey @we7313 I *hate* to be that guy but I'm dying to know your thoughts on these two screen materials

I need to order one of the two soon and I'm hovering over the buy button on the Carl's ALR.

Ok an update to this thread (and why this is taking so long).
The ZRM-135HW-CINEGREY5D is back ordered.
So I have been told it will be here mid month.
I'll share the review as soon as I get the ZRM-135HW-CINEGREY5D.

Thanks
-Will

Thanks for the response Will, I appreciate it! Since the Cinegrey was so back ordered, I went with the Carl's ALR but I'm still excited to hear your impressions on either!

I've purchased an Carl's ALR to carlofet.com and it arrived very fast. I ordered a custom size 60"x102" and they gave me 62"x106" size.

I cannot test it yet because I'm still ordering my projector (Epson Home Cinema 2045) in which I am reading their review and they gave positive comments on it, which is forgiving in terms of average projector.

Definitely watching closely to see the outcome. How are you planning on making the frames? Wood frame and staples or other? Do you think that material will handle staples without tearing?
