Just got back from spending LOTS of time with the incredibly nice and professional fellows of JVC. What a display they had. The RS1 was next to the Sharp 20000. Notes coming up as I post.

It was on a 2.35:1 Studiotek 130 in a light controlled room with all black fabric. Hardly any light intrusion. To sum up the picture: EXCEPTIONAL. Contrast rate was POSTED as 15000:1 and some pre-production models are testing at 17000:1
It was quite bright, but the movie chosen was dark: Chronicles of Riddick via HDMI from Tosh HDDVD. As pristine a picture as I have ever seen. Sharp as can be. This was next to the Sharp 1080P 20k unit. Picture to me was better on this RS1. More punch, warmer colors, but Sharp was phenomenal too. They can probably each be tweaked to within indistinguishable parameters of each other. They showed the star field in pitch black to compare contrasts, and it was clear the JVC could produce brighter stars within a darker space field. So better contrast:-)
Colors are fantastic. What can I say, I owned the NEC XG 85LC, then the Marantz S3, then Sony Ruby and this will be my next projector. It is state of the art in my opinion. I can't believe the picture we can buy for under $ 5k.

Was wondering if you know what the throw range would be for a 106" screen? Also I noticed it does not ship until feb. will it include hdmi 1.3. Thanks for the help.

I am not very good with throw calculations, but that number is close enough to my set up. I can achieve a 106" diagonal 16 X 9 within 10.6 feet I believe. I think at 10 feet, Tom said I can get 88" wide. So at 10.6, I can get closer to 106". Sorry for the painfully untechnical answer to a scientific question.

It is a 1.4-2.8x throw (simply take your width and multiply it by those 2 numbers).

I have to say the JVC 10k unit showing U571 HD DVD with anamorphic lens was truly out of this world. They tell me that it is only better in the color accuracy department. The brightness and contrast ratio of RS1 is superior. So we are in for a real treat when anamorphic is set up on this puppy.

Yes there are pros to the HD10k, but at the much higher price, it will make it a tougher sale.

If the only thing the HD10K does better is the color I saw, and the RS1 has a brighter picture and better contrast, I'd clearly choose the RS1 at any price. The extra wow may have been the lens set up.

I wonder if Meridian/Faroudja is going to get this also and have MR. Phelps do his magic? I can see it being at the next CEDIA hot rodded. This will keep Faroudja in the game. These are exciting times in video.

that's actually a small screen for a 2.35:1 setup. So that's why it was bright.

this projector sounds really good. I was thinking the Pearl but, not anymore. I'm wondering if someone that sees it can check for light spill around the actual picture. If they can zoom it idown a little bit so to check around the image easier?

Interesting that they used a 2:35 set-up. I'm thinking of going that route - but w/ a 110" wide. Guess they didn't demo any 1:85 material.
