My screen is 108" with a gain of 1.2 approx. I currently have an HW40ES which had a spec of 1700 lumens so that will be my reference point. It is plenty bright enough on low power.

IMO yes, plenty bright. My screen is bigger than yours and I never feel like I need more brightness. Im extremely happy with 4k HDR. Just this weekend I watched Spiderman Homecoming, Pirates 5 and Fantastic Beasts all on 4k UHD bluray and was blown away at the pq.

The settings I like for 4k HDR (until I get a pro calibration) are cinema 2 with lamp on high, iris fully open, dynamic iris on, contrast enhancer on med or low depending on the movie. I think it looks fantastic

Are these good? Any suggestions?

And Sony Support recommends these suggestions for viewing. Good advice?

Sony Support:
Follow these steps to set up the projector for 3D viewing:

Turn off the projector.
Connect the 3D Sync Transmitter to the 3D Sync input on the back of projector.
IMPORTANT:

Not all 3D Projectors have the ability to connect a 3D Sync Transmitter. Refer to the instructions manual to check if a 3D Sync Transmitter can be connected to your projector. Go to Manuals, Specifications & Warranty.
If your projector does not have the ability to connect a 3D Sync Transmitter, skip steps 2 and 3.
Set the 3D Sync Transmitter in a place where it is free from obstruction.
Connect the 3D source device to the projector using a High-Speed HDMI® cable.
NOTE: For more information regarding the HDMI cable required for 3D viewing visit http://www.hdmi.org.

If using a 3D capable Blu-ray Disc® player or PlayStation® 3 (PS3) console, insert a 3D movie or game title. If you have subscribed to 3D programming through your cable or satellite provider, tune the receiver or set-top box to the station with 3D programming.
NOTE: Confirm that your player does not need a software update to be capable of playing 3D Blu-ray Disc discs. You can determine if your Blu-ray Disc player needs a software update by accessing the customer support website for your particular model.

Using the supplied remote, turn on the projector and press the INPUT button to select the appropriate HDMI input.
NOTES:

Normally your 3D projector should automatically detect a 3D signal and display the image in 3D mode. If this does not happen, select 3D and the proper 3D format (Side-by-Side or Over-Under) from the menu.
At this point the image on the screen may appear blurry or out of focus. Put on the 3D glasses and synchronize them with the transmitter.
NOTE: For model-specific steps regarding any of the information provided in this solution, refer to the supplied operations manual. Go to Manuals, Specifications & Warranty.
I would recommend the "XPAND X105-RF-X1 Rechargeable 3D RF/Bluetooth Glasses" on amazon.
I didn't have a transmitter to attach or anything. All you do is display a 3D image, put on the glasses and follow the instructions that come with the glasses to register them with the projector. This only has to be done once. After that all you do is hit the little button to turn 3D on/off. You can also play with the 3D settings on the projector to adjust brightness as well as I use High lamp for 3D viewing.

Awesome, looks like a fun day for you. Please let us know what the options are for 4k display. Can you set it to run in 4k 60 without HDR to get rid of banding? Or can you force 4k 24 or 30 HDR to get rid of banding? Thanks! Have fun!

I'm trying to order the 385 from a dealer up in Canada, and I'm being told there's a 4 to 5-week wait. Is that the case in the US now as well?

So games will not be the only products suffering from banding once UHD films go towards higher frame rates. Of course, I do not think we will see many films out in 60 fps in a very short time so the investjment may be viable for 4 to 5 years. Personally, I am looking at a longer time span.
I am evaluating the 285, but I also have my eyes on the UHZ65 from Optoma. Two entirely different projectors each with their weack and strong points. Sincerely, if I could I would buy the 760 and be done with it, but then others factors could become an issue
Not to push you in one way or the other, but in addition to what @MOberhardt said, I'd also contend that in most 60fps movie content you'll have to go looking for banding. Scenes that provoke it aren't going to be as common in movies as they are in games where the rendering engine can create smooth gradients for everything. And, in movie content, sometimes banding is in the source because of a variety of reasons (compression being one).

That said, I'm still on the fence, but leaning towards waiting another year to see what shakes out.

Its going to probably take a while to download my first game (COD WWII) since most these 4k games are 100gig. So I probably can't start playing it for a little while...though I did take vacation days rest of the week so I will have plenty of time to play and provide feedback.

Here is a picture of the 4k menu...you can definitely turn HDR off manually for the whole console. Not sure how individual games will work, they might have a similar option at the game level. I will experiment with HDR on and off this week.

Thank you! Is the way you have the boxes checked the best way to run it on our projectors? i.e. leave the 4:2:2 box unchecked

I have no idea yet (I suspect it is) , that was the default configuration for 4K and I have not adjusted any settings yet. Still downloading my first game

Plenty of VW285's available though. Maybe Sony concentrated on building those first.

I'm still on the fence as well. My heart says Sony due to a life long appreciation of all their equipment I own, back to my first gen Playstation. But so many are trying to make me think the JVC is a better option.

I do have to make a call in a few months though. I'm building my movie room finally and have the rest of my gear, just waiting on a projector. I would like to see how the 885 shapes up, but it really is more than I want to spend.

I'm in the same boat, but for the 285. My dealer called today and was told maybe the end of the month.

I'm in a similar boat. Moving into a new house in December, finally have some space in the basement to build an HT, and trying to decide what to do. I may just use my 75" Sony flat screen for a while. Fortunately, I'm in no rush. I've been without a projector for my whole life, so...I can wait a bit longer, lol.

Well, you could pair a 285 with an Oppo 203, then you have one button push aspect ratio change between scope and 16:9 going through the Oppo. If you have a second source, you could use the Oppo 203 HDMI input.

Yours landed early congrats! Mine should be here any second. My guess is Live is going to be hammered. I have 1gbps fiber connection but I’ll try the network transfer. I grabbed 4K content on my One S so hopefully it’s quick! I’ll throw pics up soon as I can.

But doing this means not using the full width of the projector's pixels to display 16:9 content right?

With power zoom and focus - even though it doesn't have lens memory, you could manually zoom between 2.35:1 and 16:9 using the powered lens and remote. I did that for 7 1/2 years with a Sim Lumis Host. It's not that hard, and I wound up not having to do it all that often. Just FYI.

FedEx has until 8:00 here in the Houston area to deliver tonight... I am starting to doubt they will make it.

I am relying on you guys to show me some images of 4k 60Hz HDR to see where we have to deal with banding but which games support this? I am still considering purchasing a 385 if the banding is not too distracting.

That is terrible. I wonder if it was not double boxed when shipped so that it was easy to identify as a high dollar item?

I don't know. The thief is an idiot because UPS has cameras all over that place. They have him on video. They won't provide any additional details.

I am relying on you guys to show me some images of 4k 60Hz HDR to see where we have to deal with banding but which games support this? I am still considering purchasing a 385 if the banding is not too distracting.

Quit complaining . I don’t have fiber. My connection is about 230Mbps max.

I assume you are connecting via Ethernet ?

The banding is not bad on assassins creed. If you stare at the sky it is noticeable more if you stare at the sky. The 4K hdr stuff I?ve played is stunning still.

Question for those that have had a projector or this projector with a dynamic iris. What is the difference with the full, limited and off setting. Along with the brightness slider. I?ve had mine on full and max brightness. Not sure if that?s the best setting. Any advice would be appreciated.
