MPC is a personal pref one of which I've been dealing/playing with for over 6 years now (in one way, shape or another over the diff versions since the RS50), and prefer the default settings (5's across the board per my hours of P.Analyzer study w/ my gear). Just like eShift it's a matter of taste.

If anything in regards to smearing I would look more to what his CMD settings are along with how his outputs are setup between YUV & RGB conversions etc...

Settle down mate.

He mentioned it looked like they had excessive caked on makeup, sounds like Enhance was up too high to me as thats what I see when I bump it up more than it should be.

Good and bad.

The Good:
I watched the 2 Star Trek UHD movies in succession. HDR with high lamp and Auto Iris at -5.

HDR was more obvious in the first with all the bright white light explosions and the whites of the bridge. In the second HDR was more subtle. The longer I watched the more I started to notice.

I don't have an Atmos capable system but the True HD 7.1 audio on Into Darkness was pretty amazing. I can only imagine what it might sound like in Atmos.

The Bad: The lamp in my RS500 may have died at 5 minutes before the end of Into Darkness. I first thought it was a HDMI cable dropout. But then I noticed the red Standby button flashing and amber Lamp button flashing. Shut off the Samsung player and shortly after I heard the fan slow down. The Standby button eventually stopped flashing. Now I have the Warning light and Standby light with the Lamp light flashing still. Not sure if I should pull the power plug or just let it cool down a bit first.

I had 481 hours on the lamp before tonight's session.

I haven't put on Ghostbusters 2 yet but I watch Ghostbusters for about 10 mins last night after doing another test pattern level check on the Panasonic. My thoughts are it looked very much like a lot of the older 4K remasters on the Sony X10 player, very grainy, nothing particularly redeeming about the PQ at all. No smearing in the small part of Gb1 I saw though. I'll try to take a look at 2 at some stage as well. Looking forward to the 2 Star Trek discs and Independence Day though when the arrive from Amazon.

ID4 and the imax space discs arrived today...but wasnt brave enough to order the star trek duo... I shudder to think what they will sell for locally as well ...they are must buys for me though...so perhaps with some others might be doing a bulk buy when these drop back to sane prices !

Folks seem to be walking into local Walmarts and picking up Star Trek for $29 and change.

no enhancement was on...it had to do with the gamma with SDR UHD...but actually I prefer the image without the Integral HD fury...and HDR...no smearing at all....so I am selling the HDfury if anyone wants it

We could chalk up anything here to "matter of taste", but it would be helpful to make the distinction between those looking to artificially enhance source material versus those aiming to get ever closer to an authentic presentation of the source material. Which general approach is better isn't a worthwhile debate, but it would be helpful for members to appreciate the distinction. Fortunately, there isn't near uniform groupthink for image quality as there is, sadly, in home theater for audio.

Those looking for the Trek UHD discs should look at Barnes and Noble .com. They have them for around $28 each but also have a 20% code right now and free shipping. So you get them for just over $40 shipped.

I unplugged the RS500 from power this morning. When I started it back up the green light appeared, but then eventually the amber lamp warning light returned. So it appears to me that I have a dead lamp.

Wow. This is why spare lamps are essential and why I've felt that JVC should have included a spare with RS500/600. Hopefully, the warranty will cover you. Do follow up. I haven't checked the hours on my RS600- will have to consult the manual.

Keep in mind, this is the first failure that I have read about, out of probably 500 plus JVC owners that have purchased from us and others that post on the forum. Not a bad failure rate. It does suck when you are that 1 out of 500 plus.

I too watched GBII last night using the Integral in SDR mode (EDID 10), and found NO smearing whatsoever (spent most of my time looking for it rather than enjoying such a cheeeezy movie! )

This is one case where SDR looked better IMO than HDR (I feel like the grain kept in both I & II were sooo exacerbated in HDR it made it virtually unwatchable). I will say the only small benefit I saw were during the Proton Pak scenes (don't forget… never cross your streams!), which looked great.

Thx for the feedback against the Min4K versions Oz (which I own and will review and if basically the same might consider selling the 4K's… does anyone know i the Min4K also had the upgraded ATMOS track (which really made a diff IMO)?).

I think some older movies won't look better with HDR. Watched The Revenant last night with a friend who hadn't seen it yet. That film really does look outstanding in 4K and HDR. The color looks amazing !

I'm having a hard time considering picking up those Star Trek UHD disks. Mainly because I like the 3D BD presentations of these newer movies. basically if the movie was released in 3D, I find myself (and guests) more impressed with the 3D versions vs. the gains from 2D UHD. It's a shame they left out 3D from the UHD spec.

Anyone have a direct link? I search on B&N.com and can't find any UHD Blu-ray discs.

I can see that. Since I don't watch any 3D, it's an easier decision for me. Having to buy both the 3D and 4K versions could get spendy. They need a 3D / 4K " Super Pack " version !

I'd expect all films to look better in 4K assuming the source is good and the process is well executed. I don't understand how HDR fits into it. Hopefully, we'll get a digital result which is as close to the source as possible. Hopefully, there won't be an effort to add artificial "pop" which was never there to begin with!

That's what bothers me about these catalog offerings with HDR. At minimum, the filmmaker(s) should be involved if they are going to HDR them but I heard nothing of the sort for these three (GB I &II and ID4). Otherwise, they should just release them with SDR and 2020.

I know you're still draggin' ars on pulling the Denon immersive plug but I'm mostly buying for the excellent/gushing review Ralph gave these new ATMOS soundtracks (even Ghostbusters sounded good and like I replied to you last week… the version of The Wall in ATMOS was just awesome at reference level!… well until the neighbors called to cops on me!

I bet those movies will just destroy my room (why not destroy my corneas too!).

When the warning lights come on, what happens if you turn the pj off, wait for the cool down period, and then turn it back on. By any chance does the pic then come up?

I had the problem that when I turned my RS600 on each day the green light first appeared, but then either the pic never came up or the pj turned off automatically with the warning lights flashing. When I turned the power off, waited for cool down, and then turned it back on, the pic came up! This went on for weeks, and I finally sent it in for repair, and it has performed perfectly since getting it back. (It wasn't the lamp, but some 'board' that was replaced.)

I posted that I tried this earlier this morning. The warning indicator was still on from the previous night. Lamp indicator was flashing. Standby indicator was on. I unplugged the projector from power. When I reestablished power, only the Standby indicator was on. I turned the projector on. Indicator went to Green, but no light from lamp and eventually the Lamp indicator went back to flashing and the Warning indicator also came on.
