Throw distance is about 14'. Screen is 120.4" 16:9 SeymourAV acoustically transparent retractable. Unfortunately it's not in a dedicated HT room (maybe someday if we build a house or move where their is a basement or something). Its in my living room with tan/brown walls and white ceiling. I only watch at night with all lights out, but still this projector is so bright and with a large screen it lights up the room pretty good. I can now see that a dedicated room with dark walls etc would help bring out the best in an image, at least black level/contrast wise. Its still pretty amazing though with some reflected light.

Wow! You guys must collect every film that comes out. I read reviews and sometimes even go to an actual theater. If I like what I read or what I saw at the movie, I might buy it for my collection. But at $20 a pop ($30 for 3D), I have to be far more selective.

You can buy Blu rays months after they come out for under $10.00. Just have to be patient and wait. Gravity is $7.99 on Amazon for example.

I own less than 30 movies because I only buy those that I give 10/10 and can watch over and over again.

Question. I just noticed something on my 5030 and im not sure if its normal or not. If your looking directly at the lens. The vents on to left side there is one area where light gets through. Seems like all the other vent groovs do not. Seems werid and nust wanted to see if others are the same or something is funky with mine.

Mine is exactly the same. I don't find it to be an issue at all.

I just finished cataloging my movies. 475. 1 is a DVD ( Team American ), 57 HD DVD's, and 417 Blu Rays. I guess you could say I like movies !

Anybody looking to get an Epson 5030 for themselves for Xmas, we have a couple in stock !!

Ok thanks. Just noticed it. Ive only has mine for a few weeks and took it down do to other messy work being done in the basement. Hooked it back up and saw that and got worried.

Quick question - is anyone experiencing slight rings in bright scenes? Watched The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey tonight (started the marathon to go see the final film Monday), and I noticed in bright scenes - like when they are being chased by orcs and Radagast is a decoy, there are faint rings across the image.

You can see the faint rings in the sky in this sample moving right to left...

If I mess with focus it goes away a bit, so basically just wondering if anyone has experienced it - or if the projector is defective?

That looks like a result of the screen door effect inherent in LCD projectors in my opinion.

I've never seen anything like that in over 1200 hours on my 5030. Nor could I tolerate it. What settings are you using and what is your screen? Is it an acoustically transparent screen by any chance?

This is a Mustang 1.0 gain screen - I know not the best, but never saw this with my old Sanyo Z2.

The 5030 has the latest firmware, is set to Super Resolution 2, Frame Interpolation Normal, and Fine.

If I switch to a playstation and have it in fast, no FI and Super Resolution off - I still see the same thing.

I would say that the PJ is possibly faulty then, sorry. Certainly in all of the hundreds of movies I have watched via my own 5030, I have never once seen anything like that. If you have the timecode for that scene, I would be happy to play it here and see if I see the same thing, but I am almost certain I haven't. I am fairly OCD about PQ and am sure I would have noticed it.

Try hanging a white sheet in front of the screen, and see if you still see the same effect. Some screen textures do not work well with some projectors, and the combination can create visible artifacts like you are seeing.

Thanks for being willing to check... This is at 1:20:35 or so in the extended edition of An Unexpected Journey. Any of the sky in that sequence does it for me.

@WestCDA - I'll give that a shot tonight. I hung a piece of printer paper in front of part of the scene and its hard to tell, but not sure I see it anymore. I'll get a sheet or poster board today and try again tonight.

I'd love it if it were just the screen texture - I really love this projector.

No problem. I will put that disc in before tonight's movie and check it for you. I will report back, but it will probably be tomorrow your time.

This was my first thought , actually. You've gone from the Sanyo Z2 (720p) to the 5030 (1080p). It's quite conceivable that the texture of the screen is being emphasized by the higher resolution. I've never seen anything like what you're experiencing on any of the LCD projectors I've ever owned.

Thought I'd mention that I received my $200 Visa card today-24 days after receiving the projector. That's the fastest by far that I've ever received any rebate!

For those that were helping me on my posts about the dark rings in my image... Well, I took a section of poster board and taped it up so it would drop into the frame so I could see the rings on the left, the poster board, and then to the right of it.

No rings on the poster board - so it's got to be my screens fabric. I really had no idea that could even be an issue, and was frankly super relieved to see it. Now I can deal with it until I replace the screen. I'll be re-reading this thread for recommendations - but seems like it might be time to find a nice one that makes the blacks even better!

Thanks to everyone that took time to walk me through this!

As long as I'm writing this - I bought mine at Best Buy on 11/23, they weren't offering the $200 card everyone was at the time and wouldn't match it for me (some folks on this thread did get it from them), but it was $2299 and seems to qualify for the lamp rebate (haven't gotten it yet), so I did it anyway. They are offering a $200 card now so I went in last week and told them I am elite plus, in the return window still - can they resolve it. They did an exchange transaction and gave me the $200 card. So if you bought from them you may want to try the same.

I couldn't be happier with the deal even before that...

I checked for you. I didn’t get the problem here. I would do what others have suggested and project temporarily onto a white bedsheet or a big piece of white card and see if the problem goes away. If it does your screen material is zizzing with the image and you need to change the screen. If it doesn't then unfortunately it seems that the PJ needs replacing or repairing. Good luck with it. Please let us know how you get on.

EDIT: Just read your post above. Glad it's not the PJ. Do you watch movies in a light-controlled (ie dark) room? What colors are your walls and ceiling? How far from the screen is your PJ? All those will need to be taken into account for screen recommendations.

I was able to watch in full the Guardians of Galaxy, live in 3D for the first time, with my sister yesterday. Wow, totally blown away and she was as well. It's one of the purchases that I don't feel any regret every penny

Now, I am researching what to buy for the storage of Samsung SSG-5150GB glasses. I like them for the price and decent quality (I love Epson's original glasses due to a little better video quality), yet I hate them for not being able to fold. Now, I struggle finding a good storage solution for them, after hours googling online. My options explored:
- A large microfiber pouch/bag, at least 8in x 8in x 2in, for each glass. I can't find squash online. Mostly small pouch for folded glasses like the Epson.
- 16-pair sunglass display counter rack (http://www.noveltiescompany.com/prod...d-by-the-piece). Coupled with this one, I will also buy an electric duster like Metro Vacuum ED500 ($55 on amazon), to dust off before each use.
- A closed container/cabinet. Nothing found. I might have to build a wooden cabinet myself.

My preference is the large pouch/bag solution. If not, i might have to go with 2nd option.

What are your solutions/ideas for your Samsung SSG-5150GB glasses? BTW, I have 13 Samsung SSG-5150GB glasses and 2 Epson glasses (the original ones that come with the 5030UB purchase).

I didn't know not being able to fold is this annoying!

Thanks,

Peter

I have a multi-drawer cabinet as an end table next to my seats and sofa. I put both the Samsung glasses and the Epson glasses in one of the drawers I have dedicated for that purpose. They are all lined up in the drawer nice and neat and I take out as many as needed with no trouble at all.

I returned from Walmart just a few minutes ago and tried to get both the new Captain America and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Because the Walmart I go to is in a hick, rural area I should have known they would have neither movie in 3D, only blu ray. I guess I will just have to wait to make a trip to the big city. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the Guardians in 3D, which I have heard is awesome.

Peter:

No worries. If you can find the LARGE 3M Command hooks, they work perfectly for these Samsung glasses. I put a bunch of them up above the rack that houses all of my BR discs in my equipment room. Might not be the greatest looking thing but it does the job! The glasses fit on the hooks nicely. As you can see in the photo, the glasses will stick out from the wall. If you have a closet or a wall that is out of sight in that room, it's a good solution.

As you can see, they also work for the glasses that came with my 5030 (but folded up).

Need help with sports. I have Dish, an Onkyo 3009, and 6030. When watching football with the camera panned out showing both teams, every player has a blur around them. When the camera is closeup, the picture is clear. Watching blu ray movies, regular TV, etc is perfect. I've tried a lot of different configurations. Dish outputs to 720p for example and/or FI at high, setting onkyo to 1080p, source, through, etc. Anyone else getting blur around players? I would imagine this holds true for hockey as well. Btw, I see the same thing via a ota module in my dish stb (722k) but a little better than broadcast. Suggestions?

Sounds like it's the source material if it's only certain shots. Not all of the cameras used on a sports broadcast are equal quality.

That's a cool idea! I will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

I am thinking of going to Walmart and check this out.

If you have a closet or a wall that is out of sight in that room, it's a good solution.

As you can see, they also work for the glasses that came with my 5030 (but folded up).
