Worth the upgrade from 5040UB --> JVC NX5/NX7 or Wolf PJ??

I am struggling to justify the upgrade. I see my 5040UB picture and it looks great with regular Blu-Ray discs but struggles with the 4k eshift obviously.

I do really want a native 4k PJ but I am struggling to wrap my head around the cost vs benefit here. I am pretty set on a JVC projector and the new firmware update for HDR.

At my local shop they showed me a Wolf Projector that was at the same pricepoint as the JVC NX7 and it looked fantastic. I cannot remember the model # off the top of my head but it was 2400 lumens and did not have lens shift which should be ok for me.

I am also looking to upgrade my screen which Plan to start with first. I DO see the added benefit of upgrading from my pure white Silver Ticket budget screen. I am planning to go with a zero edge 1.2 Slate around ~143" This is not cheap either but it will look badass and also make a noticeable difference to my existing setup.

Anyone else go through this and any opinions would be great!? What should I do

Awesome looking space. I had the 5040 before I upgraded to my Epson 6050. More detail, better contrast and much more dynamic HDR than my 5040 which had been calibrated by Jeff Meier of Accucal. Only you can decide whether true 4K would make a noticeable difference at your seating distance.

I went from the 5040 to the nx5 and it was defiantly an improvement. The Epson is brighter, but everything else is better with the nx5. My room is completely dark.

Wolf takes other manufacturers projectors, modifies them and sell at a much higher price point. Wolf modifies several JVC projectors, but anything from wolf that beats the performance of an RS2000/NX7 would cost about double what the JVC would cost.

Chad... great space!

Do you favor the room's image performance more for superbowl events or movie nights? If party events, I'd echo Skylar's 6050 recommendation, which would still be very good for movies.

I love what you did with your 2nd row. It gives me some ideas for superbowl this season, now that we cleared out the back of our HT space.

Awesome theater. At what distance do you sit and do you notice a significant difference in resolution from your 5040?

first row is 12 ft, so projector is 14ft on 120” screen. I can notice a slight difference at that distance. At second row 16ft not much difference and 3rd row can’t tell. Had my 5040 for 2 months.

Good question, i sold my 5040 a few months back, now using a small temp Epson PJ (in my sig) and was thinking of the nx5/nx7 but not sure if it will light up my 160 inch Slate 1.2 screen.

Thinking of the Epson 5050/6050 but not sure. i am leaning more towards a native 4k like the JVC.

maybe someone who did the upgrade can let us know.

Thanks for the quick reply. So what specifically is better about the NX5? My guess would be black levels, contrast and HDR.

What is your source now?

If you are not using madvr, that would be a huge upgrade to your existing setup! I'm running an Epson 5040 with MadVR and it makes HDR amazing.

You'll need an htpc for madVR now, or you can buy the ENVY processor when it hits the marketplace soon.

Correct, blacks, contrast and hdr. Once the new firmware is released it will even be better, close to madvr people have mentioned.

I really want an NX7 especially with the DTM firmware update that is coming. Just can't justify the price . I know it can be found for less than the new $8999 MSRP but my 6050 throws such a great image at less than half the price. I will wait for a sub $10K 3000 lumens true 4K laser projector. I realize I may be waiting quite a while. LOL.

Even if it is only 25% as good as madVR for many people that will be more than enough. It is like getting a new projector from what I have heard. For free!!! JVC did right by their loyal owners.

Yes, I totally agree. JVC owners are in for a teat!

That's pretty much all epson did when they upgraded from the 5040 to the 5050 - let's toss in better hdr software and call it a new model and charge full price again.

I think there was a little more upgrade from the 5040 to the 5050 but agree with the spirit of your post. The 5050 was mostly about the improved HDR performance.

I went from a 5040UB to an RS-520, so a couple generations older than what you're looking at.

The JVC is an upgrade across the board. Colors, motion, HDR, and of course contrast are a noticeable step up. The contrast alone makes it worth it, IMO.

No need to be obnoxious about how happy you are. Maybe edit your previous post to make it more intelligible. I was actually trying to clarify.

That being said many people are also happy getting 80% of the performance of the RS2000 by buying a Epson 6050 for 40% of the price.

So you spent your money for a 5040. Did you tell your friends it was Eshift when they came over to watch movies and that it was much better suited for the boardroom? I think not.

Why be such a pompous jerk now. Just because you are so happy with your RS2000? There are always better projectors even for the guys who own the JVC RS4500. It is just a matter of how much money you want to spend to get better picture quality.

The more you spend the laws of diminishing returns starts to increase. Very glad you couldn't be happier. Except you will be when the DTM "thingy", as you put it, comes out via the firmware update. I assume you are not a videophile calling the most amazing firmware update ever, a thingy.

That's pretty much all epson did when they upgraded from the 5040 to the 5050 - let's toss in better hdr software and call it a new model and charge full price again.

I love it when the guy who started mouthing off in the first place, then tells me to take my medication. I understand your response. When faced with facts about how silly you sound it is best to just make ridiculous attacks. Have a blessed day.

Brightness is a concern. I do like the bright image. Glad to hear that you're happy with the upgrade. That is good news.

Yeah that is what I heard. Good to know. thanks.

I love what you did with your 2nd row. It gives me some ideas for superbowl this season, now that we cleared out the back of our HT space.
Thank you. We love it. the upgrade from 5040 to 6050 is not significant enough. I would just stick with what I have.
