Local shop has this on sale. Sounds like they opened the box and set it up to demo but it hasn't seen much use.

What do you all think?

Seegs108 09-21-2013 12:06 PM

If you want to support a local B&M store then I'd say go ahead with it, but you can get a b-stock or a refurbished unit (with full warranty) plus a new bulb for about $400 cheaper elsewhere.

Tangled Cable 09-21-2013 12:16 PM

Yes, I think you're right. I just checked ebay and several of these sold for 1300 to 1600 ... I would like to buy locally just to avoid shipping/fraud, etc, but doesn't look like that is such a good idea.

Where did you see ones with the spare bulbs you mentioned?

Seegs108 09-21-2013 12:21 PM

The ones on ebay almost always do not come with a warranty. So those prices should not be compared to the one you're getting from an actual dealer. The only ones I've seen with a warranty are the ones sold through JVC's Pro Store on ebay. They have sold refurbished units in the past for $1795 and a new bulb can be had a for a couple hundred dollars separately. AVScience (AVSForum's sister site) sells them for a great price too and should have them more readily available as the JVC ebay store only lists new ones on a monthly or bimonthly basis.

I don't think AVScience has any 45's in stock. They have a 46 for about $2500 I think that does not include shipping and I'm not sure if it comes with a spare bulb either ..

You'll need to give either Mike or Craig a call. They don't list everything on their website.

+1. Actually AVS' prices are even more competitive than the JVC Store which charges sales taxes. AVS only does that for NY.

Personally, I'd wait/save for a newer model to avoid any (potential) bulb issues with the previous two generations of JVCs. AVS has great pre-release sales prices for any new JVC in the fall or pick up a 2012-2103 model for a great price from an upgrader.

They weren't when I contacted them surprisingly... their comment was "Love it when they undercut their dealers"

So does this mean there is still an issue with short bulb life/high replacement costs for certain JVC projectors? JVC never got this squared away?

Is the RS48 affected by this?

There's been no reports of lamp failures from the current models (RS46/RS4810/RS56/RS66), if anything the reports have been positive on how well these lamps are behaving over time.

On the previous generation since the Rev 3 with the flapper was released, the reported complaints went down significantly, I can't recall the last time someone posted about a JVC lamp issue.

coderguy 09-24-2013 07:54 PM

My series 3 lamp has 55% to 60% loss at 350 hours or so. I'm about to replace it. At least the lamps are cheap.

Perhaps I was unlucky, because my experience was the opposite, 1500 hours out of Series 2, and only 500 out of Series 3 (if I get lucky). I think my Series 3 lamp is exhibiting the same symptoms before my Series 2 exploded, but who knows. My series 3 lamp has about the same brightness at 350 hours as my Series 2 did at 1300 hours.

Tangled Cable 09-25-2013 12:49 AM

So this sounds like two conflicting experiences as to lamp life? Coderguy, what JVC are you running?

mark haflich 09-25-2013 06:26 AM

No lamp is built or QCed so that 100% of them will meet specs and meet life expectancies. Getting an under performing one while not extremely likely can still happen and JVC should NOT be chided for this. If you experience a situation like Coderguy, I would contact JVC or your dealer. Going through your dealer who will know exactly the right person at JVC to call, you are likely to get some redress from JVC.

coderguy 09-25-2013 07:32 AM

I am using the RS-45, I haven't contacted JVC yet because waiting to see if lamp drops a bit more or pops. I have until November. I know JVC will want me to send in the projector, and I refuse, it's not the projector.

There really aren't that many people that have many hours on 03 series lamps, I asked a bunch of people how many hours on their 03 lamps, most didn't even hit 300 yet, so I am not sure how we know anything about 03 vs. 02 really. There are a couple that went over 500, but I don't think I've seen a single person go over 1000 yet. This isn't near enough data to say anything. When I see several people passing 1500 hours on the 03 lamps, then I'll be convinced it's fixed. I know of 6 people total that had issues thus far with the 03 lamps including myself, 3 of those are from another dealer (not AvS), 1 of them is me, and the other 2-3 are posters in this forum. I don't feel like digging up the posts, but they are there if you look for them.

I don't have any hard statistics, and there is some anecdotal evidence that the issue has improved, but there is just as much anecdotal evidence that the 03 lamps are still having problems as far as I am concerned. I think the most likely situation is that the 03 lamps helped redirect the airflow, so it reduced the chances of dimming early on, but I don't think it fixed it.

I mean if I had the reverse scenario (03 lamp make it to 1500 and 02 lamp go 500), then I could be proclaiming the issue is fixed, but I would be incorrect again, because it can go either way coincidentally. My 02 lamp was fine until about 800-1200 hours was the mass dimming, and 1500 was when it died. That doesn't mean the 03 is better if the 03 goes 1600 hours.

inconclusive if you ask me.

i do think this year's JVC's have better lamps though.

Tangled Cable 09-25-2013 09:17 AM

Coderguy, I assume your RS45 takes the same bulbs as the RS4800 which I'm considering buying?

How much do you pay to replace them?
