Depending on how you play back the rip, it may not have placed the projector in the HDR mode.

Maybe that's it. Chad was surprised that the HDR didn't look like he expected but since I was playing a downloaded rip he thought maybe it was the file. I am playing the file on an Nvidia Shield via Kodi.

EDIT: Although I think Chad would have noticed that. But maybe he missed it.

The INFO page on menu tells you if the projector is receiving a HDR signal:

I'll have to check when I get home what it is showing. IIRC now, Chad said it wasn't auto-detecting HDR and you had to manually enable it but I will have to confirm that. Back to my question, should there be an obvious difference between Blu-Ray and UHD on the JVC RS400? Is it something that's noticeable throughout most or all of a movie or only specific scenes?

Sometimes the difference is subtle ( in general - not just talking about the RS400 ). In the case of " Oblivion " the Blu-ray actually looks better. I like to read these reviews to get an idea of the difference of Blu-rays vs the 4K version -

Is a 138" 2.35 screen recommended for this projector or should I drop size?

My screen is 136" 2.35:1 and I think its fine. Some claim you need a smaller screen for extra lumens to help out with HDR but I've zoomed all the way in on my screen to make the smallest image I could (about 80") and while it was a bit brighter wasn't at all worth the trade off. For HD & 3D, the RS400 is more than capable on a screen that size and I think its just fine for HDR, too.

The benefits are HDR and WCG more than resolution with 4k, though I have not seen native 4k, but that's the word on the street.

I'd suggest discussing this with Chad. You should be doing well with the 400 and his calibration.

Edit: make sure you're not on Gamma D instead of a gamma curve that Chad may have loaded. The 400 will default to Gamma D upon a new HDMI handshake, and Gamma D sucks (that's tech talk ).
How does one contact Chad about scheduling a calibration?

Been running into an irritating issue with my RS400. I use DirecTV and I have their latest gear that lets you watch 4k on demand (and a few free shows). All of my content is routed through my Denon AVR-S720W, and enters the projector on Input 1. HD works flawlessly from a variety of sources, and 4K from DirecTV works fine. The issue is when I switch from watching 4K to an HD source. The screen just turns blue, displays the current input number, but no content. The only fix I've found is to manually switch to input 2, then switch back to input 1. I assume this is some sort of handshake error, but was wondering if this was normal/expected, or if there was a fix.

Mine behaves the same way. Sometimes even switching inputs doesn't work and I have to turn the projector off and back on to re-sync.

Future MRX 1120 has a few basic questions

Good morning!

This weekend I decided to take the plunge and purchased a MRX 1120, which should be arriving later this week. I am upgrading from a Marantz SR7011 receiver.

In preparation for delivery and the install, I have a few basic questions. Any help will be appreciated.

1) I have a Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 speaker config, where the ".4" speakers are all in the ceiling. With my Marantz reciever, there was a distinction between "Height" and "Top" speakers. In the documentation I have read so far Anthem only refers to these speakers as "Height". Any real issues here?
2) I want to use the remaining 2 channels of amplification as Zone 2. In looking at the speakers posts on the back of the receiver, I guess I will use the speakers posts labelled "Back L and Back R"?
3) It appears I need to measure the physical distance of each of my 9 speakers to my primary listening position before I run ARC?
4) I plan to use DTS Play both in my primary listening room, as well as Zone 2 and other rooms in the home. Any issues with doing this?

Thanks much for any help and guidance you can give me.

Regards,
Brian

If you are talking about 4K with HDR, unfortunately defaults to gamma D and you must switch your desired gamma each time it syncs to a source. 1080P and below sources will use the last gamma you chose. I believe one of the HD Fury products can stop that issue.

JVC X550 issue

Hoping someone can help

For the past few months, when I changed inputs for example from my Tivo receiver to an XboxOne, or AppleTV to PS4 etc.. my projector goes whacky and I have to cycle the power to get it functioning again.

This happens about once or twice a week and can't be replicated when I'm on the phone with JVC tech support

Just wondering if anyone has encountered this

Here's the list of equipment I'm running;

JVC x550
Yamaha RX-A2060 receiver
Monster Power "Stage 2 Filtering" rack with only projector plugged in (added about 3 weeks ago to see if it would resolve my problem and it hasn't) - Prior to this it was plugged into an APC Power bar
AppleTV 4k
Nvidia Shield
XboxOne S
PS4 Pro
TiVO 4k receiver
135" EluneVision Reference Studio 4K
Sony UBP-X800 BR Player
APC SmartUPS 1500VA (all equipment except for projector going thru this APC)

Here's a video of what happens after changing inputs;

Firmware on projector is up to date (u83.2),,,,, Bulb is new (it used to do this prior to bulb replacement, bulb was replace about a month ago)

Thanks!

Just FYI my RS400 does the same thing when switching inputs. Not all the time, but frequent enough to be annoying.

I forgot to add my Roku 'Ultra' 4k to my devices (and for some reason seems to be the one device that causes this issue more than the others)

There is a fairly definite bug where the JVC Projectors will lose sync like this with many Roku's, *if* CMD is enabled on the projector. If you have CMD turned on, turn it off for the purpose of determining if this is responsible for what you're experiencing.

I don’t think this is specific to the Rokus because mine did the same with my Philips player and only with my Philips player. He is correct about turning CMD off. I turned it off and so far haven’t seen this problem again.

Interesting. Which Philips player? I have the BDP7501, and have never had this happen with it. In my case, only my Roku Premiere+ has triggered it, but it wouldn't surprise me of other devices would create the same problem.

Yeah, same one as yours. Really annoying to have to shut the projector off and on again. It’s weird that nothing else will get rid of it.

Can anyone explain in detail if adding HD Fury linker to my setup how it benefits HDR.....I've done some custom gamma curves but looking to see if the Linker worth the investment.

Hello,

probably asked before and sorry for this.

I haven't made any fw update until now but today i plan to do.

I'd like to ask, is it ok to continue directly with 83.2.4 without making a 83.2 fw update?

Hi. I too am going to ask a question that has probably been answered many times before in this thread, but here goes.

I purchased the X550 in the spring of 2016. I spent quite a bit of time several months after that downloading software, color profiles, the whole nine yards. Since that I have watched 1080p sources on the projector and they have been excellent.

Early this year I purchased both a LG 4K OLED television, as well as an OPPO UHD player. I kind of made the decision that for the 4K movies I was going to watch it would be on the LG. I have 5 current 4K movies, and each of them activate HDR on the TV when played. I decided a few weeks ago to start using the JVC for these 4K movies. When I watch I noticed two immediate things: I saw no evidence that HDR was enabled, and the picture overall was noticeably darker than when displayed on the LG.

My guess is that either:
1) HDR is not fully supported on the X550, at least the type of HDR these 4K movies have
2) HDR is supported but the JVC is not detecting it
3) HDR is being detected however I either don't have the proper color profiles loaded, or something else is wrong.

Please that non-HDR 4K sources streaming from Netflix in look amazing, every bit as good as my LG displays them.

What is happening here?

Thanks much,
Brian
