New Stewart StudioTek130 install

**BEFORE AND AFTER PICS ADDED STARTING AT POST 14**

The Stewart StudioTek 130 arrived! The screen and the 4K player (backordered) are the final 2 items to go into V2.0 of the theatre (dedicated theatre in our custom home built 4 years ago). This is replacing a 120" Stewart FireHawk G3 1.78:1 AR with THX Microperf. The outgoing screen and the new are virtually the exact same height which was by design (new one is a negligible .75" taller). The outgoing screen was perfect in size until we watch scope movies. Wanting to preserve the same height, the new screen basically takes the old dimension and pulls the sides out to scope AR for a true CIH setup. In math terms, the new screen is 35% greater in surface area but more importantly, a 79% larger 2.35 image. I can't explain just how huge (pun intended) this is. Firing up a scope movie and then selecting the lens memory for 2.35/2.40 it is very impressive and confirms to us just how worth this "upgrade" was.

Specs:
2.35:1 AR StudioTek 130 with THX Microperf
152" Diag
EZ Mount system (very cool setup)

Projector:
JVC RS600

I'll post up BEFORE and AFTER pics once installed and I take a few pics.

Congrats, Ray! Looks excellent. It's the Porsche of screens ;) I have a RS500 and have tested the Stewart Micro-perf 1.3 material and like the brightness & sharpness that none of the woven screen samples I have seem to provide. I recently was at Axpona where Seaton Sound was demoing speakers with a Stewart Studio-tek 1.3 micro-perf with the Sony 5000es projector. The screen was 2.35 and 14 feet wide! I was viewing from 12 feet back and it looked and sounded incredible. The Seaton Sound Catalyst 12C was used for the center channel.

You'll have to let me know how the brightness is when you watch a movie. :)

Haha, no wonder I'm drawn to these screens. I'm a huge Porschephile :) My two favorite places in the home are the theatre room and the garage. Both I got to design with the architect when we started the build process on our new home. Trying to explain to an architect that we wanted a room with NO WINDOWS was very hard for him to accept. Let's just say I almost fired him because he was adamant that windows should be in there for resale. What? I'm paying for this so just design what I request!

Last night was our first night with the screen. All I have done is "good enough" calibration using the Disney WOW calibration Blu-ray. Professional calibration won't be done until probably June/July. But I can say that the combination of the RS600 and this screen is a match made in heaven. The colors just popped and the brightness was beyond words. Such an amazing picture. I can't wait to for the 4K player to finally arrive so the room will be complete and I can see how well this setup really shines.

Congrats and thank you Ray for your purchase of your new Scope StudioTek screen. From the photos it looks more proportional to your room dimensions than a 1.78 aspect ratio. Can you post a few more photos of your theater? It looks like a gorgeous room.
BTW, looks like we have several things in common. We both like projecting high fidelity images and Porsche's. I have an older classic air cooled, totally stock, Carrera Sunday car that I enjoy driving and tinkering with.

Thanks all for the compliments! I have been running a million miles an hour today with the kiddos sports, etc, and then a Cinco de Mayo party this evening. I will take many pics of the finished product tomorrow and post up. I'll also post up a few pics of my garage toys :) Don, love the Carrera CAB. Very nice.

And Don, as always, thank you for all the assistance during the process. You have a fantastic product and a customer for life here. Cheers!

Sweet GT3! The theater room looks awesome as well. The room looks like it was designed for that size and ratio screen. :)

Thanks! I've gone through about a dozen P-cars over the last decade (both pleasure and racing) but have held on to a few that just hit all the right buttons. That is one of them. It's just an amazing machine. Just wish I drove it more.

You would be correct, at least on the screen height :) for the room. When we designed the home, the theatre was one of the rooms that I spent a lot of time designing with the architect, the theatre company we use, and our builder (size, features, sound control, equipment, etc). The couple items I wasn't 100% sure on was the projector and the screen AR. We decided that since most of our viewing was 1.78 (network TV), that we'd go with the AR screen that matches that (1.78). The height was approximately 60" which put us in the 120" 1.78 screen size. The projectors available at the time (4 years ago) didn't have the features we were looking for at the price point we were willing to pay ($10K for a projector was my sweet spot). Since nothing could give us motorized lens memory, 4K, etc, for $10K we "settled" on the Epson Pro Cinema 6020UB which was like $3500 at the time. Enough for me to get a pretty good image and not feel like I wasted $3500.

Over the last year I have become more and more unhappy with the scope AR movies on the 1.78 screen and realizing I built the room for movies, I needed to have a screen that supported that AR. Since we had the perfect 1.78 screen size already, it was just a matter of getting the 2.35 screen that fit with that same height and it turned out perfect. Almost, like it was meant for that space. And now we have an 80% larger scope AR movie size!

Can't wait for the 4K player to get in (hopefully this week) and then the system calibrated.

The new Sony UBP-X800. I found it in stock at Best Buy of all places but... Apparently the supply chain is backordered and since I already ordered it through my dealer I'm just going to wait. Hoping it will be in this week.

your screen and room look great. very nice. Having my Cima installed on monday. can't wait. I have the x800. so far its been a great player.

Room looks good. The new screen size fits that room much better than the 120" diagonal 16:9.

Your home cinema room looks great! Thank you for posting. I like the dark green color scheme and ceiling details too.

Thanks Mike. Agree 100%. Wife wasn't so sure until it went in and thought out loud "wow, makes the other one look so small!!!" It's funny though, I explained to her the concept of CIH and that the screen is basically the same height as the previous but it's the proper screen for all formats now by moving to 2.35 width.

Thanks Don! The iPhone is really poor at capturing color (or gray scale). The room is actually 2 different brown/grays. The lighter color is "intellectual gray" and the darker battleship gray looking color is called "urban bronze". They are both from the Sherwin Williams same color swatch. https://www.sherwin-williams.com/hom...ngColors&p=PS0

I just hopped over here from JVC thread to see your screen pictures but I noticed your seating.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get those? I saw something similar a few weeks ago and these look almost identical. The ones I saw were more of a fabric material instead of leather, which I believe your chairs are. :)

Don't mind at all. They are custom order by Palliser. I picked the chair style I liked and then picked the fabric type/color, deviated stitching color, and various chair options (LEDs, power recline, trays). They turned out fantastic. My only complaint is the LEDs don't seem to be well thought out as you cannot turn them on if you are going to recline as the LED light blast from under the chair lights up the screen blue. Ugh. I'm debating just disconnecting the LED bar that is underneath the chair b/c I do like the lighted cup holders but they are either both on or both off.

And the leather options are almost countless. If you really want to get insane pricing, just go straight to the most rare, high end leather they offer. I chose middle of the road. :D

Thanks! I priced out some Palliser Flicks, but they were WAY too much for my budget. I found some similar ones at a local furniture store that hit all the features I wanted for the most part. The adjustable head rest is what I really want with our next seating... My wife isn't a big fan of the leather, so the fabric is going to be her first choice. :)

BTW - I am also a HUGE ChadB fan. He has been calibrating every audio and video system I have owned since 2003. Only once in all those years was I not 100% satisfied when he left and that time it was because we discovered a setting that accidentally got turned off. Once we figured it out, then I was back to being 100% satisfied. :D

Yeah, I agree, the Palliser stuff can get pricey. I was only able to rationalize it since we were building our custom dream home and designed the theater with the understanding that we were going to have to probably spend more than we wanted in order to get the perfect theater room.

And yes, Chad is awesome and good guy to boot. Enjoying just chatting with him when he's here. I'll have him out yearly to tweak and update any other new equipment.

Craig Peer 08-09-2017 09:50 AM

Your theater turned out quite nice ! :)

996911 08-09-2017 10:05 AM

Thanks Craig! Now if I can just figure out what to do about the light reflections from the ceiling. The two-tone lighter color looks like a great idea in the design phase but it's a picture killer!
