so it does exist..

this should be a nice update to the HW55. specifically the reality creation imo is much better on the 4K projectors than the HW50/55.

congrats on a new toy!

Am upgrading from the HW55ES. Hopefully be a decent upgrade.

Can I just ask!, as I am slightly confused.

All my movies are on external hard drives which is connected to my Htpc. I have the Htpc going to my adventage 1030 receiver, then to my darbee...... All these devices I have mentioned are HDMI.1.4..

Do I need to start upgrading them all to hdmi 2.0?

Is there a powerful graphics card for 4k gaming with Hdmi 2.0?

Am just really confused how having Hdmi 1.4 devices with 4k Hdmi 2.0 projector effects things????

Regards my Htpc... Should I enable or disable scaling from the Gc?

Is the reality creation different than my old HW55ES? Not seeing any upscaling option in the HW55 settings

I'm looking to buy one of these but there are two versions available from my dealer.

One is the projector plus a free FMP-X5 unit.
The other is the projector plus all of the official Sony demo content, which they say is over 30 different demos.

I would love to get the demo content, but would I be better off with the FMP-X5?

Also, can you mount this projector to a standard ceiling bracket?

I would get the FMP-X10 if I was going to buy a server. The server with the demo content is just that, demo content and will never be anything other than that. The X5 can at least download new movies that Sony provides. Neither of those units have much value, especially the demo server. The X10 unit can also download Sony content and will get you Netflix 4k and maybe more in the future.

Unfortunately all we are being offered in Europe is the X5 which only presently really offers Netflix 4k content - which in the UK is limited to House of Cards and Breaking Bad. It doesn't contain a hard drive and there is no current download option as with the X10. I keep hearing that it is rights issues which is preventing the X10 from being released in Europe and that Sony are working on it, but just how long is it going to take? It's been over a year since the X10 was released in the US. The X5 is really paltry fare by comparison and yet Sony are charging top dollar for it.

The 500 is cheaper in Japan than the 300 is in Europe.

That's pretty messed up.

I'm flying into Paris next week and it's cheaper to have a friend in Japan send me a VW500ES from there than to buy a VW300ES while I'm in Europe...crazy world economy.

Hope you don't have any warranty issues which could be problematic if purchased out of country. I have a Sony HW50ES that has to go into warranty for a second time with the same problem.

Yeah me too. But for the street price difference between a VW500ES and VW600ES I could almost just buy a second one if I had a problem (not that I could afford to do that). I'm just commenting that the different pricing for these projectors in different regions of the world is wack.

Yes, they get you with the warranty -- for sure.

That is a crazy price difference, and IMHO worth the risk. I have had about 10 different projectors over the years and only have had issues with my HW50ES. Projectors are complicated pieces of equipment, but most will not have problems. For the cost savings you could ship the projector back to the country of purchase for warranty service multiple times and still come out ahead. If the savings are more modest then having a warranty from your own region may be worth the added expense.

I wonder what sort of server you get with the demo content and if that server can be used for anything else?

The projector would shut itself off without warning, the frequency of which increased over time. The final time this happened the projector could not be restarted. This was accompanied by a repeating cycle of 6 flashes of the red standby button. Sony "repaired" the projector by replacing a fuse even though the issue had been explained to them. I had my doubts that the problem was fixed since I could not understand why the projector could be restarted if the problem was a fuse. I suspected that the fuse was the final symptom of a bigger problem. It turns out that I was right. A few months back the projector began shutting itself off periodically and then just over a week ago shut itself off for good. Now I will find out whether or not Sony will make good and either do a thorough overhaul of the projector, or if that is not possible, provide a replacement. If I get the projector back and all they did was replace the fuse, I will be pissed.

On my Htpc should I set it to 4k resolution when pkaying blurays, or 1080p and let the VW300 upscale?

I just read kraine's review and he subjectively prefers the VW300ES to VW500ES. Very interesting. I wonder, however, how much of that difference is due to the manufacturing date (SXRD panel improvements over the course of the last year?) and shipping firmware. Also, interesting that the lumens are virtually the same for the VW300ES in high lamp mode to the VW500ES in low lamp mode (while at the same time the VW300ES has slightly lower black level and better contrast). For my screen size, I think I'll need the extra lumens (especially in 3D) over the modest contrast and black level bump.

A bet a comparison of VW300ES vs VW500ES with the same manufacturing and firmware date might be much closer.

Regardless, the 265W vs 230W bulb is the only technical thing that bothers me about considering the VW300ES over the VW500ES, all the other stripped out features don't bother me a bit.
