Lets talk UST + ALR.... :)

I'm curious who all makes/sells ultra short throw ALR screens.. I have (in my own research) found 2 solid vendors, but I am 1 guy who is kind of new to this space so... Not asking for a "which is better" just a list of make/model of short throw screens that are ALR.

Here are the two I have found:
Screen Innovations : Short Throw material (works on 5 and 7 series from what I can tell) ~ $4500 at 100" 16:9
Elite Screens : AEON CLR ~ $1200 at 100" 16:9

So what other screen makes/models are playing in this space? (or is it really a 2 horse race)

The way ALR works is the coating on the screen skips light off the screen coming from steep angles. UST puts the projector light into the same category as the ambient light.

I don’t know how these screens work bit they have to allow light from the top but not from the sides. I suspect that is hard to do and that’s why more people are not doing it.

Apparently EluneVision has a line on Screen Innovations ST screen material... They are running about 1500 less than SI screens.. I though SI was super secret about their material.. Is this normal for EluneVision?

They all use an extra layer of optical shapes to refract low angle light forward, but high angle light is especially harshly redirected.. and forward light would scatter as well.. (in theory)

These must be the hottest screens on the market. I’ve been calling around and searching online for a week and no one has the Viewsonic 100” or Elite 100” in stock. Most places said mid March ?? Is the demand really that high ?

What direction is the ambient light coming from? Da-lite Parallax UST might be a good solution for some but doesn't do as good with ambient light coming from the sides.

Right! same thing... my wall "supports" 120 as far as space, but we are sitting a touch close, plus I am a little worried about the decrease in brightness.... I am eager to to get something so I may just get the 120, because apparently that size is find-able.

Check out the Chinese manufactures XY Screens and Snowhite Screens. They have fixed frame ultra short throw screen models from 90 inch to 120 inch. I just ordered one myself from Snowhite Screens at 100” and got it at a pretty excellent price.

I wasn't sure if that website was legit or not ? I couldn't find much about them or anyone who had ordered from them.

I have the Elite Screens ALR and love it with my PF1000u. No complaints

Just set up a Snowhite 100” screen. Very good price and great results! Check the Viewsonic PX800HD with BCP120 Screen discussion for pics of screen and assembly.

Can we add in retractable?

I've been trying (unsuccessfully it seems) to add "retractable" to the UST + ALR combo. I'd like to deal with side lighted environment to install a TV replacement in a family room. I definitely want this to be retractable so that when we're not watching, I can hide the screen.

I just recently found Carl's site and it looks like his material can be used in this scenario, but a) its the only UST/ALR/Retractable combo i've found and b) i'm not sure how i feel about building my own. Any alternatives or pre-built options? Also would be great to get something better than 40deg viewing angle...

thanks much!

Did you end up getting your screen? If so, how do you like it?

Hi everyone,

Just sharing how the ALR screens work. As seen in the picture attached, the screen can only be fixed in one single direction, with the louvres pointing up, in order to reject ambient light from above. therefore absorbing light from your UST projector, retaining its colour and brightness. ALR sreens only works on Fixed Frame Screens, given its nature of material that is soft. The fixed frames will give enough tension, in order to have a perfectly flat surface for the screen to be at its best. Hope this helps.
