Are projectors more popular in China? Seems like any new product gets revealed in China first.

Well at least the LG has a ridiculously short throw ratio of .19:1, three lasers which allows it to have no color wheel and virtually zero rainbow effect, dynamic tone mapping, HLG support and smart apps that actually work and support 4k. The BenQ has basically identical features to the Optoma P1 that’s out now for much less. BenQ is certainly going to have to lower their price if they want to sell any of these.

Don't understand the cost of these UST projectors. For the PQ of these DLP 4k projectors, I don't think they should cost more than a JVC RS1000/NX5.

Well, the BenQ(明基) does have one unique feature: a dust cover.
And it won't burn out as quickly as their pico cousins, according to the product manager.

Quite an interesting read, the interview.

I do like the design and the dust cover. I wonder if @sage11x can check with his BenQ rep, and find out if there is any intention to release these models in North America.

I find it bizarre that BenQ has not considered an entry for the Americas market. Especially given the obvious hype surrounding other USTs here. I get that the Chinese market is all hot to trot, but the level of competition there doesn’t lend well to an overpriced BenQ using the same DMD as the lesser costing CDM brands (that are pumping out better versions every 6 months no less).

The America’s market is desperate to find their UST champion, and I think BenQ has missed a real opportunity here.

I’m guessing they will release this in the the American markets. I can only think of a few projectors from BenQ that haven’t, and most of them are business models. Considering these are intended for home theater/entertainment I’m almost certain they will.

But at this price point, it will be DOA.

Yeah, I think everyone but Optoma and the Xiaomi are stubbornly trying to convince themselves that they can charge prices by the square inch if they just market them as “laser tv’s”. I’ve read so much marketing material that says basically “I know the price seems high, but think of how much a 120 inch television costs?”. Ignoring the fact that this is a projector with all the downsides, ease of installation, less brightness and contrast, less suitable in bright environments. Not to mention standard projectors with the same features can be had for half the price. I think once they’ve duped as many early adopters as they can, they’ll all be selling for much more reasonable prices.

No, he has a contact at BenQ and frequently receives early review units from BenQ.
