Yeah my screen is 16:9 and my 1080P 40ES filled the screen equally. Here no matter what I tried I can get it filled. Also as you can see on the picture it seems that the projector is tilted or something.. but if I check the projector it is not tilted.... Getting crazy here...

Here I marked in red your outside margins for a 16:9 screen. Zoom out until those borders reach the screen frame and you will be done. Of course, like others mentioned, you need to align first the top and bottom using lens shift and maybe rotating the projector a little bit.

To fill a 120" 16:9 screen the projector has to be located between 12'-8" to 25'-11".

Ok great the picture says a lot. So you need to zoom a lot more. The side outer lines are for a 17:9 screen you'll need to zoom to the inner lines match up. Also you have a trapezoid problem where the left side is bigger than the right. See it? You'll need to point the projector more to the right, then lens shift it back to the left and repeat this until it's a rectangle not a trapezoid. So between pointing to right, shift, and zoom you should have it.

Are you downloading the curves for the 285ES , and installing it on 295ES. I wasn't sure if it is the same. Where are you downloading it from. THANK YOU

Here is a video describing how to do it. The download links are in the description:

And here is a thread describing how to turn off the 295's zone convergence correction in the service menu which is supposed to sharpen up the image:

I have yet to do either of these mods as my projector is back in it's box until my house remodel is finished.

when I bought the Sony vpl 270es uk spec I registered the guarantee with Sony Professional and with that I got PrimeSupport which gives me access to expert engineers, dedicated maintenance and repair services, well I used this service and emailed them regarding the set up with a 16.9 screen, I asked should I zoom out and go to the 16.9 test pattern lines or zoom in and set to the 17.9 test pattern lines

after a week I received a phone call from a Sony engineer and he told me that the better way was to go to the 17.9 lines and have a small gap at the top and bottom of the screen and that's how mine is set now and what I did was to fill the gaps with extra DEEPBLACK border tape

I did a post on here (post#500) about this but I was confused and unsure if I was doing the right thing that's why I asked Sony, the only thing I don't use now is the aspect ratio button on the remote I just leave things how they are

Why is he talking as if "contrast enhancer" is a feature that is only available in 695ES?

Finally got my Sony 295 today, hooked it to a Yamaha RX2080, my only source of 4k is my apple TV. I have a 1080p standard DirecTV box and a 1080p standard PS4. I'll need to replace them. I'm pretty excited. For some reason, even though I use the test pattern and fill the screen, when I watch a video, it doesn't fill the screen. Also, if I zoom to fill the screen, its like the image is not 16:9 and won't fully fit the screen.

Still excited to try and figure this out tomorrow... I'll post pics once I'm up and running....

The panel is 17x9 (4096x2160). You want to zoom it so that the side top and bottom line to the top of your screen and then the left and right inner lines line up not the outer side edges line up. This will be a centered 16x9 image. If you feed the projector 3840x2160 or 1920x1080 it will auto mask the sides and basically be a 16x9 projector at that point.

Can anybody tell me what type of 3D glasses are compatible (and good) with this projector?

The information "out there" is not clear.

It would appear that the Sony TDG-BT500's are almost unavailable and way expensive.
I have looked at the XPAND X105-RF-X1 and the Hi-Shock RF Pro Black Heaven on-line, but am confused as to what will ACTUALLY work and how good they look.

Any help, much appreciated.

Turns out the same answer you gave is also in this thread with pictures. Just woke up and about to start calibrating and playing. I need to install my Elite 120 screen this week as well, its a grey screen, curious to see how it works since I'm in a controlled lighting environment (mediaroom).

So far this picture even out of the box is pretty incredible compared ot my VPL-VW70. Now I just gotta sell my old projector so my wife doesn't flip...

I have 2 pair of the XPAND X105-RF-X1 that I use with my SONY 385ES. Once you figure out how to pair them, they work well.

Thanks so much. I do have a Panasonic 8000 with 4 pairs of glasses, but am so curious to check out 3D on my new Sony 4K. Just didn't want to spend up big time, in doing so.
It's unfortunate that the Panasonic glasses aren't compatible.

Hello all,
I have a question. I have a Sony VW295ES on the way. I need to replace my HDMI cable as well. Money is tight after getting the projector so I was wondering if getting a 25ft AmazonBasics 18gbps HDMI cable is just asking for trouble? I have a Pioneer SC-91 that I will be plugging it into. If it is not worth saving money on the cable, can anyone recommend a 25-30FT cable for the Sony VW295ES? Thanks in advance.

I bought a 25ft Amazon Basics 18gbps HDMI cable for my first 4k projector and that sucker started dropping signal 2 months into use. Ended up buying a 30' fiber to be done with such failures and have used that with my last 3 4k projectors. But that's not to say I didn't just get unlucky. Buy an Amazon cable for cheaps now, if it goes bad they refund you under warranty, if not.. it works. If you feel like spending $100 later on you can get a decent fiber cable too.

Get the Monoprice Certified Premium which is available at 25ft and 30ft. That works with my LG 4K HDR monitor and with my Sony 295ES.

Problematic HDR from PS4 Slim on VW295ES

I just can't get HDR from the PS4 Slim to look right on the VW295ES.

Apple TV 4k looks great, Xbox One X looks great. Direct HDMI connection from PS4 Slim to projector, with (a variety of) high quality cables, looks over bright and extremely desaturated.

PS4 detects the HDR enabled setup, the games let me switch from SDR to HDR, etc. I've messed with every variant of Limited, Full, Auto, etc.

Any clues? Has anybody else been able to plug n play a PS4 Slim (non-Pro) into this projector and see Spiderman or Uncharted 4 without HDR issues?

Throw distance

Would anyone know what the minimum throw distance would be for this Sony VPL-VW295ES for a 110" screen? How is the performance on this in a dark room with 100% control over ambient light? Does the black and contrast perform well on a white screen? Would grey be better? Considering Black Diamond. Any info or advice prior to purchase is appreciated. Thanks.

I think the manual is available on the Sony website. It is in there.

Thank you both for the HDMI recommendation. I haven't had any issues with the AmazonBasics cable so far but I'll be ordering the Monoprice one too as I need a slightly larger cable. I have another question. I am coming from the Sony 40ES so even though the projector does has its ups and downs, it is a major upgrade from my previous projector. The only thing that really bothers me is the posterization in some scenes in movies. Is it from using Chroma 4:2:0? Has anyone found any ways to remove it? Here is an example that shows my issue:

Also, my projector came with 2.0 firmware. Has Sony released any new firmware updates since? I do not see any referenced on Sony's website.

So I received my 295 coming from a 285 which I sold because I wasn’t getting proper 60 frames from my gaming and I was getting banding I have a question how do you test the 295 with the PS4 to make sure it’s passing enough information

Is anyone having issues with Xbox or PlayStation getting proper 60p

Unbearable fan noise

Hello,

So my brand new 295ES has arrived Saturday (270ES in this parts of the world) replacing my 5-year-old Panasonic PT-AT6000E (PT-AE8000U in US). Initial impressions after fighting the 5yo in-wall HDMI cables: gorgeous picture. Much brighter (the Panny was still on the original lens though) with excellent clarity, contrast and black levels.

However, when trying to enjoy a nice movie I ran into a problem: the Sonny is much, much louder than the Panasonic. The old projector was whisper-quiet, inaudible in regular function, eco lamp mode. Turning on the 295 takes the noise floor of the room from 26dB to 33dB, measured at couch level by the SPLnFFT iPhone app. Much higher than the advertised 26dB noise. Factory defaults, with High Altitude Off, except Lamp Control set to Low, Contrast Enhancer to Low, and Contrast to 80.

This is bad, this is really bad as the projector is on a shelf right above and behind me when sitting on the couch. And I like to watch movies in a quiet environment... Any ideas to try? Or should I just send this unit back?

Thanks!

Make sure you set your HDMI port in the menu to "enhanced" as it defaults to "standard", which cannot pass 4K 60 HDR. Then in the xbox it has an option to test your connection. If your cable is good enough you will get checks on all the green boxes. If not, only some. Most issues are cable related.

Audio: Anthem mrx720 running 7.1.4, McIntosh MC-303, MC-152, B&W 802d3 LR, B&W HTM1D3 center, B&W 805d3 surround, B&W 702S2 rear, B&W 706s2 x 4 shelf mounted for atmos, 2 sub arrays both infinite baffle: 4x15 fi audio running on behringer ep4000 + 4x12 fi audio running on 2nd ep4000.

If you really like it otherwise, building a hush box would not take to much effort, then it would be even quieter then the Panasonic was, build it big enough and you can use it down the road when you decide to update again.

I am wondering if maybe it's a hardware problem... Any chance other owners on this forum could measure the noise level before and after turning on their projector? Just to check if my numbers are normal...

Thanks!
