And whenever I pause, or rwd/ffwd, the receiver loses audio. This is very easy to see - e.g. play a movie rip with DD 5.1 audio track. Receiver shows 5.1ch input. Pause video. On receiver there is no input and it switches back to its default mode. Resume play. It again acquires audio and goes back to 5.1 mode, result is you lose 2-3s of audio.

Receiver is Onkyo 676, via HDMI.
I have never seen that with my Shield (or any client). Im running a Denon receiver. You have passthrough set to HDMI?

That's because you don't have an onkyo receiver. It resets with a click when you pause and it loses audio and again when it starts and receives it again.

Video: JVC RS4500 135" screen in pure black room no light, htpc nvidia 1080ti.
Audio: Anthem mrx720 running 7.1.4, McIntosh MC-303, MC-152, B&W 802d3 LR, B&W HTM1D3 center, B&W 805d3 surround, B&W 702S2 rear, B&W 706s2 x 4 shelf mounted for atmos, 2 sub arrays both infinite baffle: 4x15 fi audio running on behringer ep4000 + 4x12 fi audio running on 2nd ep4000.

So you see it too? And I'm not imagining things. I posted about this on other forums and am always told its something I haven't setup correctly in settings etc. Is this a known Onkyo problem then?

I got an email from Plex today. They are making some sort of change to their guide data delivery and want everyone to update their server to version 1.16.1 within the next 10 days to avoid losing guide data. I just got done updating the Plex server on my Shield to the latest version. It's 1.16.0. Good job Plex. Tell everyone to update to a version that isn't available. SMH.

"We're making major changes to how guide data is curated and delivered in Plex. Beginning on June 30, 2019 Plex will require Plex Media Server version 1.16.1 to maintain EPG data and overall Live TV & DVR functionality. Users that don't upgrade by the above date will begin losing guide data starting July 1, 2019."

Version 1.16.0.1226 was just taken out of beta and released. Didn't get any email about it, but I'm using the beta versions.

When Emby migrated from SchedulesDirect to Gracenote directly there was no transition required. The DVR just worked as it always had for a very long time.. With multiple tuners, real and m3u, and multiple guide sources.

I logged in yesterday and the 1.16 server update notification was there. Did the update and the guide data automatically refreshed. Everything seems fine. Didnt notice any big change.

IF you use LiveTV/DVR it's a disaster like it was back in December/January.

Look more closely, most of the guide data is now generic quips of what the program is and not what the episode is. It's a guide now, not an extended program guide.

Also the tuning issues (slow to tune and fail to tune( are back from earlier in the year and a host of other problems.

Settings were lost, recording schedules were broken and it's unclear that it can detect new versus repeat given the missing data.

That's just the "big ticket items". There are a host of other things broken as well.

Thanks. I guess I need to look more closely. This time of year, I dont use the tuner and DVR so much. I did do a spot check. I have 2 Android TV clients. NV Shield and Sony Z9D. Both seem fine and tune as they always have. I checked PMP in Windows and also good. Web client (Chrome) looks problematic. Will tune sometimes and not others. I see what you mean about the guide data being more generic. As far as recording, this time of year again, not much going on so will have to look at that

MY MAIN USE CASE is watching NFL games timeshifted ~ 1hr to skip by commercials. This has to work or I am a very unhappy user. I have something recording now and will test that and report back

....Aaaaand DVR Timeshift is broken. First 30 sec skip works. 2nd skip freezes the program. How in the world does replacing guide data provider break the DVR? I can understand it affecting the guide, but why the DVR? They better fix it by NFL season.

Did you get version 1.16.0? They said 1.16.1 is the version needed for the new guide data.

Thanks. I just checked my Shield and it shows no updates available so I'm stuck on 1.16.0.1226 until it hits the play store. At least I know 1.16.1 is out there.

I moved from Shield to a Win10 microPC awhile back for PMS. Mostly to improve liveTV/DVR support which WAS better......

I did some major hardware shuffling over the past couple of years. My central WMC/Plex server was an i7-4770 in a 15-bay 4U server chassis. It worked great for several years but Plex was getting used less and less. When Plex usage dropped to just a couple of hours per month I decided to pull the plug on the server. I wanted a quieter and lower power Plex server since most of the time it was running without being used, and with WMC extenders paired to the server it would not go to sleep. I took the extenders out of service and replaced them with separate HTPCs. At least those can be turned off or go to sleep when not in use. I set up Plex server on my Shield and moved my media files to the network. Most of the HDDs I had in the server were shucked USB drives. I pulled the drives from the server and put them back in their enclosures, then put the USB drives on the network. After doing a major library cleanse I got all of the media that I wanted to keep to fit on 16TB of storage on my Asus Tinker Board, 10TB on my WD My Cloud NAS, and a single 4TB drive attached to the Shield. I swapped the i7 server internals into my old desktop PC case and I'm using that for my main desktop PC now. The old desktop PC internals went into a new Silverstone case, got a new SSD with a fresh Win7 install and is one of the HTPCs that replaced one of the WMC extenders.

The Lenovo 710Q tiny has an I5. I think it uses like 15W. I have a 1TB USB3 drive for DVR recording which doesnt use much. For longer term storage a have a 2 bay RAID 1 WD NAS. 6TB usable. It also uses ~ 15W. The liveTV/DVR was unreliable on the Shield. Sometimes it would fail to tune or record for no reason. Up until now, it has been great on the Win10 platform.

FWIW deleting and reinstalling the DVR did not fix the DVR Timeshift problem on Android TV.

A problem that you may also run into is your clients (of any type) may not be able to connect to the PMS. If so, delete them from the authorized devices and re register them.

Timeshifting a live recording has been broken for more than a year. Multiple threads open on the issue. "PLEX is looking into it"

Its been working very well for me with Android TV client (NV Shield) up until now. I watched NFL all last season with it without much issue at all. I dont really need it until next NFL season so I hope they fix it by then. If not, Im out and will move to something else.

Im not saying it was easy. To get it stable, moved from Shield to Win10 as the PMS (this was a very big improvement)
Sony Android TV client was a bit unstable. EXACT SAME Android TV client on the Shield was pretty flawless. Recent client update had the Sony TV just as good.

A commercial block in NFL is 2.5 min. Each click of the remote is a 30 sec FF skip. I could do a rapid 5x click on the remote and be by the commercials in an instant. Just hoping to get back to that.

At one point I tried an Apple TV. Plex client for liveTV/DVR was totally unusable/horrible. I cannot believe how bad some of the SW Plex puts out is.

From what I know, the shield hasn't yet received the "unified interface". It's still running the old stuff. ATV and ROKU and others began moving to the new UI in late 2018. I've always run on a Windows PMS. Right now the station icons are blinking on/off like a Christmas tree on my ROKU

Go buy that lotto ticket!

As of right now in July 2019, what is the best format to rip to for Plex? Both in terms of container and contents. Assume hard drive space is no concern. And I want the absolute best quality rips, ideally exact copies. And I have a good size collection of DVD's, Blurays, and 4K UHD discs I would like a to rip. Haven't counted them for a while but I'm guessing close to 400 total movies. Also a follow-up question, there is no way to preserve the menu when ripping for Plex, right? If there is a better thread to ask these questions, please point me there.
Thanks!

I back up the main movie from my discs using MakeMKV. It places the content into a (...drumroll....) MKV file. Doesn't convert / encode / transcode / modify the actual movie in any way. You can choose which audio tracks to keep, which to leave out, and same with subtitles.

As far as I know, there's no good way (any way?) to keep the menus when using Plex. But if storage really isn't an issue, then you can backup the whole disc to an ISO or keep the bluray folder structure and maintain the menus. Store them in a different folder. Store the MKVs in a folder that Plex can access. Best of both worlds.

Movies: Epson 5050 / Marantz 7010 / OPPO-103
Streaming: nVidia Shield / Roku Ultra / Chromecast Ultra
Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 40 (LR), Motion 50XT (center), Motion 2 (surrounds)
Server: Ubuntu 18.04, i7-8700 CPU
HTPC: Win10 Pro 64-bit, i5 750 Radeon HD 5850

Another advantage to ripping to MKV vs .m2ts (native BD format) is that MKV retains the chapter skip points.

I've run into a problem lately, seems to be about a month I've been seeing this. I did not go look at my Plex client update history, but I've been seeing this on the last two versions of PMS - currently on Version 1.16.2.1297.

When I open Plex on my Shields, the home menu is blank. No data on "On Deck", "Recently Added", etc. If I go into any of my sections such as TV Shows, Movies, etc., the data is there. To fix it, I have to switch users, then switch back, then everything is there. Anyone else seeing this?

Looks like this is addressed in the latest release:
(Metadata) Posters could fail to load on Nvidia Shield servers (#10036)
Version 1.16.3.1402

Installing now.
