It is amazing. I don't understand why they did not release a 4K UHD version.

I was watching the Toronto Raptors game last Saturday via Roku 4/YouTube TV; it might not be 4k but the JVC said it's displaying 4k (e-shift of course).

Lol. We have almost everything in Canada now. Prob 5 years behind though.....lol.

I think for those (like me) that mostly watch ATV (Netflix, iTunes, local TV app bell fibe) and rarely watch blurays (it ever) the tone mapping HDR to SDR within bt2020 is a feature we all wanted to see in OPPO as it accepted HDMI in. However given the arguably poor implementation of tone mapping we ATV users were forced to go back to custom curves. I am waiting for the Envy which sounds like exactly what I need to help my main source (ATV) with tone mapping. If the panny 820 had HDMI in then that’s where most of us would have gone.

Blasphemy! Repent!

I’m a sidenote, I am trying to reduce the amount of discs I buy but it is hard...

You're renting streaming content though, right? Not physical disc? I find it hard to accept that there are folks out there spending the time and money to assemble a near reference screening room and then passing on the best quality consumer format.

I am a heretic. An iconoclast.

That being said I would rent UHD disks (instead of streaming UHD Dolby vision + atmos via Apple) if it were as easy as renting blu rays.

Update: thanks for giving me grief guys. I decided to see if Redbox had expanded their 4K rentals to my city.....and they did, in March.

Freakin’ awesome. Assuming the selection and availability works there may be a Panny in my future soon!

(Is the 820 the cheapest version that can do the tone mapping?)

You won't regret it. And yeah, go for the 820. You can even split up the payment for no interest at Best Buy.

Our video displays are only as good as what we feed them. The player matters. The content "software" matters. There really is no substitute for physical disc (or rips to HTPC plus MadVR).

Finally, I'll simply note that there is a dearth of information about physical Blu and UHD releases in this thread and in the new RS thread. While I realize that too much discussion would be off-topic, there honestly seem to be easily rectified misunderstandings. I'm a decent resource for questions concerning image quality of certain Blu-ray releases and UHDs. I'm nowhere close to a videophile though. Sometimes, the basics go a long way.

He must be hitting your place before or after he stops by my house.
Although he was just here at the beginning of March(he did a fantastic job dialing in my 820), he is going to give the new ARC Genesis calibration a try on my AVM60.

I'm probably in the 1% minority: I have three Family Video stories within a five mile radius of me (with one just one mile down the road) and they have a very good selection of new release UHD BDs for $3.50 a night. I consider myself very fortunate.

Better value for me to buy, since the codes sell for several bucks. I can screen on or near release day and then watch again in a few weeks or screen for guests, etc.

It would be nice to rental option nearby though. There are titles that I will never buy, so it would be great to at least have a cheap option to rent. Netflix has disappointed.

I did post a few new pics back in Feb HERE but you may have missed it. I went with more of an old retro classic 40's look sans the CRAZY carpet I had to have (and I do agree with our convo last year when I was trying to convince you about the overhead Atmos speakers you eventually installed, that the overhead position I now have corrected (like yours), does indeed make a HUGE difference in the HWD interconnected fluidity of immersive sound... WOWee!).

Oh and a EDIT here cause I know you'll ask... Yes I'm using two SVS PC2000's as my Marvel & DC prop stands on the side of the velvet curtains!
Kevin, hi I did miss the update in February, the room looks great, very nice color scheme and decorations! great job!

Are you still catching any 3D titles? I've been on a 3D + ATMOS kick for a while. double dipping on a number of titles so I can grab the atmos track from the UHD's and remux then with the 3D video then bluray backups. One of my recent favorites was Spiderverse, the 3D was excellent throughout the entire movie.

Spoiler!

Normally I watched sports in my lowly BenQ (which I just sold) due to its brightness but noisy fan. With this JVC, I really enjoyed the NBA playoffs via Roku 4K/YouTube TV, as well as old movies, such as Harry and Tonto, Batman 1989, Black Hawk Down 1080p, etc. Concert such as the Eagles Farewell Tour and documentary like Apollo 11 were also outstanding to watch. Each time when the end credits started to roll up, the fade to black just took on a new high (what bright corners? guess I was fortunate). Fast 8 in 4k Ultra HDR was lent to me; it's quite a treat, as well as Oblivion.

I returned the Sony x800 back to BB (after BR 2049 crashed it) and wait for the Panny 820 coming later this week to play with its tone mapping feature.

The only downside is HDMI synching, taking too long comparing to my 2k RS45.
it's good to hear it's working out well so far. The UB820 will be a great addition with UHD discs. I haven't seen Batman 1989 mentioned in a long time. so I did a quick look and it turns out they are releasing it in UHD on June 4th. It has a new 4K scan + updated ATMOS track.

Bill Hunt just reviewed it and gave it high fives so I'm going to grab this one next week and check it out. thanks for bringing it up

Just Auto; did not see 4k. Thanks.

Based on the "howtogeek" page, mine just displays "Auto", not "Auto (Up to Ultra 4K HD)". My Yamaha/Sony x800/RS500 has no issue playing some of the Ultra 4k disks, nor my Zidoo 4k box.

There is some discussion on the topic below. Have you tried on the Firestick on the same input on the Yamaha as the Sony and Zidoo? Maybe one of the inputs isn't 2.2 compatible. Also the latest OS update?

Ahem. I guess that I did not set up the Fire Stick to check for update, so it's being updated now. I'll play with it in the morning. BTW, the Yamaha has the latest firmware update last week when I had the Sony.

I also had a Roku 4k HDR that the JVC identified as 4k input, like my Zidoo box.
