Need help with callibration setup. Bought spyder express and loaded jvc callibration software. Everything seemed to go well. I put iris into manual mode and -15. What other settings should I put when starting callibration? Or does the callibration take over?
Using software I could get the disc to get in orange box. Guide I read said about 1 foot from screen so thats where I put it. What do people use to prop up the device in front of acreem?

Did simple hd source callibration to start. Will post those images shortly on here. I know I need to do it again for 4k. Watched netflix in uhd and seems to be alot better already.

One foot from screen sounds really far from the projector lens, which is what the meter should be facing.
Use a tripod to hold the meter.

I hope so, hopefully bulbs come down in price by the time it needs one too lol.

Im coming from a sony vplhw10 or 15, I some how ended up with a hybrid, it says vplhw15 on the outside but has vplhw10 menu settings. The bulb price is hard to swallow since I just bought a brand new OEM one for the sony for $75. I have the sony set up still and the jvc on top of my media stand since I dont have a mount for it. Ive watched a few things back and forth and the main difference with the rs420 is, surprise, black levels. The sony looks fine for certain content. Like the equalizer 2 I watched the train intro scene back to back, looked identical. This is all bluray stuff.

I watched fallout in 4k, it wasnt that great because I dont like film grain. Watched some avengers infiniti war in 4k and it looked great. hell or high water was an impulse buy just for some 4k content since it was 5 or 6 bucks used. It looked REALLY good.

Biggest difference is the black bars on 2.35 content are not noticeable anymore when im zoomed in to fill my 2.35 screen.

The only thing I dont like is the buzz it makes while in 4k mode. Honestly I have a little buyers remorse, the hc4000 wouldve been easier to integrate into my setup. Couldve used the same mount. And I see amazon has them onsale now for under 1300.

As subjective as the question is, I’ll ask it anyway

I’ve been plugging away at building my space for a few years now. A little over a year ago I picked up the 420 thinking I was close to completing the room and I wanted to lock in on the screen size.

Well, here I am over a year later and the room is still under construction; almost done but still under construction. With 10 minutes on the projector I’m now wondering if I should sell and pick up up the latest model.

So many things to consider.

If 4k/HDR are important to you, the newer models will make this a lot easier. With the 420, you'll need to also have an HDFury Linker or Vertex before the Projector, to maintain the Dynamic Iris, if that's important to you. And for good HDR picture quality, you'll either need to import some Custom Gamma Curves, or buy the Panasonic UB-820 which does its own tone-mapping, and is well thought of in this regard.

The new ones also have Native 4k panels, which will provide a step up in sharpness and detail relative to the 420's eShift. Whether or not this would be a big factor will depend on screen size, distance, etc.

Sync times are long and annoying on current JVC Projectors, and have reportedly been cut in half or so in the new ones.

If you're thinking of selling your 420, you should do it now, because once the new JVC's hit the market, there are likely to be many of them up for sale.

As for which new JVC model to consider, there is once again a lot to consider, and ultimately depend on how much money you're willing to spend.

What gamma value did you use for HDR? Looks more like 2.4 than ST2084.

I believe 2.6. Should I redo it with st2084?

@lizrussspike what settings are you using these days for your 420/oppo203 combo for hdr and sdr? It was a while since you kindly sent me yours 7 months ago. I am buying more and more UHD titles and I am not super happy with the picture on HDR.

Thanks.

@dvzzz, I will send you what I am currently using, and have had mine calibrated. Have those as well, if you are interested. Just got this, so give me a few, and get something back to you. Did you ever download @Javs curves:https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-di...hread-100.html post 2976? It made quite a difference, and well worth your time and effort. You may just want to get the Panasonic DP-UB820/824.

Thank you, much appreciated. I have downloaded curves but need to find a Windows machine, my understanding that Parallels could be "touchy".

I must agree these simple to implement settings from Dominic made my 520 and my sons 420 look fabulous with HDR. I used custom gamma settings on my older 500 with mixed results. Unless you are seriously into calibration these simple settings get you 90% of the way there. Thanks again Dominic.

I only have 260 hours on the bulb and I check the filter today.

My filter was completely clean. I have a dedicated room that does not see much action unless we're up there shooting pool or watching a movie.

Well I was going to upgrade to an NX7, but life forced me to order a bulb and live another year with the this magnificent projector(the 420).

So ways to improve.. I have the Oppo 203, would the Panasonic 820 look better? Do I need one of those HDFury things?

Where do I get these custom gamma curves and what’s the procedure to import them?
KBMAN likes this.

Under Import, you can further choose the type. If you select Gamma that will accept the .jgd files.

Ok when I click the import, or gamma button (or any button) it gives a little error that says "Error in detecting the model". Despite it connecting just fine to the projector and even inputting the serial number.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

You probably downloaded the wrong version software. RS420 requires version 9.

You probably downloaded the wrong version software. RS420 requires version 9.
Ok got the right software downloaded... when I import a gamma file, is something supposed to happen? I imported a Jav gamma file, selected gamma, clicked the import button, select the file and nothing happens. Can't see any new options in the projector.. One of the guides gives you these python and arve tools.. only they contain random files rather than programs. I hate that i can only mess with this while the projector is on, waste of bulb hours.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

You need to click on Start to load the curve.

You can run Arves Tool without turning on the projector and experiment with most features, other than loading the actual curve to the projector.
