Did you double-click in the Gamma field, as per the autocal instructions?

Ahem. Looks like I'm Importing from my PC to the JVC, not Export. Am I right? Also, am I overwriting Custom 1, 2, 3, etc.?

If you Import a gamma curve then you will overwrite the previous Custom 1, 2, or 3. However, they were not used for anything useful until you create/import a custom curve.

Very slow and getting senile here but thanks for the tips. I was able to IMPORT (not export) a Gamma jgd file.

Based on what you said, the curve worked together with the gamma file, not independent. FYI, I do not have Spyder software.

OK. What are the file extensions of the custom curve? Thanks.

The JVC gamma files have .jgd file extension.

To "export" a curve you simply do a Save from the Gamma screen.

I’m currently using the NX7. Although it has the best black level for a true 4K projector, the black level is not as good as the 790. I’m pretty sure I’ll be upgrading it again year after year until I’m happy with the black level.

Alita UHD + 3D

We watched Alita tonight on the RS600 first in 3D then a 2nd round in UHD. The 3D effort was remarkable, A++!! It's great they included it in the UHD release. The UHD version looks amazing as well but the 3D was more fun.

The LFE in the ATMOS track hit's the 18's hard, check out the graphs in the bass thread below:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-s...l#post58298044

The 3D version only has DTS-HD. quick extraction of the ATMOS track from the UHD produces the best release of the movie, 3D + ATMOS

high recommend to check out the movie!!

The 3D in Alita is quite excellent. I still don't have a UHD drive to extract Atmos from 4K discs so I'm stuck on titles that also shaft the HD Blu-ray (like Homecoming, Alita, etc). I have been able to make 3D + Atmos rips of all my WB titles.

The movie of Alita itself is quite the mixed bag. It feels too fast and too slow at the same time. The movie somehow manages to simultaneously provide too much and yet not enough. It also ends on a cliffhanger so if it doesn't get a sequel that actually has an ending I'll be quite disappointed.

The 3D/4K combo made the purchase a no-brainer.

That isn’t a spoiler at all. Wouldn’t you want to know a movie you might watch with uncertain sequel status doesn't really have a conclusion? I didn’t tell you anything at all about the actual plot, characters or anything else.

No! I want to watch the movie and find out for myself. Had you a said, I wasn’t too thrilled with ending, that would have been different.

I watched the move last night with some others and we all really enjoyed it. I do hope that they do a sequel, but if they don't it won't affect my enjoyment of the movie itself. Stuff like doesn't really bother me.

I saw Alita offered while I was scoping out places to buy Captain Marvel 3D. Sounds like I really need to give it a whirl!

JVC RS500, Denon 7200WA, 7.2.4 Atmos/DTSX dedicated Theater. 133" Dalite 1.3 screen. M&K S150 + K7 ear level, 4 Tannoy DC overheads.

What Gamma do you all use?

For regular HD/Rec709 content I’ve been using: Gamma Normal
For 4K/SDR2020 content I’ve been using: Gamma 2.4
For HDR content I’ve been using: JAVSV3

What I wasn’t real sure about is the HD/Rec709 stuff. Are you guys using Gamma Normal or something else?

How do you know what and when to use different Gammas?

Calibrated by Chad B: I use bt.1886 for rec 709 and 2.4 for UHD (since that is the output of the Panasonic 820 with SDR2020). I think bt.1886 looks excellent on the JVCs for rec 709.

Where does BT.1886 come from...I don’t think my projector has that.

The projector doesn’t come with it. You can get close to it by selecting gamma 2.3 (or 2.4), and bump up the Dark Level control a few notches.

Obvious next question...where can I get it? Is it on this site somewhere?

Also, what is gamma normal equal to?

You cannot “get” it from anyone else, as it is not a fixed curve like others. The shape varies depending your black level, so it needs to be customized for each situation.

However, as mentioned in my previous post, you can get an approximation of it without using meters.

“Dark levels”? Are you referring to the black level ie. “Brightness”

Thanks,

No, there are three controls for fine-tuning gamma, called Dark Level, Bright Level, Picture Tone.

Do not touch Brightness for this adjustment.
