SI Black Diamond 1.4 and Sony VPL-VW295ES

I have a SI Black Diamond 1.4 115". Current pj is a Sony VPL-HW50ES. Considering moving to a VPL-VW295ES. Any issues with this screen and pj combo?

My friend has a 285ES on this exact screen in his living room. It's a great combo in that situation. Not going to be good if you are in a dedicated light controlled room.

Video: JVC RS4500 135" screen in pure black room no light, htpc nvidia 1080ti.
Audio: Anthem mrx720 running 7.1.4, McIntosh MC-303, MC-152, B&W 802d3 LR, B&W HTM1D3 center, B&W 805d3 surround, B&W 702S2 rear, B&W 706s2 x 4 shelf mounted for atmos, 2 sub arrays both infinite baffle: 4x15 fi audio running on behringer ep4000 + 4x12 fi audio running on 2nd ep4000.

Thank you. What's the issue with a dedicated light controlled room?

Hi Scchang,

I have a black diamond 1.4 zero edge 110'' diagonal with the Epson LS10000 laser projector. In a fully light controlled room with dark walls and almost 100% light control you simply cannot beat a unity screen. There are so few artefacts on screen and it brings out the best in the projector assuming the screen size is compatible with the projected light output. Black diamond is great for compromised rooms like mine with white walls and windows where a unity screen would look washed out even at night due to the projected light reflections bouncing off the walls and back onto the screen. Most ALR screens with gain suffer with moderate texturing issues often referred to as sparkles. Also there can be issues around some hot spotting. None of these problems affect a screen of unity gain which has unparalleled uniformity. For me, the stunning eye popping image and superb contrast of the black diamond in my environment fully outweighs the artefacts which I rarely notice these days. But other peoples milage does vary. Hope this helps,
Regards,
Paul Sim.

Thanks Paul,

My room is not light controlled which is why I chose the 1.4 gain screen. It works wonderfully to reject ambient light. Daytime viewing is very acceptable. My initial reason for asking which I didn't articulate well was whether there would be any issues with 4K and this screen. I hope I’m correct in assuming that there aren't any issues specific to 4K v. 1080p.

4K looks good on the black diamond 2.

scchang,
This may sound like a dumb question, but does the brightness appear to be less with the 1.4 gain ALR screen vs a 1.0 white screen? I read somewhere that the ALR screens appear to be "darker" even with gain as high as 1.4. Have you found this to be true?
