For those who are running my curves currently and are interested, Manni just posted some new curves, I took a look, and compared them to mine on a plot, Manni's curves are redesigned by him to be a lot brighter and have more shadow detail. Looks like they are mostly identical to mine up to the highlight rolloff, which is interesting because now he seems to be using a much less steep rolloff exactly like my V1 curves where. I made my new curves with a steeper rolloff while looking at some content on screen.

Just for academic comparison.

Those of you using my curves already, looks like we have already been looking at mostly the same image

Manni's are the light grey lines, mine are the darker black lines... As for the shadow detail and midrange of the curves, they are almost completely identical to each other, interesting

107Ynit / 4000nit Manni DVE / 4000nit Javs V2 curves:

107Ynit / 1200nit Manni DVE / Javs 1200nit V2 Curves, this one is slightly different in the mid tones, it will be ever so slightly brighter.

Those of you that used to run my V1 curves, they had a much more shallow roll off, lets look at the 4000nit one.

The s7 is pretty good. Not as good as a newer iphone, but good enough for many things.

Settings were pro mode, 1/20 shutter, 80 exposure, and no zoom . Zooming in is where you start to have issues because you're zooming in on the chip, not with the lens..

I will borrow a friend's mirrorless camera for the next test. I'm in between cameras, being unable to decide if i should pull the trigger on a GH5 or wait a little longer for the prices to drop when the gh5s pops. Or maybe a sony nx80 camcorder.

For others using the Oppo 203, is there any measurement I can make to determine the best setting for the luminance level for HDR->SDR conversion? I have a light meter so could either measure lumens at the screen or at my main viewing position. Just wondering if it might be as simple as that, then converting to nits, to at least get a good starting point...

Anyone know if using X-Rite i1 Basic Pro 2 as the meter for Autocal V.10 will give better results than just using the Spyder 5?

Give them a go... No harm in having a look. Try loading the one of them to gamma slot 3 and compare them to mine. I did that yesterday.

Mannis new curves are closer to my v1 curves.

I prefer my v2 curves right now. You would only see difference in things like really bright clouds. Everything else will be identical.

Dealer locations

I'm in Northeast Ohio and the only projectors I've found on display in the Cleveland/Akron area showrooms are from Epson and Sony. I was specifically hoping to see the RS540 before making a purchase decision. I'm willing to drive a couple hours. I've called the Columbus and Pittsburgh area dealers listed on JVC's website and none of them have JVC models on display either.

Does anyone know of a JVC dealer in relative proximity to me that actually has an RS540 (or even a 440 or 640) on display? Thanks in advance.

You may have better luck searching out a forum member in your area to live demo anything.

I know someone in Cleveland OH that has an RS500. The 1080P performance is the same. If he is using custom curves or an Oppo, then the 4K HDR performance will be very close to an RS540.

Great series. Did you find the lower end had some banding which benefited from lowering brightness a couple of clicks?

I also have a HTPC for movies/music (JRiver – madVR) and a Roku Premiere that went through the Onkyo then to the projector’s HDMI 2 input.

I didn’t use any of the video processing with the Onkyo (just “through” mode) but did have different setting in the Panasonic between HDMI 1 and 2. I recently replaced the Onkyo with an Anthem AVM 60 that has no video processing.

My question is, would there still be an advantage to using both HDMI inputs on the RS540? The reason I’m asking is that I will also need to replace the HDMI cable(s) to the projector and if there’s no advantage I’ll only run one from the Anthem to the RS540.

Thanks
I’m sorry to ask again, but I need to make a decision. If I’m asking the question incorrectly or not in the proper thread, please advise.

Surely someone here is using multiple sources (Oppo, HTPC, Roku, etc.) with their JVC projectors. Is anyone running everything through their receiver/preamp or is it still better to run some sources directly to the projector?

Thanks

Generally it's OK to run all through the AVR but make sure video processing is off. A like my Anthem as it has no processing at all.

Why HDR Bright mode or course, so anything GREEN is a little more green. And anything BLUE, will look a little less blue.

I'm running everything thru a Denon x2300 in video Pass Thru mode. I plan to experiment with placing the oppo 203 between the denon and the projector. I know someone else has done this and it's been working fine.

640 calibration

Just thought I would mention that Chad was at my house on Friday and calibrated my RS640. I'm not very technically inclined and I was very happy with the projector before the calibration. When he was finished, SDR and 3D were noticeable better and HDR was way improved. Colors seemed much more punchy. Thanks Chad for showing me what this projector can do. Jared

I’ve only had my projector 790 for a couple weeks now. The only configuration I did was use Disney Wow to set the brightness and contrast. I also measured the lumens with my light meter and I am getting 1655 lumens on high lamp and 1190 lumens on low lamp.

Does anybody have any good recommendations for Settings for watching the Super Bowl?

I remember seeing some banding, but I do not remember if it was on Altered Carbon or another show. I have put 37 hours on the 640 in a week. When you consider that I use two projectors and probably put 15 to 20 on the other projector, I have put in some viewing time this week. I seem to recalling thinking the banding I saw, I assume it was in the source.

Are you talking about Oppo direct to projector and audio from Oppo to AVR. Or are you talking about feeding AVR HDMI out to Oppo HDMI input. Then video direct from Oppo to projector and HDMI audio from Oppo to AVR for when playing BD's. That way all sources can use Opp processing?

In the opening title sequence when the main character is free floating in the water and we see him from below, when that scene transitions to black, is when I saw the banding most dramatically. Could have just been a bad dissolve choice.

I just binged watched it. I didn't see any banding at all on that scene or any where else.

Great series with HDR & WCG were a real treat.

Perhaps someone else with the 203 who has can put those up please.

The curves are simple enough to upload. I would really appreciate it someone could upload JAVS 1200 curve as is, and zero out the PJ settings and then compare to the Oppo settings.

I’ve seen someone say Manni’s new curves (and by inference JAVS curves are very close) are close to the Oppo settings, I’ve seen some say ‘way’ better but not specific about what they were comparing.

Or should I spend the same money as what the Oppo would be on a calibration?
