Whats the best way to play around and see what is best for ur surroundings?

Hey, so I'm currently projecting my Sony HW40es on a beige wall and it looks ok.

I'm debating between a grey or white screen and will explore paint later.

My issue is how do I know what works best and what does't without having to buy a grey screen, then a white screen etc..

Could I just buy this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-16-9-...9291e3a653c0fe

and then paint it? and experiment? i.e. paint it grey on one half, leave the other half at 1.1 gain and project and see what i like myself or am i wrong here?

My gut is telling me (and the advice I've had) I likely need a grey screen but projecting my Hw40ES on the walll, i can't help but feel at brightness 50% in the dark, its a bit dim.. the whites aren't white.. but then they're projected onto a wall and not a screen so wanted to experiment and explore this option without painting my actual wall.
