I don't watch 3D, but many who do say it's almost "DLP like" on the new JVCs.

The Chief custom elite mount is $467 on the Canadian Amazon, that is...too much. Not sure if this PJ has enough lens shift to shelf mount it in my HT...have to do some calculations in the near future.

Nice. I had a BenQ W7000 DLP for about 2 years and it did 3D really well except it had poor contrast. Absolutely no ghosting at all and very bright. I hated the rainbow effect from the color wheel though. Im very sensitive to that. I enjoy 3D on the Sony much better overall cause of the improved contrast and similar brightness even though it does ghost a bit.

Im convinced the 3D is going to be fantastic on the JVC RS440 with its contrast and brightness. If anyone else could chime in about their experience with 3D on the RS440 that would be cool too. Thanks.

That is definitely overpriced.

Thanks for the input. I've got an AE2000U that I'm starting to look into replacing. I'm just trying to decide how much I'm willing to spend since the 5040UB, RS440, and RS540 all get a lot of praise.

How sensitive are you to flicker? 3d flicker is the weak point of the 96hz JVCs. I also have a Benq w7000 that I prefer overall for 3d vs my JVC X790 (RS540). The JVC is one step forward (contrast) and two steps back (flicker and ghosting) vs a single chip DLP like the 7000. The only 3d I prefer on the JVC is films that are mostly dark where flicker does not rear it's ugly head as often.

If your not too sensitive to flicker though I'm sure you'll love the 3d on the JVCs.

Thanks for the input. I actually get a bit of flicker on the Sony 40ES as well with certain content. I forgot to mention that as a down point of the Sony compared to the BenQ DLP. On certain bright scenes there is a small amount of flicker and like you said with the JVC, dark scenes tend to hide it very well. A full white field is prolly the biggest offender. Its not a deal breaker for me though.

You should be fine in that case. Others have mentioned flicker is the same between the Sony and JVCs.

Well for that type of price I would be surly trying to box/shelf mount it. Test the projector on a latter or cabinet and see what happens? ( Have someone hold the projector at all times of course. )

Room in still under construction, but I'll be trying that out when its ready. I also have this mount that was given to me when I bought the projector:

https://www.amazon.ca/OmniMount-3N1-.../dp/B002VJOUMW

Just opened the box and while the instructions are terrible, there is an optional step to use a PFC Coupler/NPT Pipe to lower it

I would not use that mount to support my JVC projector. I would buy a better mount.

For reasons in functionality or stability/strength? Says up to 40lbs.

What other mounts are people using for this PJ?

Bubble Gum and Elmer's Glue. Make sure to only use Gatorade gum.

Only kidding, you can also just shelf mount it if you can get around the aesthetics.

Strength/stability are the main reason with functionality also a small factor. Mounts like that just do not hold the projector very secure. Usually the projector will move, if you lightly touch the mount and I know my subs would have a field day with that mount.

Cool thanks Toe. I did a little more digging and found the same thing you said. Most say the JVC has better 3D than the Sonys just the flicker issue is there. Wish it wasn't there but its not a deal breaker. I do watch a lot of 3D but mostly Im watching 2D BDs.

Thanks again for the projector mount links but I hope you can help with a couple more newbie questions. When I follow the link to the Chief/Milestone page the mounts listed with the extension arms do not show the RS440 as compatible but if I do a search for that model it shows the same mount but it includes a choice of 2 mounting plates instead of the arms. One is a flat plate the other has a small 45 degree lip (not a ceiling mount plate).. I'm sure I must be missing something. Also, is it possible to purchase directly from Chief/Milestone? It says to register for pricing but it asks to register as a re seller with a company name. I was hoping you could possibly help me with an Amazon link as I have store credit there that I am hoping to use. Thanks

I forgot to link you to the actual plate for the JVC....the fourth piece you need. It's the SLB281.

Just search on Amazon for those actual Chief names and you should find them - if they carry them.

So, it works like this when it's all connected:

ceiling plate (bolted to ceiling joist) ---> tube screwed into ceiling plate ---> mount screwed into tube --> SLB281 connected to mount and RS440.

And what are your thoughts on the Universal Chief mount (RPAU) ? That would replace the Mount and the custom plate? So Ceiling plate -> tube -> RPAU

The RPMx is their best. It's the most stable and versatile. I've had it for four years and it's outstanding. I really cannot say how their lesser model would do.

Hello, seriously thinking of buying this, but how does the X5900 work as a 4k pc gaming monitor? I would be gaming more than watching films (60/40) and I have a cave. Please post back your pc gaming or htpc feedback and mention possible issues, if any. Thanks in advance!

What have you guys done to perform a basic calibration on your JVC? I don’t have any real equipment, so I used a WOW disc today and after going through the contrast and brightness patterns, I literally only bumped the brightness and contrast 1-2 notches from the defaults. Are these things set out of the factory that accurately as far as brightness and contrast or am I missing something? Are there other settings I should enable to get a better black level? My iris isn’t set for Auto 2. Are you using the default gamma or one of the other presets? I’m not sure if there is anything that I can do gamma-wise without a spectrometer.

Do people ever crank down the iris and then boost the gamma to compensate?

I’m no pro gamer, but I do play racing games with me kids and I’ve never detected any lag. I have no issues with this projector for gaming. I have an nVidia Shield and a PS3, so I don’t have a modern system with HDR games, but I do like that the HDMI inputs are fast enough to handle 4K and HDR at the same time, It having that ability was probably the biggest flaw in the Epson 5040 that I almost bought before I decided on the JVC.

You don't want to boost the gamma to try and compensate like that. You should adjust the manual iris according to how much light output you need. Auto 2 is the best for the DI. Out of the box, Natural mode, 6500K, and a custom 2.3 or 2.4 gamma selection is probably best. You can also use the Wow disc to set brightness - anything beyond that will require a meter. I've had my RS440 cal'd by Chad B - highly recommended and makes a big difference for SDR and HDR.

Who's this Chad B guy everyone keeps talking about? Does he visit Canada often? Natural mode over Cinema?

He doesn't visit Canada. Michael Chen is in Canada and might be worth reaching out to.

Natural mode is more accurate than Cinema.
