I have 136" 2.35:1 screen which is a just a tad bigger than what you see when watching 2.35:1 movies. I think it looks amazing in 3D, so much so that I prefer it to 4K. I use Cinema, High lamp, 0 iris, gamma normal and those cheap Samsung glasses.

Well that is weird. I'll have to make another test run with a different movie or two. Thank you for the info.

Can you take a photo of what it looks like through the glasses? another member had a similar issue and it was a transmitter issue. same setup, JVC transmitter and Xpand glasses. he ended up with this kit which includes the xpand RF transmitter. I use this kit and it works perfect.

Just compared a really old Pioneer to a newer Denon, I found the same thing a lot of people found. The Pioneer was better for music because it had more REVERB in the sound (like a tiny tiny bit of Echo, sounds bad but it actually made almost all music sound better).

The Denon was better for movies as it handled the surround sound with more discernment and separation (I think this is just an isssue with some older Pioneers).

Not sure how a new Pioneer compares to an older one. I have a hard time with the old Pioneer trying to ensure it is not processing the sound (finding the natural modes), because it's hard to be certain as there are too many settings. The Denon has like no processing at all, wish it had more options.

Debating on the Yamahoo or Mudrantz or So-Knee next...

Remember saying to myself, this will be a 4K/UHD/ATMOS pre-order no-brainer, but I just may skip the 3D version because there just wasn't enough 3D impact.

I Pre-ordered the 4K/UHD Steelbook from BB as soon as it was available and it sold out in record time,
It's likely to arrive Thursday or Friday, but when I stopped in at Best Buy on the way home yesterday to pick an XBO game, they actually had a few steelies left in store
...So I bought another one, will leave the other as a sealed double (I've got a LOT of those already) .

I watched the UHD right after the 3D viewing. of all the 3D / UHD double dips, this is one of the few I could have passed on the 3D version. It's relatively subtle throughout the movie and the UHD looks amazing, one of my new favorites. the WCG, shadow detail and overall sharpness is excellent.

I've used full rip ISO files for years, and my entire collection is in ISO, but it has gradually dawned on me that I almost never look at the extras anymore, I'm only ever interested in the main audio track, and accessing the movie through menus is no longer acceptable for my older-age impatience. So I'm going through the process of converting them all to MKV so I can play straight into the movie with a single click.

So far this seems to work well, and there appear to be many more devices that will happily play MKV's than will play ISO's. So its all good.

However I'm still unsure on the way forward with 3D rips. I'm reading that MakeMKV generates a MKV MVC file, and I'm also reading that a number of media players don't support this file type?

Is there another/recommended way to create lossless 3D MKV files, or am I better just sticking to ISO for 3D rips?
i think it depends on what your target playback device will be. I used to have to pull ISO to 3D MVC back when I used the Mede8ter.

Dune 4K Solo does an excellent job with 2D / 3D BD ISO, even seamless branch Disney titles. it doesn't play back 3D MVC files though.

Zidoo X8/X9s are good with either 2D / 3D ISO or 3D MVC but does struggle with seamless branch titles like Cars 3 3D so for those titles I rip to 3D MVC MKV. Some have stated the egreat with the same chipset handles seamless branch so maybe it can get fixed with an update.

I plan on picking up the new Dune as soon as it's released to see what it's capable of.

UHD on the Zidoo looks excellent, surprising for a $100 player.

Hi! I tried it again last night to take a picture, but this time it worked! With high lamp aperture 0 in cinema mode it was completely watchable. I'll have to watch couple more movies to see if I like the 3D or not, but at least it works now. Thank you all for help

Figured, mise well check the mailbox before I call the CC company, and lo and behold...
There they were, all qty (5) 3D movies I ordered for $62, not a bad deal.
My not-so-funny story about them is that they never did ship anything to me. OR respond to any of my emails, politely requestng either a status update, a Tracking #, or any indication that anyone there was still alive. That was back around Thanksgiving, and I was about to ping them for the 3rd and final time. But I now see their entire web site directs to a page saying...

"STORE IS CLOSED

Dear Valued Customers, We have closed the store. All remaining orders are fullfilled, you should receive them shortly. Thank you for your business."

Sigh. Contrary to their claim, they certainly did not fulfill MY order. They DID take my money though. Imagine that. Time to give my CC company a call.

Should be a quick and easy chargeback.

Last problem I had on a CC was a rental car company didn't have my reservation, so I show up and there is no car. They billed me a $100 no show fee as if they actually did have the car.

Uh huh, it was painless though through Citi's web site, the chargeback approval took 30 seconds.

Edit:
My only fear with CITI Bank is that their warranty process might be hard to collect on (no idea). I know Amex is easy to deal with for their + 1 year warranty on purchases, but Citi offers +2 years on purchases for warranty, but the BIG question remains is if I need to ever use that warranty, will they honor it as easily as Amex. NO idea... Hopefully so...

zombie10k, I'm using a Zidoo X9s with my JVC RS540 to play my MKV and 3D MKV files and it works great. My UHD titles also play great except for that my blacks are not as dark as when I play them on disc. It's especially noticeable on the upper and lower black bars, they are grayish... I've got everything set to auto in the Zidoo video settings and the UHD setting is on. Any idea on what is set-up wrong? Thanks

Edit (again):

Just ordered a 109" Draper Accuscreen Electric for $9 ($58 after shipping) to compare masking between "homemade panels" and electric method (move up and let bars overflow onto velvet wall)...

I had to order the 16:10 screen though, as the rest were out of stock (unless I went down to 92").
Since it's electric the only difference is I will lose some of the velvet border above the screen when I rise it 5" to make it a 16:9 screen, but I can likely add my own velvet sticky material to extend the velvet anyhow (I did this to repair a gash in an HP screen once before).

This screen seemed to have ok ratings for the reviews that were online. The material is just plain white matte, so I figure - how bad can it really be (we shall find out)!

Provantage still has the smaller 92" ones for $10
http://www.provantage.com/draper-acc...3~7ASCR004.htm

Stay tuned to see how a $10 Draper electric screen holds up vs. the HP 2.4 gain...

but was considering just the plastic case for the 4K/UHD locally (cheaper) since I really only needed 1 in Steel.

But I caved in and pre-ordered the BB Steelbook too,
no cover art at the time, just expected it to look like the black cover on Zavvi.

Well this showed up on BB.ca this morning

already sold out at BB.ca (Canada)

This could be one of the first triple dips, that 40 page exclusive book is pretty cool.

The Zavvi SB 3D cover is likely a placeholder for final artwork, we'll find out when they arrive. i'm surprised it's not sold out yet.

+1, I posted the UK link in the RS500/600 thread. I've watched One Ocean and Deep Sea, Corral Reefs is next tonight. Amazing footage they have captured in this release. The UHD is definitely worth it over the BD. I saw the BD and it's compressed + lacks the pop of the WCG on the UHD release.

some background on how they filmed this. The squid wars was a nail biting, edge of seat moment. I had to rewind that multiple to make sure I was seeing what was happening.. wow.

Zombie, the post you linked doesn't show region free, rather it's B. But since you were able to watch it then I guess it's free then.

Got it, thanks to both you and rwestley. I've noticed some of the most recent releases are looking more and more stellar. Watching Blade Runner 2049 last weekend completely took my breath away...immediately, I forgot about the next anticipated 4K + laser. I just wished the disc came with a separate format in Imax version to truly appreciate syd mead's design of the film.

Stupid question, but do I want standard global or just standard for shipping? Never ordered from the UK site before. I assume standard global, but don't know exactly what the difference is.

+1 on that statement. I double dipped 3D / UHD on Blade Runner 2049, one of the first I would say to skip the 3D. Roger Deakins was pretty blunt about 3D for this title, they didn't film it with 3D in mind and it's relatively subtle throughout the fim. the UHD is amazing, one of my new favorites to show guests.

Plus that ATMOS track is A++!

I went for the global shipping, the standard will take longer. One time I did standard and it took 2+ weeks. Global was only a few days

This might be my 'end game' screen:

http://elunevision.com/screens/refer...tab-tensioned/

Looks like the masking is affixed to the screen surface though (that won't work), maybe Elunevision make some that have the permanent unmovable masked border that are electric, not sure.

If not, then I have to decide, make my own 'floating mask' attachment or find a different screen.

some background on how they filmed this. The squid wars was a nail biting, edge of seat moment. I had to rewind that multiple to make sure I was seeing what was happening.. wow.

What are the chances of HDR10+ support from upcoming projectors, especially later this year?

At some point we have to stop fiddling around with different modes provided by current UHD players in dealing with static metadata and just enjoy watching. At least we already know that the next Panasonic player will support HDR10+ with its new hdx processor to allow tone-mapping frame by frame. This optimizer for sure changes the game and I'm not even sure that hdmi 2.1 is required for it.

No, really I cannot. This is the first electric screen I've ever had to experiment with masking...

No MORE BLACK BARS, be gone thy black bars :P
No More Black Bars

Thanks to inspiration from forum member Craig Peer:

Simple solution really. Go with two different AR electric drop screens.
It's been one of the best additions to our HT. I'm surprised that more people don't do it???
Instead of fooling around with variable geometry masking, just add a second screen.
In 2014, Our long time 16 x 9 DaLite Cosmo Electrol HP 2.8 screen got a new playmate. An Elite Cinetension 2.35:1 "scope" electric drop screen. They share their playtime with a Sharp Z30K (lens memory). Push a few buttons and NO MORE BLACK BARS. Easy peasy...
