So Im looking at a used rs420, no warrenty left 1100 hours. Im ready to pull the trigger but the no warranty scares me a little bit. Id be stupid if I atleast didnt ask in this thread if there is any reason to be scared to buy a rs420 with no warrenty. I buy used cars all the time, used everything, no warranty, but projectors are a bit different since I cant work on them myself.

I want 10+ years out of it, preferable only replacing light bulbs. It will be ceiling mounted in my house with just me living there for now.

This one is perfectly in my budget so no worries there. Any help would be good.

I was in your exact same situation. I had seen the loveliness that is the JVC contrast at a buddy's house and knew that I wanted that for my next projector upgrade. The MSRP for the lowest end JVC LCOS projector was just too much for me so I started investigating what it would take for me to get one. I contacted Mike at AVS and set my sights on a RS400 b-stock but even that was really more than I wanted to spend but I just started saving my pennies anyway. In the meantime I subscribed to the projector classifieds here on the forum and just waited. I came across an RS400 for sale in the classifieds at less than 50% of MSRP and pounced on it. I had a great experience with the purchase and was thrilled for four months or so. I then started having issues where I was getting error messages and the lamp would not light even though it was still good. I found some mentions in the threads about others having a similar problem and thought I was hosed as the warranty had just expired. (FYI - JVC specifically states that the warranty is NOT transferrable so any repair work as a second owner would require some close cooperation with the original owner to get it done). I was just about to contact Mendtronix (who JVC uses for warranty repairs) to find out about how much an outside warranty repair would cost and resigned myself to the fact that I was likely going to be out an additional $1000 at least. I took solace in the fact that even if I had to pay it I was still paying a little less than if I had bought the b-stock. I then came across a post where Mike at AVS suggested to one of the other members who was suffering the same situation to try fully unseating the lamp and then reseating it. I did that and have not had any further problems for the last 9 months! I have put on about 1000 hours on mine and it seems to be working fine. I paid ChadB to calibrate it and even with his fees I am still way ahead over paying for a new one. I took the risk, had a scare that I was prepared to pay for and have come out ok at a price I am comfortable with. These things are beautiful complicated machines that are built very well but still have the potential for an expensive fix. If you spend anytime reading the $3000 and under forums you will run into plenty of people who buy new and still have all kinds of problems but they never have the experience of watching their favorite films on a JVC. Good luck with your decision!

Is the seller original owner and do they have receipt. If so may be a chance able purchase a warranty from a dealer if had original receipt

Thanks for the reply.

The seller says they are origin owner, I haven't asked for a receipt. The rs420 had a 2yr warranty and its expired. Not sure they would do a extended warranty.

I would give Cleveland plasma a call or send them a pm. They may be able to work with you on a warranty especially if unit was bought from him! They seem very friendly and helpful from my experience in any questions I've asked them

@trilkb, you could try something like this:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/252-f...20-1800-a.html
I bet you might find a few more in the upcoming months with the release of the newer JVC projectors.
I do have an RS420 and love it. Patience may pay off if you can wait a bit longer.

NICE! You should enjoy that for sure. Looks like you have a great viewing room for your new JVC. Looks like you are going with the Sony X800 for 4K discs? PM me when you get ready to hang, as have some basic set up suggestions? Have fun and enjoy.

Thanks, I am hoping the mount I have will work but being a high end projector who knows. I used longer bolts to screw into a joist and I could literally hang on it and im 220lbs. So its just a matter of the mount working with the jvc.

Yes, sony ubpx800 will be used, going straight from it to projector.

My room is apparently the JVC's natural habitat.

Just a thought to consider, in case you're not aware of the potential complexities of getting good HDR performance on your JVC. You'll need to either upload or design custom curves to handle HDR from the X800. Another approach is to go with the Panasonic UB-820, which has its own tone-mapping, and is generally considered to given excellent results with HDR, as good as, if not superior to, custom curves. The Panny is not good for streaming media files other than UHD Discs, and the Apps leave something to be desired in terms of quality and quantity, but for Discs, there doesn't seem to be anything better for HDR.

Interesting. Highly unlikely ill be spending 500 on a new 4k player when I just got the sony, so hopefully some curves will work. Next purchase would be to rebuild my screen, or build a new screen, to a 16:9 so I dont have to worry about the movies that switch between 2.35 and 16:9 lol.

Do you need internet connection to upload these curves? Im kind of an odd one, I dont have internet or a computer at home anymore. I dont stream anything. Everything is discs. I do have a laptop that I can connect to my Inuke6000dsp but thats all its used for.

The curves will do a decent job for you, and I do understand the cost issues here. But there is a learning curve on how to connect and upload the curves. This is well documented in a variety of threads, and I believe Dreamliner has an excellent guide and summary, linked to in his signature. Do a search, and you should be able to find that.

You do not need an internet connection to do the uploading, but will need to connect your Laptop to the JVC with Ethernet. That, and everything else you'll need to know, is explained in that guide.

Can someone with this projector throw in avengers infinity war and do a test for me?

After the opening marvel screen the next scene is dark and a ship emerges from it. In the lower right hand corner do you get something that looks like static inside of the black shadows? Like the pixels are dancing around?

@trilkb, I will try this tonight when I get home. Did you try a different picture setting in the JVC to see if this was duplicated on the disc? Just a thought. Also you used the 4K UHD and Sony X800, correct?

Yes I used the bluray Avengers Infinity war disc on the sony ubpx800 set to 4k.

Theres more behind why im asking to do this test. My sony was having huge issues with this. I switched HDMI cables, I switched from my ubpx800 to a oppo bdp83, I bypassed my receiver. I figured the projector was just shot which was the reason behind purchasing the rs420. So I got the rs420 hooked up last night, threw it in and ran the scene and got better results but still some issues. Looking through I saw the brightness on the rs420 was set at +6 (I used the settings for SDR that you gave me @lizrussspike ), Caught that it was +6 and put to 0, reran the scene and better yet but I still see some stuff there.

My only other thought is my center stage UF screen on my false wall does not have any backing to it. The speakers are a few inches behind it, all black, then black sheets behind the speakers. But maybe I need to put 91/9 cotton/spandex material directly behind the screen to soak up colors and it might help blacks. I installed it tilted to the frame so shouldnt get moire.

I will test tonight using a Infinty wars 4k disc my bro-inlaw is bringing over and see what happens.

Other then that the picture looks good, Id say its a big upgrade from the sony as far as blacks and brightness.

@trilkb , I tried that scene and did not get any static in the lower right of the shadows as the ship comes into view.

Thanks. I watched it in 4k and I didnt get the static. The bluray does it but not 4k.

Spent 30 bucks on 9 yards of the black cotton/spandex and stuff is looking better. Took my Sony to my in laws house and it looked fine. So I may have purchased a new projector that I dont even need.

4k looked great! Just preordered mission impossible fallout in 4k. Can't wait! I never saw it in theaters.

That was a great viewing @trilkb. I watched Fallout on VUDU, and thought it looked great. Should be even better when the 4K disc arrives. You are in for a treat, and the audio is excellent as well!

No, there are 2 parts of the movie that take it from 2.35:1 to 16:9. Like how tron flips back and forth. I think I read that they shot those parts on Imax 35mm film or something. If you have a 16:9 screen its not a problem. If you zoom to fill a 2.35 screen when it flips to 16:9 it will be to big. But hey, Atleast with the jvc I wont have to get out of my seat to change the zoom .

You probably already know this but if not the MODE1, MODE2 and MODE3 buttons on the remote are a quick way to change the zoom. I have them mapped to the 3 most popular aspect ratios. Very handy for films like this that switch AR during the movie.

Oh yea, that was the first thing I did! Motorized lens shift with memory was the 2nd biggest selling point aside from the fact its a JVC.

Hahahahaha. Well typical...had mi6 4k on the way but people wanted to watch it today so I rented the bluray.

The first 2.35 to full screen switch was easy. The 2nd one I think drove home the fact I need s 16:9 screen. I've never seen 2 characters in a 2.35 scene talk to another character in a 16:9 screen. And this goes back and forth for 10 to 15 minutes.

I'd really like to know how people with high $ anamorphic lens and electronic screen masking systems deal with this. Tron and dark knight didn't do that.
