How to fix color artifact on Optoma ZK507?

I recently had an Optoma ZK507 installed with a 120” screen innovations slate .8 solo pro 2. The projector is extremely bright and it’s a great combination for my family/media room with a lot of ambient light. However, I’ve noticed an odd artifact at times, most noticeably when there is a really bright white image on the screen. The best way I can think to describe it is blotchy areas of red overlying the bright white area which move around while the video is playing. Adjusting the color gamut from cinema to native and the color temperature from warm to neutral does help but the overall image quality is noticeably worse. Also adjusting the red bias and gain does seem to affect it but I honestly don’t really understand what they do and don’t want to degrade the image. Has anybody seen this before? Any tips on a systematic way to approach it without degrading overall image quality? Attached are some examples. The worst I’ve seen it is on the Last Jedi UHD Blu-ray.

Well, looks almost like color wheel timing being off but as it is laser not sure it has a color wheel.. To determine if it is the projector of the screen, hold a piece of white printer paper up and see if you have the same colors on the paper as the screen. If it is the projector, I would send it back

I tried the printer paper, it’s not the screen. It’s laser but it still uses a color wheel. Does it make sense that it could be the color wheel if I can essentially make the artifact go away if I crank down the red gain and bias? Finally just got everything installed and finished up this week, would hate to have to send the projector back.

No experience with laser but with a standard DLP if the color wheel index timing is off it will create a posterized image on bright spots.. not normally multi colored but again no idea with a laser.
Good luck!

i had this after i sent my LK970 projector for firmware update, i thought its broken but the fix is pretty easy,

u need to get the service menu code for ur projector, there is a whole thread about it here, just ask for the one for ur model.

once in there u should find CW delay / PW delay , adjust those and ull remove any posterization like the one ur having , its just a mismatch in timing.

hope that helps u.

So I was able to get into the service menu and mess with the cw and pw delay. I moved them both all over the place but it didn’t fix the problem (was able to make the picture look much worse though). Admittedly I don’t know what I’m doing though so just tried different combinations of moving the values up and down. Any guidance on adjusting cw and pw delay would be greatly appreciated.

I did discover that the artifact appears to be limited to HDR mode/content. I don’t know if that means it’s more or less likely to be due to a timing mismatch.

Have you tried different chroma or bit depth settings in the player? I believe uhz65 has problems with some combinations.

mine needed around 10points back and it started clearing up , keep in mind that it was happening in SDR/HDR , even i was noticing on my wallpaper on my PC , but ur saying urs is only in HDR that means it is not alignement issue.

I have not tried that but I notice the artifact from my UHD blu-ray and my Apple TV 4K. It is more noticeable on the blu-ray, however. I’ll give it a shot, thanks.

Player is Sony UBP-X800M2. On the projector I can switch off hdr and the artifact goes away. When the projector is receiving hdr signal and hdr is turned on on the projector there are only 2 picture modes “hdr” and “hdr 2” and the artifact is present on both.

So its probably an issue with the tone mapping in the projector, i had the Sony X800 player in the early 4k hdr days, it had an option to always output SDR even for HDR movie, try it if u can and see if the problem would still be there, i highly recommend if u can get a an HTPC with madVR to use its dynamic tone mapping, u wont need the hdr mode in the projector and it ll give u a way superior image.

I finally figured it out. The projector does not play well with 4:2:2. It does fine with 4:4:4 and 4:2:0. Problem is that my Integra drx 2.3 receiver is putting 4:4:4 sources out at 4:2:2, even though it is supposed to be capable of 4:4:4, and I can’t find anywhere in the settings to change this. Thanks for your help guys, looks like it’s time for a receiver exchange.

Is it 60hz 10bit you are testing? Limit with current hdmi for 60hz 10/12bit is 4:2:2.
