Sony VPL-VW1000ES upgrade verification

Hello all,
long time reader first time posting. First thanks for the information you all have posted on here over the years.
I recently purchased a vpl-vw1000es on ebay and the owner stated that the 1100es upgrade was done. It is connected to my Xbox 1s through a Marantz sr7011 with 4k cabable hdmi however when I played the new "star wars last jedi" last night the info screen showed 1080p signal I checked the Xbox 4k box was checked and on Marantz the pass through was set at 4k.
Is there a way to verify that the upgrade was actually done? The serial number on info screen and on side of projector match.
Thanks for any suggestions first time forray into 4k.

I'd make sure you grabbed the 4k disc and not the bluray. Simple mistake but done by many.

Or the DVD out of a Blu-ray case. Then I think " did they do that bad a job of mastering this movie ? Wait a second .....".

You can also send the unit a 4k 60hz signal via HDMI 2 and see if the unit accepts it. That info can be seen on the signal screen of the projector. If you are getting 4k and 60hz on HDMI 2 then the unit has been updated to an 1100

As above, make sure you use HDMI 2.

Sony, for some reason, made port no.2 the more capable of the pair on earlier machines.

I seem to recall that upgraded 1000's reported 1100 on start up?

That is correct Mike. It will report as an 1100 with all 9's for the serial.

That should make it very easy to determine in that case.

Well shoot this guy is in denial claiming it was upgraded sad thing was this is my 40th bday present.. Called united radio, Sony said they did the upgrades, to see if they still could do it and they seemed confused and lost.GGuess I'll just have to demand a return. To bad 5900 seemed like a good price. Ebay tho. 😂

is this the auction? they have a good reputation, ask for the full refund and see if they will quickly honor the mistake. otherwise show the photo(s) to ebay/paypal if it was falsely advertised as upgraded.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-VPL-VW...epid=109601861

another option is asking for a grand back on the mistake and spend some of the $$ on an HD Fury product which will basically eliminate the need for the updated motherboard. If the current HD Fury products were around when I owned the VW1000 I wouldn't have spent thousands to upgrade it, it wasn't worth it in retrospect.

VW1000 + HDFury + either Oppo 203 or upcoming Pansonic 820 would be a good combo.

edit: some extra info if you want to pop off bottom cover to be certain. the original motherboard is green, updated was bluish/green

Except, we are ignoring the Elephant in the room. A lot of the VW1000's had contrast loss on the panels. And a low hour unit was worse than a high hour unit. I would be more concerned if the unit suffered any loss.

I was thinking that Mike, but I didn't want to burst his bubble. In fairness, I believe it was mostly the lower priced Sonys of that time that displayed the worse loss of contrast. But yes, seldom used and set up was the magic elixir that killed SXRD panels.

JVC RS500, Denon 7200WA, 7.2.4 Atmos/DTSX dedicated Theater. 133" Dalite 1.3 screen. M&K S150 + K7 ear level, 4 Tannoy DC overheads.

They showed this screenshot on the listing, shows 1100ES and 0 hours.

I would not have bought that with the CRACK on the casing though. Its been dropped or smashed with an object, no way man.

Good luck with eBay. Let us know how it goes. I would definitely follow Zombie’s advice. Also if the unit is solid on contrast it may be a good option to get money back from the seller and go the HD Fury route as Zombie mentioned. If the panels are bad definitely get a refund. IMO, without the contrast degradation these units still throw great images.

Does the updated board add an Enhanced mode to the HDMI menu like the later models? Might be worth checking and executing if available. ??

I suppose there is the possibility that someone tried to open in up to have a look inside without knowing what they were doing...….. but yes, it is more likely from an impact.

However his screen shots shaky hands aside (we all get them ) look pretty good.
He might have dodged a bullet. (Too much inside to come out of alignment with an impact for it to have had no affect on the picture).

Any chance you can take some pics of scenes with more colour and keeping the camera steady?

Also a close up of the menu will show if panel alignment is dicky.

We have received from manufacturer, units (Sony and JVC) with a cracked housing, that threw a perfect image. Crack occurred in shipping.

The original link I posted looks like it redirected to a different auction?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/273292179...2047675.l10137

Seller information - wggroup (456)

This should be the link for the unit he purchased, I didn't see any screenshots in it

There was a discussion here that lasted several years on this topic.

It wouldn't be very obvious in bright scenes. In Last Jedi, jump to the end of the movie where the boy is sweeping the floor, he looks up to the sky - how does it look? The sky should be reasonably dark. On the affected units, that sky scene would look grey. The only way to know for certain is with a light meter. Even an inexpensive $50 meter would help identify if your unit has the issue.

I guess the internal polys did their job then but how can it get a cracked shell without any other damage? Lucky if you ask me.

I would just say that the badly mastered film that is the last Jedi, is not a good one to use for critical testing.
Even on new units there are some scenes in that film (including the example mentioned) that just present quite badly contrast wise whatever you view them on.
Maybe the newly remastered 4K Matrix would be a better test?

Has happened more than once. And then we have had some that arrived looking perfect and yet received a hard enough impact to throw stuff off at the panel optical block level.

agreed that's probably not the best disc to demo. The first thing I would have done is get any calibration disc, AVS has had one for free for over a decade with basic cal patterns. Check a 0 IRE image with the iris turned off. Does it look reasonably 'black' or more grey like a 30 IRE field? that's what I observed on the 1000/1100's that were affected by the panel issues. ~3K:1 was the measurement on those with the issue.

The takeaway from that is that couriers and shippers don't seem to give a toss.

Keep in mind, that is out of thousands that have been shipped. So a very small percentage. I know several UPS guys. The one that delivers to my house is a great guy. Even gave me his cell number.

Planet earth 2 I think I'm supposed to make the lines look white... 😂 I was able to tell my Marantz to send 4k signal but the Xbox still only sends out 1080p the the Marantz upconverts it. Going to call hdfury today and see what product to use as a go between.
