It will not. The HD audio causes most of these clients to require transcoding.

You are looking at a HTPC or a Shield to do what you asked.

Thanks. You saved me some trouble.
One of these days I'll set up a NUC-class PC with the embedded PMP.

I am trying to use my plex app on the xbox one x, which is connected to my denon receiver, everything that I play in the plex app, shows PCM, and not atmos or dts or truehd. When I play Netflix through xbox one x, I can see dolby atmos on my receiver for the shows that have dolby atmos.

That is working correctly. Also, the Atmos from Netflix isn't the lossless version from Blu-ray or UHD. Netflix Atmos (or any streaming site) uses it on top of DD+.

If you want Atmos, DTS or TrueHD you should look into getting a Shield or HTPC.

I thought Plex supported casting FLAC to Chromecast Audio? When I do that I see it being transcoded on the server. Mp3 direct plays as expected. I bough the Chromecast specifically to have lossless playback of my music and have connected it to my optical input.

Getting an error trying to play a file - An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app.

This happens on the shield and my plex server is a seperate server.

The file plays fine through the plex web interface as well as both Rokus upstairs.

Any ideas why the shield isn't playing any of my test files?

In all seriousness, you might want to check file permissions on the server. I've received that error before when new files were not being given the right permissions over the network share. Is it doing this with only one file or a series of them? Does anything work?

Could also be that your Shield is trying to force direct play on a file that it cannot decode for some reason (which shouldn't be a problem on the Shield from what I've heard).

Didn't think about the file permissions thing at since it would play from the web interface as well as the rokus but I will look at that tonight. Thanks!

Oh yeah only on new test files all other things work so that is why I thought it was odd but hey things happen.

I've been gettng the same error on my Nexus Player for the past several moths when I try to play any of the videos in the news section. I haven't bothered to do any troubleshooting since I don't really care if the news section works or not.

The Plex forums are moving to Discourse next month. I really don't like change but I hate how the current setup works.

I have several high res multi-channel flac files, the whole point having is they are lossless. Converting to AAC takes that away.

When I play a 2 channel flac it plays direct, but with the multi-channel file it converts to AAC. If I change the settings on the nVidea to force direct play, it either doesn't play at all or the audio keeps dropping out.

I CAN play the same files through DLNA over my blue ray player (so the files are good), but it won't work via plex and the shield wihtout converting.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Any updates on this. I recently upgraded my receiver and am looking for a reliable way to send it lossless audio, would especially like to play with some multi channel. I am worried that DLNA from the Plex Server will cause transcoding. I guess the first step is just to try it out. The other option is to send it to the plex app on my Roku tv, not sure that will pass the full audio either.

As long as you have Direct Play enabled on the Plex client on the Shield, it won't transcode. Lossless is no problem on the Shield or Plex.

Thanks. From what I've been researching the shield cannot output multi channel FLAC. Which is not a huge deal for me.

I read at one point the sample rate was being affected in 2.0 FLAC. 44.1 khz being changed to 48khz. I believe that is no longer the case. My shield comes in Friday so I can play.

I can’t seem to find a way to rip/transcode dolbyvision 4k movies....considering its transcoding vs direct play is it even realistic to get a full disk comparable Dolby vision hdr movie playing on plex?

If I missed something forgive me and appreciate any guidance or correction.

Tivo and shield for 4k without hdr or even dv doesn’t cut it for me. Will other plex options like lg tv oled or Apple TV 4kmspp work for this?

The only way to playback dual layer dolby vision rips (which is what UHD discs use) right now is on an oppo 203/205. On other devices like the Apple TV 4K those titles should play back in HDR10.

I am struggling with proving / testing 7.1 on my XBox One X through Plex.

I've validated that the issue is not my hardware because my PC will play the same 7.1 file correctly.

I went to the Plex forums this morning to look something up and discovered the new forum is online. I'm not sure when they switched it over but it might be a good idea to get familiar with it before you need to find something.

Thanks in advance. I`m new to Plex. Can anyone point me to the trick of installing Plex on WHS 2011. When it installed. I just get a gray screen. No place to input the code from my Shield. I`m stumped so far. Installed 3 times with the same results. It works fine on a windows 10 pc, but most of my files are on the server.

I ran Plex server on WHS 2011 a long time ago. I don't remember having any issues with Plex. Where are you seeing a grey screen?

If you are having trouble linking your Shield to your account try going to plex.tv and check to see if your account is signed in. If you aren't already signed in then sign in, then try visiting the activation website again. If you are already signed in try signing out and back in again, then try the activation website again.

Your post doesn't make much sense. Where is your Plex Server installed? If you are running the server on the Shield then you don't need Plex Server or Client on your WHS 2011. Just share the folders with your media to your Plex Server. The only reason you'll be needing to input a code is if you are trying to watch media on your WHS. Even then I think the code is an alternative to entering in your username and password directly.

I'm running Plex on Windows Server 2012 R2 with no issues. Bottom right hand corner of your screen in the task bar you should see the Plex icon. Right click it and scroll up to "Open Plex ..." - that will load the program where you can make any configuration changes you need.

I got an email for throwback pricing.... lot cheaper (half) of normal lifetime pricing.
Been thinking about a PASS for a while but have been on the fence.

Who finds it worth it and why?

mobile sync and music has really got me thinking

Thanks

I bought a lifetime Plex Pass back in 2013 when the price was $75. I had been freeloading for a few years and just wanted to support them. I usually donate to free software projects that I find useful.
