Here is a comparison between Fidelio Velvet and Soprano Velvet from Vogue Fabrics. Fidelio may be just a little bit darker but Soprano is very good. It also comes in 60" wide instead of the Fidelio 44" wide. The price for Soprano is $29.99 yard and Fidelio is $39.99 yard but the wholesale price for Soprano 18 yards bolt is $423 ($23.5 yard) making the price even better. I'm just waiting for the samples of Fidelio and Baritone from Seymour AV but at this point Soprano is about to be the one I'll be ordering.

I hope it turns out awesome man. Excited you found something you like.

I’m about to do my ceiling about 3-4 feet out from the screen with 1/4 plywood wrapped in velvet. I just finished the screen wall and sidewalls. Ceiling and carpet are next.

Yes. I got 15 yards of Soprano Velvet from their retail store as the wholesale bolt was not in stock and it takes to JB Martin between 6 to 8 weeks to manufacture it. The Soprano Velvet is basically a Fidelio Velvet but about 2% less black but the advantage of the Soprano Velvet is that it comes in 58" wide while the Fidelio Velvet is only 44" wide. Both of them are made by JB Martin here in the USA.

I’m looking forward to seeing how well it compares to what you currently have. I just picked up 13 more yards of JR3 to finish everything out.

That velour tape you turned me on to works AWESOME. I have a 1/2 hole punch that I use on it to pop out screw covers for my panels.

I also used it for the baseboards like you did. Good stuff. I used the 60 foot 4 inch role. Still have a bunch of it left.

Thanks for the comparison! You should test them with different angle of incidence between the light and your eye. Some velvets like fidelio perform exceptionally when you are viewing the velvet from the same direction as the light source, which is why it is so good for screen masking. Other velvets may do just as good for cheaper when the light source is at the opposite side of the velvet from your viewing position, such as velvet on the ceiling or side walls.

Ha – I remember many/many a yrs ago I mentioned I had done my room in total velvet on some forum we were on ( maybe Seaton)–

Need help for a set up in a family room. My ceiling is a dark grey colour and walls are dark red was thinking about blacking out the first 3'-5' on the side walls. Can't do Velvet what other options can be used thanks.

Are you able to hang curtains? I made velvet curtains, it was relatively straight forward. If the walls have to stay bare then the black Rosco paint may be the only alternative but it's definitely not as dark / light resistant as the velvet.

I did that too about 5 ft out . That lasted a week. Prepare to end up doing your whole ceiling 😉

My wife will kill me - though not for what you think.

I didn't like the way the velvet looked when I was just stapling it to the wall. So - I've been doing 1/4 sheets of plywood wrapped in it. Works perfect and adds mass to the walls.

I've been doing 2' x 4' pieces (pre-cut from HD) and I use an upholstery stapler (Porter Cable) to attach it to the panels.

I don't want to really dirty the velvet up in the garage on the floor - so I do it in the house - in the entry way - on the wood floor.

It's flat, not dirty, and it's not 35 degrees like the garage.

This means my air compressor is in the house...and I'm shooting a pneumatic stapler...in the house.

Fun times.

I'm using the same method. I got 4' x 8' x 7/32" underlayment panels from Home Depot and asked them to cut at 2' x 4' These are the ones I got:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Underlay...1178/203183010

Next week I'll be replacing the crappy velvet I got from Amazon with JB Martin Soprano Velvet. I may need to get new underlayment panels as it would take more time to get the fabric and T50 staples from the panels than paying $40 for a new set of panels. I use two staplers, one with T50 staples and the other with JT21 staples and they work just great. Then I put the panels on the wall with black drywall screws and covered with 1/2' circles of self adhesive velour tape. I also do everything inside the living room. I have a 6ft folding table to cut and wrap the panels with velvet and a Keter Folding Compact Workbench Sawhorse Work Table outside in the balcony to custom cut a few panels.

I would get new panels. Unless you can pull all of the staples easily.

Sweet! Can’t wait to see it. I’ve gotten pretty good with this gun. I can’t do an entire 2’ x 4’ panel in about 2-4 minutes.

Thanks! I love them. The bracket and the ability to aim them is worth its weight in gold. They’re perfect. They match up well with the JTR stuff I have and they have a huge dispersion pattern. I’m using them for rear heights also.

Heights - DTS:X
Tops - Atmos

I've got JR3 on my screen wall and it turned into a black hole! I'm considering doing the ceiling in front of the screen but haven't come up with a way of getting it up there that looks right. Also, and more importantly, I need some kind of anti-reflection film for my stage light lenses. I notice these far more than the semi-eggshell paint on the ceiling directly in front of my screen. Anyone have any ideas on what to use on the lenses?

I used velvet with magnets attached to a black inner facing then sewn all together. I have a drop ceiling that I attached velvet to each ceiling tile and then I use black protostar tape for the grid. When the lights are out you really can't see the ceiling at all when you're watching a movie I know it doesn't look like that from the picture but I had to put the flash on to take the picture.

My screen is 120 in Seymour glacier white and it is about 3 in from my ceiling

Got the JB Martin Soprano Black Velvet yesterday and started redoing my velvet blacking. Panels are rewrapped already and I should be done with the project by the end of today. Here is a picture comparing Soprano Black Velvet with what I got from Amazon, which I think is not even Velvet. The material from Amazon was sold by Maybecca as Triple Black Velvet 30 yards. A picture worth more than a thousand words.

Cool picture, do you still have some Joanne Royalty 3 you could put beside your new panels? Curious the difference there if I ever redo my room (or more likely move).

Here you go: Joann's Royalty 3 Black Velvet vs JB Martin Soprano Black Velvet.

JB Martin Soprano Black Velvet is literally JB Martin Fidelio but the pile is less dense, meaning a bit less expensive. The good advantage of Soprano is that the velvet is 60" wide while Fidelio is 44" wide.
