Either way you will need a lamp soon, people where talking about some units under $200 on E-Bay.......if you start looking now maybe you can get lucky....

Thanks..I decided to buy a replacement bulb instead of a full lamp. It cost $150. We'll see how well it work.

Good day Members....I may be able to get a RS540, is it good for tv and sports or is the better option the new Epson 5050. I realize the 540 is overall a better projector but I watch a lot of sports. Please help. Thanks

I own this projector and would not recommend it if you are going to be watching a lot of sports. It’s fantastic for movies, tv and gaming but if I watched a lot of sports I would check out something different such as a DLP.

Out of interest, has anyone used the special IR codes to unlock access to the additional ISF and THX calibrator modes? Do these give you anything useful over and above just being extra memory slots that you can fill?

I found a PDF online with the codes in it; I've never seen them discussed but wonder if there is any benefit.

Random note - was watching a movie yesterday and had the sub level cranked a bit higher than usual. This one part hit HARD (prob around 18Hz or so; the place was shaking more than I like). Over the next few mins of the movie (after things calmed down) I looked and realized my horizontal lens shift moved prob 5" off center to the left side of the screen

I've noticed slightly more movement with my x990 than my previous Sony HW40ES (due to the much heavier chassis of the JVC) but sheesh... nothing like that ever happened before throwing the lens shift out from vibration...

I know this type of thing cannot be good for the PJ but at that same point its impossible to tell when some ULF frequencies are going to hit. My SW array frequency response is nice and flat so I don't want to mess with that.

How bad for the PJ is it with vibration shaking it around? (this is an impossible question to answer I know; just asking for experiences/opinions...)

Still making my way through the forum and enjoying my projector.

Question regarding sharpness and e-shift.

When 4k e-shift is “off’, images are crystal clear and sharp. This includes Windows 10 text in 1080p, Quick Brown Fox chroma test image, and the JVC Focus grid (grid has nice definition - similar to JAVS’ images on page 1.

However, when when 4k e-shift is “On”, test images are soft ... Windows 10 text (3840x2160) is not as sharp and the JVC focus grid is blurry... unable to see the two rows of green horizontal pixels.

Is this normal? Seems odd that 1080p is sharper than 4k.

Here's bulb I used... just got and installed it this afternoon. $135USD

It was easy to replace after taking the lamp assembly out of the projector. I only needed a phillips screwdriver to remove and replace the bulb in the assembly.. I also used non-latex gloves to keep the oils from my hands off the new bulb.

The researched the one I purchased and the seller to ensure it was the same as the original OEM part by USHIO. All the markings on the one I received were the same as the bulb I removed from the projector. I took a little risk and it's working fine so far. I'll report back if I have a failure or problems.

I find it to be just fine for sports. I mostly watch on my tv in the living room, but the Super Bowl and The Masters looked great on my unit. It’s not as bright as the Epson would be, but I’ve tweaked the settings for TV to my liking.

With that said, I mostly use my 540 for HT, so that was I purchased the JVC.

Did you measure lumens with the original lamp and the new lamp? I tried a couple of these from other sources and the lamps were all about 20%-30% less light output. Altho the ones that are sold in the classifieds here seem to be legit.

I agree with Tom! I'm also a sports fan and find my X990 very satisfying for watching football, basketball, baseball, etc.

This is good to hear. I have been thinking of getting a x790 or nx5 and heard these weren’t the best for sports watching. I mainly watch tv/movies in my home theater but for big sporting events I like to watch on the big screen instead of my 65” C7.

As I mentioned earlier I have the X790 and I was coming from a Runco LS1 which was a DLP.

If I were to rate them I’d give the Runco a 10/10 and the JVC around a 6/10 for sports watching. It’s a very noticeable difference when watching fast moving sports such as hockey.

From what I’ve read the new NX series is much better and a big improvement over the eShift projectors. Ideally you need to see one for yourself to find out if it will be adequate or not.

Thanks for response. I’d be coming from a dlp as well so that helps as a reference. I’ll check it out in person and hopefully have a chance to demo them.

If you like CMD / frame interpolation, then you can get decent motion out of an LCOS projector for sports viewing with FI enabled.

The issue is older DLP's like the Runco had extremely high motion resolution even without any trickery.
However, newer DLP's may not have this same motion resolution. It has been a very long time since I've seen the motion resolution test, but I know on some of the newer DLP's, the motion resolution was about the same as an LCOS projector.

So it's not just a DLP vs. LCOS motion resolution issue, it's a specific DLP vs. specific LCOS issue.

I wonder why reviewers don't measure the motion resolution of various projectors or even TVs? I came from a DLP to a JVC and it does noticeably blur when things start moving. I think some people notice this more than others and would like to see some actual tests which reliably measure it.
