Thanks, now it does recognize 720p as native resolution, but do you think it's possible to make it the highest resolution? I mean windows/nvidia would detect 720p as the maximum resolution, then I add 1080p later as a custom resolution, because I guess it's the only way to get downsampling working, correct me if you know anything about it.

Hi Tulli,
I don't know if I have an issue or not based on your statement above. The HDMI on my HTPC is running on Nvidia Geforce 425M, and is only showing 2 channels possible in HDMI audio. The setup is:
HTPC --> (HDMI) --> Samsung UE55D8005 --> (S/PDIF) --> AVR


I am in the process of changes my AVR setup, and wants to be prepared when it arrives.
My new AVR will be the Sonos Playbar, which only has one S/PDIF input connector. Therefore I want every device to connect to the TV and then from the TV to the Sonos Playbar.


Do you suspect this will work if my HTPC is just sending compressed DD5.1 to the TV or will I need a EDID override driver for the Samsung TV?

You'll need a EDID override just to enable AC3.

Just finished my new Windows 8.1 Haswell HTPC build (ASUS Z97I-Plus / i7-4790K) replacing my old (N54L / AMD HD 6450) build. When I have turned on my amp and TV, I don't get DTS-MA HD audio formats. Never had this problems with the old build.

Tried building an EDID override and test-signed it, to get it working in Windows 8.1. Still no DTS-MA when my TV is turned on. Bios, drivers, amp firmware everything is up to date. Strange thing, the TV EDID seems to have all the formats. (Using PowerDVD 14 I only can chose non-decoded HD audio when my TV is off, windows audio device shows just the standard digital formats when the TV is on)

Maybe I missed something else?

Hello there,

could anyone help me with the following problem?

I got this problem with my Monitor => DVI => PC => HDMI => AVR => TV setup. With my Onkyo 604 and my Pio 529 it's like that:

- I'm working on my PC monitor. Turning on the Onkyo/Pio, my picture goes to TV instead ONLY if I set the coressponding output on the AVR. For example, it's possible to watch chromecast via AVR on my TV while working on my PC monitor.

With the Sony it's like that:

- it grabs away my PC signal as soon as the HDMI cable is connected, even when the PC output AVR => TV is NOT selected
- my DVI monitor blanks
- I have to manually go into windows settings to set my Nr. 1 monitor every time if I want to have the picture back on my DVI monitor
- with this setup, it's NOT possible to watch chromecast via AVR and work on my monitor at the same time - I need to plug the HDMI cable from the Sony AVR so that I get the picture back on my TV

Any ideas?

Newbie Needs Help plz Tulli

Hi, just found out that this @#@$ called EDID is what's causing my nightmares.....and you guys seem to know your stuff..


Short and sweet:
*Nvidia 750 card to HDMI splitter with only Rotel receiver in splitter = 7.1 audio ( Monitor shows as Rotel)
*As soon as I plug in my other TV's into splitter = 2 Channel Audio only.. Monitor is now picked up as FCT-tv in windows and in HDMI audio device configuration only 2channels shown....
Question: How to I trick Windows / NVidia card into outputting 7.1 ALWAYS...

Monitor showing as FCT-TV EDID override, but still only 2-channel.
Did restart and all...
Moninfo also shows LPCM 2-channel though....


Any ideas. ?

After installing the override check the supported formats for the HDMI audio devices. All audio formats supported by the AVR should be listed. Otherwise there's a problem with the installation.

Help needed, after googling for a few weeks and trying some edid overrides from this thread I still cannot get 5.1 sound from my nivida gtx 650 ti graphics card to my Sony ht-as5 receiver, which is then connected to my Sony kld-46hx853. I am connecting with HDMI from graphics card to receiver and HDMI from receiver to TV. I have all the latest nvidia drivers installed. In windows I just get the generic monitor and 2 channel stereo in audio settings for nvidia high definition sound. What info do I need to post so that some kind soul can help me get dd and DTS sound, please.

The ht-as5 is home-theater system, not an "AVR". As all HTS's it can only accept 2 channels of uncompressed audio (hence the windows limitation), or DD/DTS compressed audio over the HDMI-in.

Thanks Tulli, you are a legend. So I guess I need to buy a receiver and a subwoofer then! Any suggestions of something cheap that would work with my ht-as5 speakers? Never thought setting up a home cinema and htpc was such hard work lol.

Get any AVR capable of at least decoding HD audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master). This one, for example.

You don't need to buy an AVR if all you want is 5.1 and no HD audio. The problem to be solved is the encoding of the audio stream to compressed 5.1 DD or DTS in the HTPC. Depending on the application (gaming?) it could be just a matter of properly setting up the video player of your choice.

There's even a hack to get live DD (or DTS?) encoding with realtek onboard audio adapters (I posted a link recently in the other EDID thread).

I have the brazilian version of the x900 sony tv, x905a 4k TV.

I've worked with EDID a thousand times but for some reason I can't dump this TV EDID.

The reason that I want to dump it is that according to my tests using my HDMI 1.3 receiver and setting the image to 4k will give black screen on the receiver but it will still use the audio portion of the signal.

The problem is, when using a hdmi splitter it sets to the receiver limitations. If I could get this full EDID I could set the PC to 4k and still get surround sound.

Any ideas how I could dump it? I've tried Moninfo, EDID dumper, LW Matrix controller, EDID Manager, all without success.

Onkyo TX-SR674

Great info reading through the thread. Good instructions. Just wondering if I need to create my own .inf file or will some of your other Onkyo files will work on for my receiver Onkyo TX-SR674 setup

I created a .inf file PC (using NVIDIA GeForce 550ti card) - HDMI - Onkyo TX-SR674 - HDMI- Samsung (DLP). Great picture, but no audio.

The Nvidia doesn't recognize the HDMI for the digital audio now. Open audio settings and indicates no audio plugged in, everything grayed out, but Im cabled HDMI straight to the receiver.

Bad install?
re-install and reboot a few times.

Before I did created the .inf, I can get audio, through receiver, but no picture. Nvidia control panel shows receiver connected and digital audio enabled via HDMI. Once the overide completed, no go

Weird.

Suggestions. Thanks

Because I need LPCM 5.1 and this won't work using optical, only HDMI. If I send just video using HDMI I can't send uncompressed audio for surround in games.

I did some testing and dumped the edid, and without any modification I've installed it. It works, 4k options and everything.

But when I try to add the audios, DTS-HD, Dolby +/true hd, LPCM etc. It looses a few options like [email protected]

Do you think you could give it a shot and add the audios to this edid?

I'll ship you a beer if this works ;D

I meant two separate HDMI connections by using either a DVI/HDMI or DP/HDMI connector, with the AVR in extended mode with no HDMI out.

Doesn't [email protected] require HDMI 2.0?

It does but nvidia did some tricks using chroma subsampling. You can get [email protected] with 4:2:2.

If I use Dvi to hdmi for video and the hdmi output for audio I believe windows will set 2 displays.

Wouldn't it cause performance impact on games? This seems like running 2 monitors.

I don't believe it's possible to pass audio only with hdmi.
I'm also not sure if dvi supports 4k.

I've searched for displayport adapters here and they don't seem to be sold around here. I would need to import those.

EDIT: It worked!
Still I need to have windows as extended desktop for audio to flow to my receiver.
I'm not sure if that impacts the performance while playing games.

By the way, thanks for the idea of using 2 outputs. It seems, according to a few forums that this won't impact performance while playing. It will only use a little more video card ram while on idle.

How do i make AMD driver think my TV is a monitor? I thought I could do this by removing ability to support audio from the EDID but I assumed the driver would be reading EDID direct from the display..
does this thread mean i can override it somewhere for this purpose?

Reason I want to do this is recent AMD drivers (after 14.4) force HDMI mode if you're using a DVI>HDMI adapter to a TV. Before this it would always be treated as DVI unless you were using a proprietary AMD DVI>HDMI adapter. My TV is only suitable as a monitor when in DVI mode so I want to fix this

Removing the extension block (or just the VSDB descriptor in the extension block) should work. At least it did with older drivers. And of course, the trick of a generic DVI>HDMI adapter or DVI>HDMI cable also worked.

Other than that if your TV has a "PC mode" for 4:4:4 all you need to do in the driver is to set pixel format to RGB (or 4:4:4.).
