Of course, I totally agree, but I guess it is not possible to know what the important information of a scene is to adapt the tone mapping for it and ignore all the other elements.

The sky detection can help to ignore bright flat areas, because they can be "detected" on the histogram and are, most likely, not part of the most important information of a scene.

But when you have a very bright background which is not flat (like the example of Rogue One you posted) and a darker foreground which is the main focus of a scene, this last will appear too dark if you don't use shadow boost to limit the compression of that dark area.

I do not think there is another solution for these situations at the moment, but maybe madshi has some new ideas

I thought the Shadow Recovery option was part of HSTM and required HSTM to be enabled...?

Not at all, you can use them independently.

Question

Hi, folks. I just started using madVR and right off the bat I'm not understanding why my madVR settings > hdr page isn't letting me set my target peak nits (it's just stuck on 200) and doesn't show all of the advanced settings like in others' screenshots (dynamic target nits, etc.)?

I'm using MPC-HC.1.9.6.7.x64 and latest MadVR (see screenshot).

(apologies if this is covered somewhere, I've been trying to pour through all the different guides)

**EDIT** Nevermind, I needed to install the latest beta madVR 113 from here https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-di...l#post59127786

I have to say, madVR is f**king amazing. I just went through trying to calibrate, custom curve static tone map, you name it, could get things looking "good" but knew it just wasn't right. madVR instantly made my Epson 3800 look amazing and put all my previous work to absolute shame. It ain't even the same sport. Mad props to @madshi

JRiver's solution is to turn off MadVR rendering, but obviously, the files in question are not what's delivered in their product. Not sure where to go from here to resolve. Guess I could update to v113, but don't see why v112b is causing an issue. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: I went ahead and installed v113 and will continue the movie from where it lest off. Hoping that fixes the issue...

EDIT 2: Crashed again with nearly identical error msg. Going to need help with debug / fix.

Hi stevenjw, did you ever figure out the cause of this crash or how to fix it? I'm now having the same issue myself.

Yes, it's been fixed for a while. I seem to recall that I was also having issues with Windows 10 crashing and had to resolve that first. I found some file that was part of TMT5 that Windows didn't like. I removed TMT5 and then Windows stopped crashing and madVR was fine. Good luck.

Are you aware that out of the few replies you have posted in this topic, a lot of them are complaints about others being off topic. Simply let it go we have forum moderators for that...

But as you can see, there is no intervention..
And still people are posting all kind of stuff that doesn't belong here. The most of us are waiting what Madshi is going to release, soonish..

We can't stop people from posting messages unrelated to madVR tone mapping development in this thread because they just search for madVR support online, find this thread and starting to post here. Stop answering to those posts is the best way to stop posting.
