It's possible they took a bath (or much less profit) on the close out just to clear factory / warehouse space for the new models, and can't realistically keep both lines going profitably.

Mark,

Is there any technical reason that would keep JVC from announcing a similar HDR update to Xx90/RSx40 series?

Looking forward to the Sony announcements today, in particular the new 4K projectors that they introduce every year at CEDIA. Here's to hoping for a lower priced laser light engine!

You are going to be disappointed. Sony is not announcing new projectors.

Well that is too bad. I am disappointed. They had a nice run the last three years announcing new projectors at CEDIA. Those were the X75, X85, and X95 series. I guess now that they are all HDR no need for more products, but I do see the MSRP of the 885 has now been lowered to $19,999.

I realize this will be slumming it for you but if you are over at Epson I'd be interested to know if the 5050 and new 3800 use the same lens. I switched from a 5030 to 3700 three years ago and found for my viewing habits of 50% sports and 50% movies on a 150" screen in a man cave the 3700 was a way better fit just due to the extra lumens. I'd be interested to know outside of the manual lens and contrast ratio what other compromises there are between the 5050 and 3800. Thanks in advance Mike.

While you're slumming it at Epson , please ask them if they intend to sell the LS500 separately and not just as a package with screen

The challenge for JVC or any manufactor is, despite the hyperbolic commentary, the observable difference between models often fails to support the differentiated price point. Such that the 540/790, and more so the 640/990, would undermine sales of the newer, higher priced models. So the manufacturers take steps which are not in the best interests of end users.

The bright side, these previous models don't have an expiration date, and still make a terrific investment for the wise ht buyer.

Kind of expected though don't you think? I mean, JVC and Sony pretty much did all their updating last year.

I was expecting something new from Epson but that was a big disappointment. Epson seems to be content with just sitting on the 1080p e-shift and UST platforms. It seems like they could have a killer product if they just updated the LS10500 laser projector to true 4k LCoQ with better processing for tone mapping and HDR support.

I saw LG now had their 88" oled panels down to under $30K. Big drop from where they were two years ago around $180k. I wonder how long it will be before Sony and Samsung start killing the projector market with 140" microled displays under $20K.

Agreed, I went and my reaction was Meh. It was nice seeing the Envy and the new JVC firmware. However even on the audio side nothing amazing.

I was thinking when I left what a shame it is that my top three things I saw was:

1: JVC Firmware
2: MadVR Envy
3: QNap new box that has 4 slots with an additional 2 slots for SSD. Yup it made the top three. The rest was.....Meh

It was interesting how many dealers were in line at the Sony demonstration. You can tell they like that Socialistic Sure Pricing.

Home Theater: JVC RS2000, Stewart 120" 2:35 StudioTech 130, Panamorph DCR Lens, B&W 802 Nautilus, HTM1, 4-B&W 805's for surround, 4-Martin Logan 22's ceiling speakers ATMOS, 2- PB-16 Ultra Subs, Marantz 8802A, MacIntosh 8207 AMP and Proceed AMP 5, Panasonic 820, Apple TV, XBox One, HTPC with MadVR, Qnap NAS

What, firmware updates are not as exciting as new hardware? It was SLIM PICKINGS not just for projectors but also for AVRs. Yeah UST is having a little moment, curious if it'll gain traction.

I am sure the Denver Chamber of Commerce will accept your resume.

It isn't that bad, but you would think it is the greatest place ever the way Cedia keeps going back. I find it interesting that Cedia hasn't been east of the Mississippi since 2012 and will now have spent four of those years in Denver. Atlanta got a bad rap, because Cedia blamed the city on the decreased attendance instead of the oh I don't know the massive recession. Nashville is a booming city. Why not give it a try? Mike Garrett wouldn't even have to get on a plane.

Damn dude, you got the diarrhea issues again like you strangely enjoyed broadcasting to everyone here a few years back? You seem a little grumpy.

Fantastic because next year will see some new projectors unveiled I'm sure from both JVC and Sony so I will have plenty of incentive to go unlike this year. I'll most likely be replacing my x790 next year as well which makes having Cedia 20 minutes away in this awesome city/state exciting!

Hang in there though my friend! Your stomach issues will clear up eventually and your attitude will improve!

LOL, I make one off hand joke about diarrhea and that seems to be all you can remember.

And I do find it humorous that for someone who seems to be a HT enthusiast could not even be bothered to drive 20 minutes to attend the show.

It was more the pride you seemed to have letting us all know which made it weird and memorable. At least your known for something though!

If there was something I wanted to check out, I would have gone this year. I've hit 4 or 5 of them here since 2006 when the RS1 hit and all those times I had something I wanted to see and this year I didn't. Simple as that.

Can answer already. Different lens, much smaller housing, so more noise and lower contrast.

Such that the 540/790, and more so the 640/990, would undermine sales of the newer, higher priced models. So the manufacturers take steps which are not in the best interests of end users.

The bright side, these previous models don't have an expiration date, and still make a terrific investment for the wise ht buyer.
If this was true, then JVC would not be asking us, what we thought of making another run of 540's. I don't think it will happen, but it is a possibility.
