Question Best options around $6k for very large theater? (w/ PICS)

Hey guys, helping a friend upgrade his theater. It's a very big theater with a 200" screen, I know something this big would call for a lot of light and really need a high-end projector, possibly $10k-$20k. But he currently has a 10y/o Sony 1080p with 900lumens so any upgrade will be great! Screen is 200" diagonal, projector is 30ft away, seating is at 18ft.

Currently I'm looking at:

Optoma UHZ65 (worried it's not bright enough at just 3000 lumens)
Optoma 4K550 (5000 lumens but low 5000:1 contrast compared to the UHZ65)
Epson Pro G7905 (7000 lumens with 50,000:1 contrast, worried this is not 4k, a little pricey)
Panasonic PT-RZ570BU (5200 lumens, 20,000:1 contrast, not 4k, older)

Honestly, if your friend is not sensitive to RBE from DLP units I would recommend to take a look at BenQ LK990. (Especially if he doesn't need any motorized functions)

Just installed the LK970 in a smaller HT 16' x 21'. Can watch in ECO mode (normal mode is too bright for my space!!) with all lights on with hardly any wash out on a 106" screen. Paid around your friend's budget and would believe it would work great in his space. Image is fantastic on everything I've watched so far on this Projector.

A comercial grade projector is what you need in a room like that. Look for a used Christie DHD800. You can find it brand new as well for about 15K.

I would not worry about 4K for this room and seating distance. HDR support would be nice, but if your seating is 30' from the screen you won't really be able to resolve 4K anyway.

Seating would is about 18ft right now and i think will be moved back to 20ft soon. Would this change things with 4k then?

I was really thinking that would be the project, either the 970 or 990 seemed to fit all the needs. But I think the budget has now just decreased to $3500 or maybe $4k. Any other projectors for movie watching in this price range that are also laser and have high lumen count? When I started searching quite a few options began popping up, I'll put some below, but I couldn't find a 4k option in this price range. Any suggestions or advice would be great!

Closeout lk970 is gonna be your best 4k high lumen value

If you need under $3.5k there is the 5000 lumen 1080p laser Optoma ZH510T-B

Thanks a lot! I'd love to grab the lk970 but cheapest I see is $6400 and I don't think it's possible to get that anymore since I picked up a Polk LSiM705/706/703 set from Adorama on sale recently. Got a fantastic deal but it's severely cut my budget down. The Optoma Z510T-B is looking pretty nice! Appreciate that recommendation! I wish I could understand what would make the Optoma Zh510T-B better than something like the NEC Np-PA653UL, most of the projectors in this $3500 range, including these two, seem to be marketed as "presentation" projectors and not necessarily "home theater" projectors.

Go with a LCD laser if your not gonna get a Lk970. With the LCD laser you're gonna gain better color brightness, better brightness uniformity, a better lens with more lens shift. And no rainbow effect that can affect guess. Also be aware that NEC you linked, doesn't come with a lens. And the Optoma is not better than the NEC. The NEC is 4k and HDR compatible with a 18gbps HDMI port, it's a 2x 1080p pixel shifter. Check projectorreviews.com for a review.

It's down below the main house as part of a western type town. The theater was made to be a 'replica of sorts' of the Birdcage Theater in Tombstone, Arizona (where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday lived etc etc).

These are some pretty heavily doctored pics a took a while back of the place:

You can slightly see the house up on the hilltop in the panorama pic

Thanks so much! I can't wait to check this out. I just applied for an account with BenQ, atm they won't show me the price on the website but BenQ said they'd be in touch/approve in about 48 hours, so probably sometime after Christmas. I really hope it's still available and I can get it for the New Year!

Have you looked at the throw charts for some of those projectors? Some of these will barely throw 200” @ 30’
IMO the first person who said commercial projector is the winner.
What about an Eoson Pro L1100U or better? 6,000 + lumens, choose the lens to fit your needs. Lasers. pew pew.

Anyone know if the LK970 could do 3D and HDR with future software updates? I need to get a projector that must be able to do both of those. Especially 3D. These blowout sales would be great if they do plan on such software updates because then it'll be like the new LK990

Highly doubtful. You’ll have to wait for the LK990 for those features.

I was told there is a new firmware out for the LK970, but it’s just bug fixes.

Do you still have the LK970? Maybe you can take a video with your phone, post it on youtube for everyone to see... i for one would love to see it.. these projectors are hard to find...

btw: It does look like the 990 is the exact same machine as the 970 with a software update...

I would look at the JVC RS640. I have the RS600 with an anamorphic lens and my screen is a 180" wide(195.4" dia) Seymour XD center. Its been almost 3 years now and it has worked well. You can get this model in the $6K range. Search Frederick Duex on here and my entire build with pics is there. My first seats are 16' second row is 23'
