I have a velvet cave and a reference 115 unity screen.
The native contrast on the X590 and NX5 are the same (both 40,000:1). Did you mean the X790 rather than the X590? Careful, because both are still available in Canada without much of a difference in price following the latest price cut on the X790.

I've seen X790 so low in the past 2 weeks that I have regrets about going with my 285es. You should definately try to see what's the best price you can get on a X790. With a little shopping you're going to be surprised.

Yes, I made a typo, I was referring to the 790. And yes it can be had in Canada for a very good price if I had the money now I would buy it like yesterday.lol As it is I have to wait a few months to have the money. lol

Ya I made a typo, was referring to the 790. The big increase in contrast and lumens over my X500 makes it a very nice upgrade for about what I paid for my X500 when it came out.

No I need a new PJ, I have a ridiculous amount of hours on it been through several bulbs, I have my own calibration equipment and a fancy 3Dlut box. It just doesn't have the lumens for my personal preference, it has less then the RS400, I think calibrated on my screen I am lucky to be getting 800 lumens(just a guess). I prefer burning my eyeballs out bright.....lmao Well not really but I want more headroom so I can crank the Iris and try to get as much of the contrast as I can. Besides my machine is pretty old really and I have to think the 790 is a significant step up in overall quality, even if the X500 still has a great image.

Oh, I thought you had a RS400. I get confused at the RS/X series conversion. I think you should should wait to read reviews but I'd probably recommend going straight to the NX7. I know it's more money, but it is a true 4K projector, its brighter and probably most importantly has built in tone mapping. With these features, you're likely to keep it much longer. I guess getting an older model might make sense at half price of an NX7 or something, but I'm sticking with my RS400 until I'm satisfied with reviews from a NX7 or decide to wait for it's successor. I was offered a RS620 for half price of a NX7 and said no because it wasn't what I really want.

The NX7 is twice the cost of the 790, when I pay 10grand it's going to be laser. Thinking I'll just get a Panasonic player for tone mapping.

I'll be surprised if the new JVCs can match the 820 for tone mapping. Quality comparisons will be interesting. Every disc I throw at the 820 looks good from a highlight perspective; nothing odd or unnatural with compressed highlights. Even with well done custom Arve curves, I would occasionally run into this but have not at all with the 820.

Ya, definitely going with the JVC 790R and for a few reasons.

1.cost, with the money I save over buying the JVC X5 I can buy a new 4K player and a pair of Focal Clear headphones...lol

2. 8K is on the way lasers too. I know it is a ways off but in 5 years I will be buying a 4k/8k e-shift JVC with a laser.?.

3. Massive upgrade over the JVC X500, way more lumens and contrast plus longer lasting bulbs, tired of changing out every 1500hrs because it is way too dim.

Listening with Focal Elex headphones, Topping DSD Dac, SENCUN-audio tube preamp with tone control and Little Dot hybrid tube amp with GE tubes.

I don't recall, have you had DLP's in your blacked out room before? one of the common comments I've read about the UHZ65 was RBE since it uses an RGBY color wheel.

did you verify if the lens shift will work with where you have your projector located?

if you pick it up please keep us posted. I don't think most owners had them in a fully light treated room.

I had a Benq W7000 but it wasn't a velvet room, still it was black and light controlled.

I can build a shelf above my PJ port.

Just really tired of bulbs, like seriously .... long cold winters and at least a movie a day habit gets costly, 2 bulbs a year.lol

I still have my ND filters from my W7000, might help

The rainbows on the current crop of DLP's are a bit irritating IMO.

I saw a BenQ HT2050 - I saw an insane amount of rainbows.

Funny though, never saw a single one on those older Samsung DLP RPTVs from the mid 2000s.

I never saw them much nor did they bother me " back in the day ". I have a theory though. I've been watching 3 chip projectors since early 2009 - nearly 10 years. I'm so used to 3 chips, my brain just can't go back !

Yikes, maybe I'll go with the JVC 590 over the 790 and grab a cheap dlp for sports and noncritical viewing. I have to imagine the 590 is still a significant upgrade from my X500.

I went from the X500 last summer to the RS440 later in the fall. It's definitely a notable upgrade particularly with eshift and more brightness with a more stable lamp. It's also said to be much better with 3D and gaming lag although I do neither.

I have not seen a single one on my w7000 all these years in 2d or 3d thankfully somehow. I saw them so bad on my first DLP which was a Toshiba RPTV that I returned it for a refund, but I just dont see them on my benq.

I even saw rainbows on that $80K single chip Barco projector at Cedia 2017. That too was irritating.

I am sensitive to the RBE too. I never saw them on my Samsung SP-A800B though (which is available for sale cheap BTW).

Right with you guys. Have test-viewed a variety of single-chip DLP projectors over the years at various dealers. I can't watch a DLP for any length of time because the nonstop rainbows drive me nuts. Eventually I get a splitting headache.

I heard Optoma may be coming out with an LED, would hope it will be priced like the UHZ65. The benQ versions are bit pricey. But I understand there is less chance of RBE?

Absolutely agreed, it's a great deal on the Elunevision screens. I used to have a Stewart StudioTek 1.3 (1st-gen) and it was great too, but the sparkles during bright scenes eventually drove me to sell it. No sparkles at all with the Elunevision and have been very happy with it over the past few years with my old Epson 6030. Can't wait to see this "Reference 4K" screen in actual 4K with the NX7!
