I see many bought with housing. What's the difference between buying just the bulb vs buying with housing?

I have the RS500 which my wife and I have been enjoying immensely for the last 3 years. All this talk of latency for gaming has been amusing... a self satisfied "that doesn't apply to me, I'm not a gamer" attitude.

But I do fly radio control helis and planes. I do 3D stuff (YT it to see what that is). I finally bought a nice flight simulator for the Winter months. It's been fun, actually. I just tried it on the RS500. It's impossible... utterly impossible. There's no connection between the sticks and the aircraft. It just wallows all over. I can't even land without crashing. 3D stunts are out of the question. Even trying to hover a heli is impossible. I'm just chasing it all over field, finally crashing.

I tried it on the computer's monitor and problem solved. Everything is locked in perfectly again.

I see what the gamers were saying about this projector. It's impossible. I mean... really out of the question. You can't even fake it.

My wife was like, "Stop crashing so much. It's not a good habit to get into."

Now torn if I just leave it in full time or only break it out for special occasions while still using my old one for everyday movie watching.
How many hours on the old bulb?

This is the 2nd bulb I've bought from them. The bulb I replaced it with had 2700 hours and it worked perfect, as bright as the original when new but i'm going off memory. 2nd bulb is sitting in a box ready to go, the RS540 you sold me only has 100 hrs now.

If you are outputting 4K it reaches the projector as 4K.

Just pre-ordered Black Hawk Down but the current price deal might drop later. I think this will look great in 4K HDR as I don't recall with great shadows and detail last time I've seen it (could be on dvd?), which is crucial during the last chapters in the film...can't wait!

if you haven't seen it yet, high recommend for Salyut-7 - based on true events of a 1985 Soviet space station rescue. The cinematography, sound track and suspense were remarkable.

check out the ratings, available on amazon prime.

Didn't know they made a movie out of it...but thanks for recommending it, Jason - screenshots look Imax-worthy, will definitely check it out. did you get a chance to see it in the big screen?

Noticed both blu-ray 3D and 4K UHD are also available...I'll check out prime soon.

^Oops forgot that you do have your own Big Screen! duh

Took a peek in prime...superb quality even in 1080p. Btw lately i've been so impressed with Netflix and Prime upping their game in image quality. I rarely stream (my 4K ATV has been collecting dust over a year now) but noticed that their movie selections have greatly improved over the months and 4K UHD prime looks even better than some discs...yet, i still prefer discs cuz of the sound

What UHD player is everyone here using with their JVC now? I've got the Oppo 203, but losing hope that the tone-mapping issue will ever be fixed I'm starting to think about cashing it in and getting the Panasonic UB9000. Anyone who's used both with their JVC have a preference?

I'm using the UB820 now. Its tone mapping is much better than the Oppo.

I just got a UB820 and haven't done much with it yet (besides hooking it up). Any tips on what setup I should use to enable the tone mapping for my X750R projector?

1) JVC DLA-NX7 & Sony 65Z9D, Yamaha CX-A5200, Outlaw Audio 7900 & 7700, UDP-203, DP-UB9000, UBP-X800M2, Roku Ultra

Go to post 1420 in the UB820 thread and start there. I use the SDR/BT.2020 output, black tone at +2 or +3 (can't remember which) and white tone at -2 or -3. Generally, the Dynamic Range slider is at +2 (at least that's what I have on my notes). Next time I fire up the projector, I'll see what I've been running lately.

You have to be watching a UHD disc to turn the optimizer on. I was having trouble because the on/off toggle image was off the lower right of my scope screen and I couldn't see it. If you're using a 16:9 screen, no worries then.

After upgrading my HTPC with NVidia 1080ti card and "friendly" (after firmware change) optical BD-XL drive, I sold my OPPO 203 and am using the HTPC as my only source. MadVR UHD tone mapping has improved nicely and madsi is still working magic. Very happy with the results and everything including YouTube TV at 4K. I've even listed my Vertex for sale here and eBay since I don't use it any more either.

Good information here.

I have been using the same SDR/bt.2020 output, but didn't mess with any of the black and white tone settings. I have my Dynamic slider at +1.
Curious as to what benefit you saw with the adjustments on the black and white tone settings?
Thanks.

I recently purchased a Panasonic 820 to pair with my JVC X750R. I have the 820 set for HDR-SDR/BT.2020 and the optimizer is on, but I have all the sliders on "0" right now. I'll have to experiment with those adjustments when I have time, but even with all the sliders at "0", the picture looks great.

Better than OPPO and custom curves? Even for the included Netflix app?

I only used an Oppo 203 briefly and have never used custom curves. The tone mapping alone on the 203 was off, and I'm more of a set it and forget it person so the 820 works well for me. I'm an old guy that's mainly a disc spinner, so I can't comment on the Netflix app question. But others here should be able to chime in on that.

It's been months, but I remember it giving the picture a bit more depth.

Much better than Custom curves, because the Panasonic adapts based upon each individual disc. Much brighter picture. As for the Netflix app, I don't use it. I use a Roku with my custom curves. I had issues with the app when I first got the player getting it to output properly and haven't gone back to troubleshoot it.

Ya would be curious if Netflix looks “better” thank with ATV and custom curves. Assuming the Panasonic tone mapping is dynamic like the OPPO tried to do?

Not sure if the UB820 HDR Optimizer now works with streaming apps, but there seems to be other issues:

Well crap. Lol. I guess I am “stuck” with ATV with custom curves. I just wonder if the ATV use of DV converted to HDR is not giving me the best picture on my JVC.

Chad blindly updated my 2020 settings as well based on his other curves with my hopes Oppo finally did get it together, but may have to play with your numbers on op of it to see if that does any more for it.

Another thing I was wondering is if an HDfury device like the Linker or Vertex is still needed with the newer Panasonic models, or if it's pretty much good to go out of the box. Will probably be Feb now from what I gather, but wanted to get everything ready for it.

Bill Hunt from Digital Bits has this on their recent UHD release schedule:

Alien: 40th Anniversary Edition – TBA MAY 2019 – N4K
The Abyss: 30th Anniversary Edition – TBA 2019 – N4K

Folks have been waiting forever for the The Abyss release since it never came out on BD. I hope it's the extended release, that's the version that should have been in the theater on day 1. I remember seeing this in 1989 and people were gasping in audience when the water alien appeared. This was 2 years before the T2 liquid metal sfx.

I had the DVHS copy of Alien many years and it was excellent for the time period. The BD of this looks good but should be excellent if they do a proper scan/treatment. fingers crossed on both titles for 2019!

Agreed, it does look great even at default. The black and white tone controls (and luminance slider for that matter which I usually have at zero) are very set-up specific. I like the white tone to down bring down some of the overly bright speculars...this way I can get a more natural look to the image (for my taste anyway). I'm on the fence still for the black tone as I am currently not using it, but still need to test it out a little more. I know in some set-ups, the brightness control has been raised to +1 or +2 to show correct black levels...no opinion on this though.

Another good starting point is post 605 on page 21 of the same thread, where Kris pointed out a proper way for TM to work with your projector:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-b...l#post56673666

Basically, he says to do SDR2020 output from the player with your pj set @2.4 gamma w/BT2020 color profile, assuming it's well-calibrated...When player reads the disc metadata and applies the correct TM algo closest to their value you then adjust the dynamic range slider based on your pj's peak light output...Note this measure is important cuz it sets a good baseline in handling most discs.

If you read further into his posts he detailed out a way to correctly set the dynamic range adjustment slider by applying a multiplier to your peak white nit value...

I tried the 820, but for a few days only, to figure out an issue I was having earlier and recall my slider set from 0 to few clicks down to the left for best results. Were you getting around 70 nits on your display? That would be close to 350 nits with a 5x multiplier applied to it, which is equivalent to 0 default.

To be honest with you, I have no idea how to go about checking the "nits" on my display. I'm sure it would help to know about how to set the brightness level and I even purchased a light meter a couple years ago. But I'll have to be schooled how on to actually do this.
