I am quite new to home theater and do not have a lot of $$$ to spend.

However, I have an opportunity to purchase a very high end (for it's time) Qualia Q004-R1 SXRD (MSRP $24,000) for $750.....or......
a newer model, the VPL-VW40 for $1000

Any help, suggestions, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

The Qualia for sure. You should know that replacement bulbs are about as expensive as the unit you're going to buy. The VW40 is a much less expensive (when it was new) projector with much cheaper components and picture quality.

Only the quaila was Sonys first try at SXRD front projection and every model since then (maybe 10 new generations now) have improved the process.

It came out in 2004 so effectively its ten years old. I read the bulb in $3000 but hopefully that's wrong.

That projector was made to be very high quality more so than later models.

However,.. Afterwords you had the ruby and then another $10,000 follow up.

Then there was the vw40, vw50, vw60 which were nearly identical with minor enhancements.

And a few more waves ... None of which aspired to be a $10,000 model until they started adding ES to the description.

I wouldn't go for either the qualia or the vw40 but I do love my vw60.

I would look into the various models and wait for a good price on one of the even newer ones.

I was in the same boat. I was looking for the best deal under $1000. I bought a qualia 004 and can tell you after calibrating it looks fantastic. I am very happy with the unit and if you can find a good condition one for under $1000 pick it up. There are a few concerns you should have. 1 how much life is left on the bulb. If you are luck you may find a cermax 700w buld that will work in the qualia for $500 or less. I bought an extra bulb at the same time as to not be stuck without a projector for an extended time. But these do not come on the market that often and if you are stuck in a pinch to find a bulb you may pay $1000 or more. 2 was the GB powerboard fixed. These units all have a power supply board that will need a repair at some point. The unit I purchased had a bad board. It cost about $400-$500 to repair. also the lenses are hard to find. If the unit you are buying does not come fitted with a lens that works for you you will be looking for a long time trying to find the proper one. 3. the unit will not do 1080p ,1080i looks great but this was my issue. The apple TV3 outputs only 1080p or 720p so you cannot really use this with a qualia 004 to its full potential. I had to find a cheep scaler that takes 1080p and will trascode to 1080i. ( it looks fantastic once set up) and the last thing is to output 1080p24 from your bluray you will need yet another scaler that will take 1080p24 and output 108024sf. it is not so much a scaled trancode as a different spec input. The lumagen vision scalers work good and are cheep on ebay. All in all I spent $500 on broke qualia 004 spent $400 to fix and spent another $300 on two used scalers. I bout a short thoe lens for $75 ( just to have ) and an extra cermax 700w bulb new back stock that was in a Christie housing for a vista projector ( bulb is the same ) for $150. I love the image I don't care about 3d and for me the blacks look good.
