Sony VPL-VW285ES and VW385ES 4K HDR Projectors at CEDIA 2017

The Sony VPL-VW285ES and VW385ES projectors bring true 4K resolution and HDR to much lower price points than ever before.

Scott,

Is that a confirmed price on the 675 or are you just assuming that it isn't changing with the new line up?

The reason I ask is because it seems ridiculous to price the 675 at $15K when the newer nearly as capable 385 is only $8K.

Is it possible that Sony will announce a price reduction to the 675?

If they end up being different I can only imagine how pissed folks overseas are going to be.

Man, I'm confused. That article says the HDMI is 18 gbps, but everything else up to this point has said 13.5, so which is it?

Yeah, There is either a different projector for the US market or there was some misreporting somewhere.

Also the new x85 models would be higher bandwidth than the more expensive 675. So even more reason not to buy the overpriced 675.

You could utilise chroma upsampling on the UB900 and get 4k 23p 12bit 4:4:4 for eg. Thats somethig real world for those who dont game.

Regarding the HDMI bitrate, the press release does not specify it for the 285 and 385; I assumed it was 18 Gbps because they can do 60p 10-bit. I'll verify this with the Sony folks and update the article accordingly.

It is very likely 13.5gbs. I read the press release, and it specified 4k/60 10bit which is the 675's limit.

Good to hear Sony is improving their lenses...hopefully all units now resolve full 4K resolution and there is no hit and miss.

Hopes crushed : (

I think anyway. If it does 60fps @ 10-bit is that good enough for PC desktop? Or does that imply you still don't have 4:4:4 which you need?

Edit: Ok, bad for 4k desktop, minor degradation for 4k PC games. I just don't understand why $!000 TVs have 18Gbps HDMI but a $5k projectior doesn't.

Glad to read that SONY is finally offering an improved lens for the VPL-VW675ES.
How about the current owners?
Thanks a lot, SONY.

I únderstand you don't want to see any vertical banding with activated FI and 4K program content, but you are aware that you won't see it with the 385 because it doesn't have any FI for 4K program content?

Well a compromise must be made in this case.

I don't like JVC motion. I can tolerate it with CMD on low but then the banding appears. In the new models the banding is described as 'reduced'. Not acceptable. So basically I don't feel like JVC supports 4K FI either.

I can't justify the expense of a Sony projector with 4k FI. So I'm sitting this one out until that feature trickles down. I have around 400 Blu-rays. And around 20 UHD discs. I'll be fine for now.

Now that I know what projector I want to purchase, I'm feeling very impatient . Does anyone know how long it typically takes for dealers to get new projectors? The press release said available now, so I'm hoping I don't have to wait very long.

Good catch. Some of them also show in the icons for features "3D World - Created by Sony" ... any ideas on what that is, other than marketing fluff for "3D"?
