Vava 4K UST pj announced

Quote:
Though it’s the newest kid on the tech block by far, having launched its first product as recently as 2015, it’s aggressively growing its product portfolio, which now includes a 4K laser projector.

So how can a newcomer expect to compete with the likes of LG, a brand that has established itself at the very highest levels of TV quality, and Hisense, a company that occupies third place worldwide in terms of TV sales? By offering a 4K, ultra-short throw (UST), HDR-capable laser projector that can pump out 2,000 ANSI lumens, with projected images sizes that can reach 150 inches. Oh, and then there’s the price: $3,500. Not bad for a laser projector that also packs a 30-watt Harmon Kardon DTS-HD sound system and an Android 7.1 OS — though not Android TV. It even has an interesting safety feature: It will dim the intensity of the laser light when it senses someone approaching the unit, so as to avoid unintentional eye damage.

Though the Vava uses commercial laser tech known as ALPD 3.0 (short for Advanced Laser Phosphor Display) with a DLP chip, it can’t quite match Hisense’s impressive color gamut capabilities or brightness, which exceed all of the current video standards. Not that it’s reasonable to expect that it would. There’s no way a $3,500 unit could keep up with a triple-laser model that’s expected to cost as much as $16,000. In fact, the Vava falls significantly short of Rec. 2020, the color gamut spec used by most 4K HDR TVs, falling back on the much older Rec 709.

Though its resolution and brightness are both modern, its color palette is stuck somewhere in the 1990s. It’s an unfortunate downside to what otherwise looks to be an good projector, at a good price.

Rec709 sucks at that price point, maybe it'll come down quickly.

They’ll have too. It has less brand recognition, less color gamut range and lower brightness than the Optoma P1. I can’t think of one reason to spend $500 more than the Optoma P1 and maybe the LG HU85L(msrp still unknown)

Not sure if it's a prototype unit but it's relatively small.

Is Vava a US sister company of Xiaomi? The logo on the remote and projector is the same.

Good catch! Not sure, not much information online regarding the company. I wouldn't doubt it. If so, then the price point could be relatively low to start with but availability may be limited to China only (unless they do the Walmart deal again like they did with their 1080p UST PJ).

From my competitive research, Vava is a division of RAVPower, the power bank manufacture. The unit looks very identical to the Xiaomi in terms of design and IO layout.

Website is live!

They have the projector, a car dash cam and a home security cam.

Thanks @Tuan for the info. Not sure if you happened to watch the video I posted above but that is definitely a Xiaomi remote!

What are the chances that this uses the same guts as the 4k, HDMI 2.1 version of Xiaomi's projector and not the 1080p version.

I think the remote looks different than Xiaomi's new model and that leads me to believe this is closer to the 1080p fauxK version.

EDIT: According to their website this Projector has 8 point keystone correction (just like the 1080p Xiaomi model) meanwhile according to some Chinese articles the 4k version only has 4 point correction.

So no guarantee but my vote is leaning this more towards the 1080p model.
Take this with a grain of salt since nobody has reviewed this model and until then this is all speculation.

many of those brands can be traced back to inovel which makes ust for the longest time for the Chinese market.
i'm betting they are the OEM for these other brands, vava included, since there is an Inovel Xiaomi version

Website is progressing...new details coming forth.

What's really wild is they use the same 'scene' (actor, room, etc) as LG uses in their ads! 😮

Still sucks it's only Rec709 and it's way overpriced.

What concerns me is how the order website they use has shady tactics. For example it has a timer that counts until midnight and they imply that if you don't put $1 down before then that you will have to pay $1000 more.

I fell for it and you can imagine how I felt the next day when I did not receive my email with more information and the timer had reset...

What website are you trying to order from? The official site that I linked above doesn't even have an order page for this projector...mostly because it's probably still in the planning phases.

It's $1 to reserve the vip kickstarter price @$2500.

There was nothing special with this projector that warranted a price of over $2500. I didn't put the dollar down because next year, similar projectors will be under $2500. I'll rather donate the money to them.

Can’t say for sure, but half of the the gadgets on Kickstarter are rebranded either Chinese goods, vaporware or both. I would wait and see if Xiaomi releases this in the US on their own. You’d likely save money bypassing a rebranding.

Honestly the main reason I put the $1 down is so that I can get more information or maybe even a contact to ask a few detailed questions. So I saw the $1 well spent in regards to that. Sadly I have not received a single email so most likely I was scammed, oh well losing $1 is not the end of the world and thanks to https:// privacy .com/join/348LV I used a disposable credit card that I burned after the order.

So it is not like they can use my CC information for illegal purchases.

I don't really have an issue paying the $1 but I feel that we may see other options by next year at this price. LG has a UST 4k projector at a 3k price and they drop quick. I'm sure by this time next year LG's UST can be purchased for around $2k.

Where did you see LG have UST projector at 3k? I'd like it to be 2k next year, but if looking at their current laser non UST it hasn't dropped that quickly or that much, it was announced at 3k, but still above 2k price point.

Not for a couple of years at least, I would say.

Email just got sent out, so you have to reserve it if you want to get the link:

Hey everyone,

It's Allen from VAVA, and I'm just writing to let you know, before ANYONE else...

That the VAVA 4K Laser Projector will be LAUNCHING on Indiegogo next Tuesday, April 30th at 8 AM PT!

If you haven’t already, I recommend reserving your VAVA 4K Laser Projector for only $1.

Because on the first day of the campaign, we’ll be giving VIPs access to the best discount we will offer of 29% off retail before anyone else.

Remember, with the VAVA 4K Laser Projector you'll get:
4K UHD Resolution
Laser technology with bulbs that last up to 20,000 hours
Integrated Harmon Kardon speakers
Projects up to a 150" screen
Only needs to be 8.5" from the wall
Uses ALDP 3.0 to get movie theater quality video

Thank you, and talk soon,

- Allen

General Manager
VAVA

P.S. If you don’t upgrade to VIP, you’ll still get a launch discount, but it won’t be as big as the VIP discount!
