13 Hours 4K looks and sounds incredible. PQ/AQ easy 10/10.

I also forget how good the movie itself is. Truly excellent. I really put this up there with the very best of them. 9/10.

When Bay is locked in he is pure fire.

I would look at the HDfury.com website. They have a bunch of options (a little more expensive but they work well -- I have owned an Integral).

Thanks for the advice,I use a Vertex in my Theater Room. I have to get a new receiver, the Yamaha I have does 4K but no HDR,so the next one I'll buy should be just fine. I wasn't looking for a new receiver because it's just our den/TV room so I was trying to make it work like it was, time for a new receiver.

Thanks.

Only so much as using a 12v trigger wire from the RS500 to the A2 powered slide to move in & out of the light path (as below); else if yours is fixed then only switching to 16:9 is an option on the JVC.

Hey I'm getting up to speed with my RS500 and MadVR. I've got the basic settings down and am working on setting up dynamic tone mapping. Is there a primary thread on avs that covers that? Thanks for any help.

How did you, and perhaps @krichter1 , reach @chadb ? I’d like to have him set my RS500 up to do it’s best.

I just bought a Panasonic DP-UB820 today and rushed home to set it up. I promptly played a 4K UHD (John Wick2) movie and was very pleased with the image quality projected by my RS500.

@chadb is not currently scheduled to be in Michigan, but I’ve put myself on his wait list.

The isoldit eBay seller we bought from has another listing now with 3 available. Not as good a price as we got last time but maybe worth putting a watch on the listing in case he reduces the price further.

There is another listing for a used lamp. This seller says it "was used for testing but was never used" whatever that means. And no original packaging. But someone wrote "550 H" on the lamp which likely means it has 550 hours on it.

Anyone else noticing a "softness" to the SDR2020 picture (over the quite excellent HDR setting after Chad's custom curve... Wow!)??

I'm close to pulling the Oppo 203 out of my rack but one pet peave I have on the UB820 is the OSD's being cutoff when running a 240:1 AR lens. Anyone know of a way like the Oppo to change the OSD positioning?

Lastly the other thing I found a bit odd (surprising), was no screen size selection for 3D (I thought this was a needed spec to properly set the parallax depth?)?

I’m pretty certain that the UB820 provides the means to adjust the menu’s screen location. I can’t walk you through it, but it’s in there.

I noticed this too and was also concerned. After scouring manuals from several sony players which have this feature, I finally found an answer in the Oppo 203 manual. In addition to everything else they do so well, Oppo is also the only CE manufacturer that can write clearly.

I'm paraphrasing, but the manual said this is not required to set, as it may not have any effect, but that some 3D discs may be able to use this setting. It sounded like the disc would need to be encoded with multiple parallax options.

In my search I noticed that one of the newest Sony 3D players has dropped this feature. My guess is that so few discs use it that it's being phased out.

I'm sure Zombie knows more.

Yes...I had to wait for all orders to be processed before JVC would sell me one. I was fine with that...all of the customers come first! So far I'm impressed with the projector, although I haven't done any critical viewing yet.

I would also love to hear your thoughts on moving up to the RS2000.

I've been enjoying an RS500 for years. Seating is 15ft from a 133", 16:9, 1.0 gain screen. My second lamp has about 500 hours on low, iris at -6, Auto 2.

No calibration, but I'm pleased with the "generic" settings from Projector Reviews' suggestions for their particular RS600.

The star field in Gravity is stunning when Sandra spins off into space, and so are the sun's highlights reflecting off earth.

Blade Runner 2049 via the Panasonic UB820 was a revelation in terms of detail, shadows, highlights, and colors (and I don't even have the BT.2020 update from a few years back!).

The $1 million question is whether the RS2000 is a "big enough" upgrade. I'm on the fence now that two fellow RS500/600 owners and projector Jedis diverge: Manni says yes, but Zombie10k says no (for their particular situations).

Going from the RS55 to the RS500 was huge, but it might be time to wait out this round.

The RS55 -> RS500/600 was definitely a huge upgrade. double the lumen output + full 18GB bandwidth to support 4K/60 + much better lamps. Autocal to correct gamma, etc. Add the UB820 (or better yet, MadVR) and it still looks amazing in mid 2019.

The new models are similar light output as the 500/600 and the ATM is similar to the UB820 but has the advantage of working with non disc sources like the streaming apps. faster sync times, etc. I'm not a fan of the new DI but that's just my personal preference. I would like to see JVC add a 3rd option that is more similar to what we have the 500/600 - the ability to really clamp down in low APL scenes.

If something happens to my RS600 I would get the RS2000 again but I think the next 'huge' upgrade will come in 1.5 years, cedia 2020 with a laser in this chassis + the dimming algos that are years in the making. If they can do this for 10K that will be exciting.

in the meantime, at least wait till after Cedia this year, they will likely go on pre-order price again and a few more months of firmware updates. hopefully the yellowing DI thing gets fully solved by then.

Thanks for all the good info over the years! I've directed several friends and family members to the mini-shootout thread, and shared a few experiences myself.

This is a crazy hobby, with so many good memories, like installing my first projector, the InFocus X1, and watching Lord of the Rings with a huge smile. These were the specs that fired me up and everyone who came to visit:

  • 1,000 ANSI lumens
  • 2,000:1 contrast ratio
  • 800 x 600 SVGA resolution
  • 6.8 pounds

I still love to ride with the Fellowship, and that hasn't changed.

However, Peter Jackson better be working on a 4K/3D/Atmos version. (Wait, I can't believe I just wished for *another* version of these movies after we put his children through college along with everyone else's at Weta and New Line Cinema

Somewhere between reading about the direct in-person comparisons several guys on here have done, reading about the yellowing DI issue and such and finally being able to be completely satisfied with my 4K disc image due to the glorious UB820 with these settings I have completely lost the upgrade itch.

Clearly the HDR standard wasn’t up to snuff as most manufacturers are implementing some form of tone-mapping now to correct the image. After years of frustration with “HDR” the UB820 finally gave me what I expected out of the box.

Clearly the HDR standard wasn’t up to snuff as most manufacturers are implementing some form of tone-mapping now to correct the image. After years of frustration with “HDR” the UB820 finally gave me what I expected out of the box.
For clarification purposes only, HDR TV Type is not used when in SDR/BT2020 output mode. It is only used by the HDR Optimizer when in HDR output mode.

We'll see how long JVC hangs onto the old lamp tech, even LED would be a nice improvement. The problem is I think the price is going to be factored into all this, so those of us in the sub-$7k category might be waiting forever. Best deal is used JVC right now, with NX series being second best deal.

Maybe in 2020-2021 this will get more competitive, but I think unless Epson releases a Native 4k LCD panel, JVC isn't getting all that much competition from Sony given Sony's US pricing and past historical issues.

Yep that is correct. My instructions only include it for completest sake. Allowing people to switch back and forth to HDR without having to mention it.

Is JVC ok with selling 10% pic the units they're used to selling?

The $7K+ projector crowd is tiny. I could swing it, but never would I spend $15K for a projector that looks 5% or less better.
