JVC Projector Tools For Sony

Hi @All

For users who use an HDR/BT2020 enabled Sony projector and are not satisfied with the original HDR10 gamma curve, there is a new possibility.
A small team from Germany has decided to achieve an improvement here.

Also in this forum one has become aware of our efforts.
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-digital-hi-end-projectors-3-000-usd-msrp/2921322-sony-vpl-vw285es-owners-thread-24.html#post55207126

In a second step, we were able to offer ready-made HDR gamma curves, which are loaded into the projector with the Sony ImageDirector:
https://www.magentacloud.de/lnk/tqPPtDkS
Here is also a guide to save your own gamma curves with the ImageDirector. We also need it for the next step.

But now the User Mule from the German HIFI-Forum, with the support of Dutyfree and Omardris, has adapted the familiar ARVE tool so that it can be used by Sony projectors.

With "JVCProjectorToolsForSony" creating your own Gamma curves for Sony projectors which can directly be uploaded to the projector with Sony Image Director software (tested with V3.1).

This Tool is a modified version of ARVEHJ's project and can be found under:
https://github.com/mule1970/JVCProjectorToolsForSony

The direct download link to the ZIP archive of the current version 1.2.1 is:
https://github.com/mule1970/JVCProjectorToolsForSony/archive/1.2.1.zip

The following changes had been made in comparison to V0.0.2 developed by ARVEHJ:
•Creates 1024 (10Bit) steps Gamma curves for Sony-Projectors instead of only 256 (8Bit) curves for JVC projectors
•Creates Sony Image Director compatible files ( .ldt) which can directly be uploaded to a compatible Sony projector via Image Director
•Disable JVC specific menu entries
•Bugfix to avoid corruption of config files
•naming convention of config files has been changed to .sconf, because existing .conf files for JVC projectors are NOT compatible with this tool

Prerequisites
Python 3.6 or later installed
https://www.python.org/downloads/

Sony Projector with Sony Image Director (latest V3.1 tested)
https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?mdl=VPLHW50ES&upd_id=7813&os_group_id= 6

Otherwise, the operation of the original tool from Arve has not changed.
We hope that the ARVE tool specialists in this forum will assist the Sony users in using the tool.

Our thanks in any case to Arve of this publication has expressly agreed and of course to all users who have already diligently tested the gamma curves and hopefully will provide much more input with the now available options for tuning the image quality of the Sony projectors!

Guys, you have disabled the issues tab in your GitHub repository, May I ask why?

Perhaps perfect code?

For sure: Perfect!

The reason is that I'm not going support the whole tool (including the part developed by Arve), but only the special Sony part. So if you identify any issues for example in regards of the *.ldt files for use with the Sony Image Director Software do not hesitate to simply post your issue in this thread.
But if you identify any issues in regards of creating gamma curves please open an issue at Arves github repository. If Arve releases a new version of his tool including changes which are also useful for Sony projectors I'm going to try to publish an equivelant version for Sony as soon as possible.

Hope that clears things up.

I just read through the PDF instructions, very simple for end users to load the pre-built curves in with minimal effort. great work here.

has there been any comparisons with the custom curves vs. Sony's default curve + slider adjustments?

The instructions + curves are in this download. read the PDF it's relatively straight-forward to import those curves.

Yes, 520 is being supported. I used my own 520 for testing purposes while developing the tool.

Hi,
Our curves have a slightly better tracing in dark areas.
In the package are 4 HDR curves (HDR gamma 7 - 10).
HDR-Gamma 7 corresponds to the default curve, but with better tracing.
HDR gamma 8 to 10 gradually produce a brighter Picture.

Is VW-500 supported too since there is no BT2020 color space?

I too would love a gamma setting for 3D if that is doable.

I followed the instructions in the pdf and established a network connection to the projector but after opening Image Director, the small "settings" window is greyed out. All options are greyed out and it doesn`t respond to anything so it`s impossible to choose any gamma presets.

Anyone else experiencing this? I have a Sony VW550 pj.

Edit: nevermind, pj was in HDR auto mode so hence why i couldn`t see the gamma presets. Just tried this and WOW! really impressive stuff Watched 10 min of The Revenant and it was excellent.
A big thanks to OMARDRIS, dutyfree and anyone else involved in this project.
mirodk and scoochie like this.

Yes I was blown away as well. Best part is that I'm low lamp now on everything but 3D. Would be so grateful if we had a gamma curve for 3D, so I could switch to low lamp for 3D as well. I'm already setting the 3D brightness to STANDARD instead of HIGH because STANDARD eliminates almost all cross-talk.

This is a concern as Sony doesn't include Image director with the 4K machines (but it did with my previous VW50 and VW90ES), and also how does one put the original curves back if you should so wish?

Simple, just restore all values to deafult in the Sony setttings.

These will work with the 675es as well? Has anyone used these with that model? Any check for viruses and such? No offense to the people who are doing these but just tying to be careful.....especially with a $15k projector.

Yes, all Sony projectors supporting HDR & BT2020 will work. I did it on my VW550 yesterday which is the exact same pj as the VW675.

Hi guys,

today I loaded the 4 HDR curves in my Sony VW550 and I made the suggested settings ... what to say? SUPER!!!
The curves are not perfectly calibrated for my room but the images are fantastic!

I wanted to buy an expensive radiance pro to accurately calibrate the HDR, but now, I'm undecided about the purchase...

Someone can tell me if the processor is really necessary?

Thanks in advance

I did, I found them a little too harsh personally. Perhaps that's the idea, but the feeling of depth is a little lost now, not much difference with SDR anymore.

I have exactly the same feeling, as a VW760 owner. The 4 HDR curves on the VW760 look a bit flat compared to e.g. the HarperVision settings for HDR found here, which I like a lot:
