I need for an advice please

Hi everyone I would like to share a doubt with you all hoping to receiving good advice. I own a JVC RS25 and I happy with it. A friend of mine on my suggestion just bought a used JVC HD990. We tested and it looks great. A first sight I can tell better than my 25. Now my friend would be happy to make an exchange. I should pay $100 of difference on the basis of each projector price. I am not sure for only a reason: the 990 smells smoke from the fan obviously due to its usage in a smoking environment from the former owner. I am wondering if: is there any possibility to erase that smell? And the smoke already absorbed could be dangerous for the electronic components now? My projector has 500 hours my friend’s one 750. But I have a brand new lamp in the event required. Any info or suggestion would be really appreciated. Thanks you

No way youre ever getting a smoke smell out of it. It could effect the elctronics as well as smoke leaves physical material built up which is why it smells. google air filters in smoking enviroments to see it browns the dust

Thank you. So I feel frustrated because I really want to get that 990. Any suggestions? Should I keep mine. I don’t know.

Electronics aren't really affected by cigarette smoke.
Unless a unit has been used as an ashtrays, smoke alone can't do any permanent or serious damage.
It will just get dirty faster.

Hours wise, 750 is really low and any dust should be limited to the external.
If you happen to notice any considerable dust buildup clogging its exhausts, then it might be useful to perform a more thorough cleanup, inside out. However, if you don't feel comfortable with it, leave that to a qualified technician.

Regarding which unit is best for you that depends on what you are after.
To me, the two units look identical, apart from the published contrast which is never a figure I personally take serious.
Furthermore, I've never owned a DILA unit so I have no opinion on them.

The only thing I could comment regarding using any of these two units, would be that they seem to be a bit low on brightness, for today's standards. Of course, you already own one and you are aware of the fact, so you might be absolutely fine with it.

But judging from my own needs, I'd try finding something with a published figure of 2000 uncalibrated lumens or above.

I have a friend JVC dealer in Italy who could clean it properly. So should I get the 990? I am tempted!

That depends entirely on your specific needs.

If it helps any, I edited my above post adding my thoughts on those two units based solely on their published figures and my own needs.

But as I said, I have zero practical experience with those particular units.

I would not do it. These are basically ten year old projectors. They still throw a great image, but the value isn't there. You would be better off using that $100 for a newer used model. As a point of comparison, AVScience has a b-stock 440 for around $1800. That is the previous generation model and chassis. A quick look on ebay and a RS46 is around $500. That is a couple of years newer than your model and will give a big step up in performance.

Yes but the 46 doesn’t offer a complete CMS and you would need a video processor if you intend properly calibrate it. I calibrated my RS25 with almost perfect results under every point of view. It would be simple impossible with the 46. And the image is much softer too. I think I should spend not less $2000 to have a model with a better or equal PQ on 2d. I am still fighting with the idea RS25 or 990? I am planning to get a 4k one in a year or two.

I just threw out the 46 as a point of reference.

If you are going 4k next year, then again I am not sure I would bother with the 35.

Thank you. I understand your point and it sounds reasonable. I was only curious about to know if there were concrete differences between the two projector and how the smoke smell could influence the choice

Cigarette smoke is quite invasive, gets into deep places and ends up collecting other airborne contaminants to itself.

The smell is bad, but not nearly as problematic as what is inside causing the smell.

Cleaning up optical based electronics exposed to cigarette smoke? I'm not a fan. Maybe if the item was free with little or no risk if cleanup fails.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank for you kind reply. So according to your opinion it is quite risky trying to clean the optics and electronics? In other words if I want the projector I have to handle with the bad smell unavoidably? From another point of view: would it be worth to exchange my RS25 in perfect conditions with this HD990? I only tested the latter for few minutes and it looked to me great and slightly better than my 25, slightly but better especially in terms of sharpness. I am trying to come to a right decision considering all the aspects. Thank you

Do you have access to test swab the proector in a few places? Test to see how much brown goo you can collect from a mild swabbing. Look at the air filter area, pull the filter and check just inside. Maybe the contamiation is less than the smell might suggest.

Best case might be an air filter replacement and a cleaning of the air intake vent fins, being enough to fix the problem.

Personally, I do not buy smoke contaminated products. Imho it hurts resale value, but maybe if this projector was going to be a throw away when you're done with it, resale might not be a consideration.

I know getting the hand picked performance upgrade of the rs35/hd990 for just $100 is hard to resist. But there is always the chance you ended up with an rs25 with near hand picked performance.

I think I'd keep the pristine rs25. Tough choice you have. Look forward to hearing what you decide.

Thank you all for such kind assistance. The story of the purple dust it sounds so familiar! Few months ago I bought a RS48 from eBay at a very good price. I love that model that I have already owned when it came out the market five years ago. The projector arrived and seemed to work properly. Perfect and I say perfect convergence incredible focus. Everything seemed be fine. Suddenly I realized that a sort of rhombus or ‘diamond’ appeared almost in the middle of the screen any time a white/bright object stayed on a black/dark background. I changed the lamp but still there. I called a friend of mine JVC dealer for 20 years now and he said it’s probably due to smoke and suggested to check the fan and I have seen a mess, see attachments. And of course an unbearable smell of smoke that I haven’t mentioned so far. I returned the projector and I was refunded by eBay. Smoke damaged that spectacular projector. That’s why I am very careful now about this HD990. A) I don’t know if I will ever be able to erase bad smell B) who knows if the smoke inside will someday affect the optics or the electronics? Now it’s fine and it works flawlessly. Actually very very good convergence and great focus. My actual RS25 have a good focus and convergence, almost perfect on the sides but less in the center. It’s a strange dilemma.

And I want to post some screenshots after my last calibration with 2.4 gamma. I know that from pics isn’t possible to judge but just to have an idea of my actual RS25. Of course in person is much better!

Is there anyone experienced about the HD990 RS35? And I would really appreciate any opinion about pics I posted if compared to the average RS25 picture quality. Thank you!

Here is a nice review and comparison. You can also read comparisons to some other contemporary models.

Thank you for posting the comparison, very informative.? I am glad to read my same impressions: a very close overall picture quality but the 35 is clearly sharper with a perfect alignment. Now the question is: this better sharpness would worth the exchange with my 25 considering that this 35 unit smell tobacco and probably needs a professional cleaning? Any suggestions is more than welcome
